Conclusion:

iStarUSA has taken a tried and true server case design and really put some thought into it. The D-300L-M6 has all the features we here at 3GM need as for a server. Improvements over standard 3U design include dual “two to three” hot swappable SATA bays and modular internal fans. This is truly holds fast to the theory that a server needs to be redundant. The option for various colors for doors make a wonderful choice for server rooms that would like to easily differentiate between servers by color, instead of looking for small labels on the face of the machines. This can also become a very useful tool for any business that has their servers in a window display.

The iStarUSA D-300L-M6 does have some rather odd build choices though. The lack of an included IS-F08 (PCB Monitoring Board) does make the front LED cluster rather useless. I would have also really like to have seen the “two to three” bays to include some kind of ventilation at the front of the bays themselves to allow for better cooling. The fact that iStarUSA included a fan in every location available in the D-300 case, except for the second 60mm exhaust, kind of left me feeling like I was taken a fan. This would have been an assumed include in my opinion; along with the IS-F08… The removable motherboard try really got me excited and then dropped me like a bad date. I would really like to see iStarUSA update this enclosure with a fully removable tray while components, at the very least the motherboard, are installed.

Over all the iStarUSA D-300L-M6 is truly a great case and the only reason a kickass rating was withheld was not due to the case itself, but rather for the price of the case and the choices of the iStarUSA team to not include assumed parts. We want to extend our thanks to iStarUSA for providing the D-300L-M6 for review and their support of 3dGameMan.com!
