A Closer Look 2/2:

Directly at the back of the green PCI-X slot, you will find JP1; the Clear CMOS jumper which includes a convenient extended jumper for easy removal and placement (always nice to see this included). The next picture shows an example of two of the seven fan headers included on this motherboard! That’s right…. SEVEN fan headers! Three of the fan headers are speed controllable and all headers feature speed monitoring.



The motherboard comes with a standard server configuration for power; a 24-pin main power molex with the 8-pin additional power for the CPUs. Each CPU comes with four DIMM slots for themselves. These can handle up to 2gig DIMMs a piece with a system total of 16gigs of RAM possible. From the factory each CPU socket on the K8SE comes with a safety sticker and the retention brackets not installed. Many 1U and 2U builders with use special low profile heat sinks that require the removal of the standard retention bracket thus why waste time installing them, right? Our test system will be utilizing these brackets so we installed them.




With the retention brackets now installed, you can see that there is very little room between the teeth of the brackets and the surrounding components. Make sure to double check your processor’s cooling solution clearance so that you do not run into any mounting problems. Also note that the processor sockets are fairly close to one another and larger 120mm coolers may not fit when both sockets are being used at the same time.
