Page 16 of 16 Surge Protection/ Uninterrupted Power Supply: Last but not least, is a Surge Protector or Uninterrupted Power Supply. Everyone needs to protect their hardware from power issues like: spikes, surges, sags, noise, blackouts, and brownouts. By getting a quality surge protector or Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) your system is protected. If you just want the standard protection, go with a brand name surge power bar. Get one that has a Surge energy rating of 2000 or better. If you want surge protection and battery backup in an extended power outage, then go with an Uninterrupted Power Supply. The rule of thumb with a Uninterrupted Power Supply is, the higher the wattage the longer it will last in a power failure. One important thing to remember though is that a UPS one large battery and that battery will only last so long before it needs to be recharged. Please not that a UPS is not a generator. Generators are typically fuel driven and will power devices for hours or days. Standard UPS backup times will vary from 10 minutes to over 60 minutes. This of course depends on the amount of computer wattage needed and the model of UPS. For example, a 2000VA or 1200 watt UPS would last much longer than a 1000VA or 600 watt UPS.
