Score: Tanya Andersen 1 | RIAA 0
"RIAA nemesis Tanya Andersen has achieved another milestone victory. She fought Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony BMG’s RIAA to a standstill, forcing it to drop its spurious file sharing case against her, and now an Oregon court has awarded her close to $108,000 in fees and costs. The amount, the highest ever, also signals what is in effect a default victory for other lawyers representing RIAA victims. It means they now know they’ll be able to proceed with counterclaims bolstered by the knowledge they’ll be paid their work. “This will assist in levelling the playing field in other cases,” Andersen’s lawyer, Lory Lybeck, told p2pnet. It’s also only the second time these kinds of fees and costs, which count for up to July 1 last year, have been awarded, he says. But Andersen’s fight to prove even a single mother on a medical disability pension can take on a multi-billion-dollar Big 4 labels and win, isn’t over yet." ~p2pnet.net
$1-Billion for Online Child Pr0n Fight
"A U.S. Senate panel has unanimously approved a bill that would encourage federal, state, and local police to use and create special software designed to nab child pornography swappers on peer-to-peer file-sharing networks. The Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday voted to send an amended version of the Combating Child Exploitation Act, chiefly sponsored by Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.), to the full slate of politicians for a vote." ~news.com
Survey Shows Teens Dig The PS3
A recent survey by Habbo of youth aged 11 to 18 recently revealed, among other statistics, that the PlayStation 3 is the “console of choice” for teenagers. The report surveyed 58,368 teenagers between the ages of 11 and 18 questions about the consoles available today. When it comes to consoles which teens referred to as either “great” or “good,” the PS3 ranked at 69 percent followed by the Wii at 64 percent and the Xbox 360 at 58 percent." ~next-gen.biz

Gates demonstrates touch UIs everywhere
"Little thin, tablet-like computers" and giant, sensitive walls with interchangeable touch- and pen-based "natural interfaces" are still on the way, said Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, speaking at a CEO Forum Wednesday. Microsoft's prototype Touch Wall includes special software plus "some scanning cameras down here at the bottom, so whenever I go up to it and say just touch it, the software will notice that, theoretically," as described by Microsoft's ex-CEO and soon-to-be-retired chairman to an assembly of CEOs at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington.

"So, in fact, this piece of software has all sorts of information behind it. And typically when we think about information now it's very linear. A PowerPoint presentation is slide-by-slide, and if something happens during the presentation, you want to skip around, that's hard to do," Gates illustrated. "Here we've got things laid out in this nice two-dimensional form. So, I can zoom in on anything, I can move around. I've got different types of information that I'm using here. And it's all just easy to navigate to, because at any time I can look at different things," he elaborated." ~betanews.com
Where Have All The Blu-rays Gone?
"Overseas, we have seen a lot of Blu-ray talk of late. Former HD-DVD heavyweights Universal Pictures and Paramount Pictures have now aligned (or re-aligned, as the case may be) with the Blu-ray Disc Association and have committed to releasing Blu-ray products in the very near future. In Australia, Universal remain quiet on Blu-ray support, albeit with the promise it is coming, and Paramount have just announced four titles for release on the 31st of July. But apart from that, the release schedule is still looking rather gaunt.

So why is this? Despite the colossal amount of PlayStation 3 units that have Trojan horsed themselves into Australian homes, Blu-ray disc sales are generally low. Of course, it’s a catch 22. They are struggling to sell because of general lack of content, and distributors (especially locally) are generally wary of releasing because they aren’t selling a fraction of the numbers their DVD counterparts are." ~tweaktown.com
Asus C90S Laptop Barebones review
"Unlike conventional laptop computers, the C90S is an upgradeable laptop, meaning that the user is free to replace many of its core components including the processor and the graphics card. Possibly even more interesting than this is Asus' choice of platform, not quite the standard for a mobile system.

The Asus C90S is powered by Core 2 desktop processors rather than the 'Merom' mobile variety. That includes support for the 800MHz FSB Allendale models, as well as the 1066MHz FSB Conroe processors. It is possible, then, to configure the C90S with a Core 2 Extreme X6800 processor operating at 2.93GHz if you'd choose to do so, which certainly makes the C90S a very unique laptop, or should we say mobile desktop replacement." ~techspot.com

Adobe Unveils Flash Player 10, 3-D Features
"Adobe unveiled the latest version of its Flash Player browser plug-in Thursday, pushing a series of new graphical features such as 3-D animated effects with a beta version of Flash Player 10 in an effort to stay ahead of increasing competition.

The new Flash Player, which has no set final release date, has several new features Adobe hopes will help maintain the plug-in's dominance -- its penetration is more than 98% -- among an ever-expanding group of competitive rich Internet application platforms and development methodologies, including Microsoft Silverlight, Ajax, and Sun's forthcoming JavaFX." ~informationweek.com
NASA moves computers from swarming ants
nasa.png"red_ants.pngA flood of voracious ants is heading straight for Houston, taking out computers, radios and even vehicles in their path. Even the Johnson Space Center has called in extermination experts to keep the pests out of their sensitive and critical systems. The ants have been causing all kinds of trouble in five Texas counties in and around the Gulf Coast. Because of their sheer numbers, the ants are short circuiting computers in homes and offices, and knocking systems offline in major businesses. When IT personnel pry the affected computers open, they find the machines loaded with thousands of ant bodies." ~computerworld.com
Thermaltake: PW 850i Internal Liquid Cooling
"The internal DIY liquid cooling system has always been the top choice of gamers worldwide. To fulfill the heavy demands of these players, Thermaltake is launching a brand new series of DIY liquid cooling systems, the ProWater Series, and the first model to be introduced is the new “PW850i” that incorporates the latest production techniques and technology of the internal liquid cooling segment.

The P500 Pump used in the PW850i has a maximum high output of 500L per hour to support the liquid cooling system even under heavy load; the hard-wearing ceramic bearing further increases the life span of the pump, users will not need to worry about pump failure even with extended VGA or memory liquid cooling components. The professionally designed inlet and outlet will eliminate the possibility of air blockages. The PW850i also adopts an automotive style radiator with Thermaltake exclusive "Dimple Dimpled Tubes" DDT technology rather than traditional round tubes, and with the adjustable 120mm fan (1300~2400 RPM); CPU heat will be transmitted efficiently in the coordinated system environment." ~thermaltakeusa.com
Nexus HOC-9000 Real Silent CPU Cooler

Lian-Li PC V1010 Case Review
"I liken Lian-Li to the Mercedes-Benz of the chassis design world. The Taiwan-based company designs its chassis with sleek, conservative style and hand-builds cases out of lightweight, yet durable aluminum. The chassis are generally not flashy, but are very, very conducive for high-performance cooling while overclocking. Lian-Li recently renewed its V series line-up with five new cases: PC-V2110, PC-V2010, PC-V1110, PC-V1000Z, and the focus of this review, the PC-V1010. ThinkComputers goes inside the Lian-Li PC-V1010 chassis in this review." ~thinkcomputers.org
Samsung ML-1630
"The ML-1630 monochrome laser printer is another solid offering by Samsung. It was also never set out to be an all-in-one office work horse. Instead, the ML-1630 printer might be found in a much more domestic environment, such as the home." ~overclockersonline.net
Quad Core CPU scaling vs Gaming Article
"Guru3D takes 10 modern dual & quad core processors and then fires off a dozen of games at them in combo with a high-end graphics card. Then they observe the raw differences in performance with the more modern games. They show & scale 8 AMD & Intel Quad-core processors and 2 dual-core processors in gaming resolutions from 1024x760 up-to 2560x1600." ~guru3d.com
DDR3 Memory: Technology Explained
"These are uncertain financial times we live in today, and the rise and fall of our economy has had direct affect on consumer spending. It has already been one full year now that DDR3 has been patiently waiting for the enthusiast community to give it proper consideration, yet it's success is still undermined by misconceptions and high price. Benchmark Reviews has been testing DDR3 more actively than anyone, which is why over fifteen different kits fill our System Memory section of reviews. Sadly, it might take an article like this to open the eyes of my fellow hardware enthusiast and overclocker, because it seems like DDR3 is the technology nobody wants bad enough to learn about. Pity, because overclocking is what it's all about." ~benchmarkreviews.com
Overclockers, Big Contest Coming Soon!
tomshardware.png"You’ve read about our adventures in overclocking. Now it’s your turn. Toward the end of June, in Los Angeles, the editors of Tom’s Hardware USA will gather together with top overclocking enthusiasts from around the USA to see who can get the most speed out of a set of computing components without frying too many of them. Yes, liquid nitrogen cooling is not only allowed, it’s encouraged in our overclocking contest." ~tomshardware.com
Companies Adopt "Just Say No" On Vista
"GM becomes the latest big business customer to consider rejecting Vista Microsoft, typically known for a self-confident business approach has been sending clearly mixed signals on the health of Windows Vista that are perhaps indicative of the problems the OS is experiencing. The situation, rather uncharacteristic for Microsoft, which has had a long string of successes, is best summed up in the words of its own executives." ~dailytech.com
ASUS P5Q3 Deluxe: An Early Preview of P45
"As one of the motherboard industry's most experienced advocates of new technology, ASUS wasted no time in preparing what may be their premier Intel P45-based offering, the P5Q3 Deluxe, for near global distribution. With the long-awaited first-round availability of motherboards based on Intel's newest high-performance X48 Express chipset barely behind us, some buyers are finding themselves at yet another crossroad. This time attention is focused squarely on P45, Intel's first ever consumer chipset built using 65nm process technology. Today, choosing the right platform can be a lot like trying to take aim at a field of continually moving targets: just when you think you've figured out what's right for your next build the market shifts and something new appears on the not-too-distant horizon. As before, this has a lot of users asking if now is the right time to pick up that board they've been eyeing or if they would be better off waiting just a little while longer for the next big thing to come down the pipe." ~anandtech.com
FBI warns of pirated Cisco hardware
"The FBI has revealed details of an investigation into pirated Cisco hardware bought by the US government. Operation Cisco Raider was launched after government departments complained that they had been sold networking hardware that, while branded Cisco, was built by third parties. The investigation found that over 3,500 pirated items had been sold to the government at a value of $3.5m." ~vnunet.com
New Tests Show Rootkits Still Evade AV
"Rootkits are still a security scanner’s worst nightmare: New rootkit detection tests recently conducted by AV-Test.org found that security suites and online Web scanners detected overall only a little more than half of rootkits." ~darkreading.com
OCZ EliteXStream 1000W Power Supply
"The OCZ EliteXStream 1000W Power Supply distinguishes itself from the many others on the market because it's compact, offers lots of watts and has a single high power +12V rail (80A). A single +12V rail tends to be preferred, especially in a multiple video card setup because all the power is available on a high powered rail and not spread over multiple rails. It's also efficient, has quality power and comes with a quiet 120mm fan. This will be a very sought-after power supply. Watch the video to find out more." ~3dGameMan.com
Sigma Unicorn Gaming Chassis Review
"A computer case is probably the most personalized part of the computer building process, while the case only plays a small part in the computer's performance, it plays a much larger role in its personality. Today, we look at the Sigma Unicorn, which looks to deliver on the promise of personality by adding some interesting features we don't see too often in cases these days." ~cluboc.net
OCZ Do-It-Yourself Gaming Notebook
"For years consumers have wanted to build their own mobile computing platforms, but the product offerings and market simply did not serve them as they did in the desktop do it yourself segment,” said Eugene Chang, Product Manager for OCZ System Solutions. “With the OCZ Do-It-Yourself Notebook initiative, OCZ empowers with the resources like validated component guides, documentation, tech support, and a warranty to allow consumers to configure and build a true gaming notebook with the exact specification that matches their unique requirements." ~ocztechnology.com
Ubuntu Hardware Compatibility List
"One of the most outright frustrating experiences using a Linux distribution is having hardware that absolutely, positively will not work with it for whatever reason. But what if you’re building a box? Is there any way to find out what hardware will work best?" ~pcmech.com
