"Elite Bastards: All right, so what kind of a process lead into you starting a business of benchmarking in the first place?
Futuremark: Back in 1997 there were no real 3D benchmarks that had great visual quality. I think there were some 3D benchmarks but they weren’t really what I would call “user friendly”. The benchmarks of that era didn’t have great visuals, they weren’t easy to use and they lacked the score which I think is one of the most important things: "One score to rule them all". I think that there was a need for a benchmark that actually was easy to use, visually appealing, free to download etc. People wanted to experience the graphics in real-time and to be able to get a picture of what the hardware was able to render. That was a great motivator for Futuremark to start developing 3DMark; to create a benchmark that’s not only giving reliable results, but is also good looking. That has been a driving force ever since. Of course it’s getting more difficult every year because we have to top ourselves and what other ISV’s are producing. We always want to go to 11 – one lo
uder. We have always had our goals very high all the way from 3DMark99, and well, the next 3DMark will again be a jaw-dropper." ~elitebastards.com/
