I just bought Fallout 3: GOTY edition recently at retail (non-Steam) and I am having frequent stability issues with this game. Sometimes when I am playing for a few minutes the game will start to lock up and then freeze to a point where I can't even go back to my desktop and have to do a manual reboot. Also, if I want to Alt-Tab or something for a long period of time and then go back to the game, it will just crash and I have to end the application. Are there any fixes or tweaks that I can try? I have the game fully updated using the GFWL client that it requires. I also have everything else on my system updated including drivers, firmware, BIOS, etc.
Specs: i7 920
6GB DDR3
GTX 295
850W PSU
I manually updated to the latest patch which brings the game up to version 1.7.0.3. I had assumed GFWL would take care of the patching but I guess not. My crashing/freezing issues in-game seem to have disappeared but I still need a fix that will let me Alt-Tab back and forth into the game. Opening up the command console and then Alt-Tabbing seems to work for a short period but not a long term fix. I will try playing in windowed mode to see if the issue is still there. Any suggestions?
I found a solution on the Steam forums.
Quote:Open up the fallout.ini file in: My Documents\My Games\Fallout3
Find the line:
bUseThreadedAI=0
change it to:
bUseThreadedAI=1
Add another line after it and insert:
iNumHWThreads=2
This will limit the game to 2 cores and prevent the engine bug from causing the game to freeze.
*If the game still crashes write this iNumHWThreads=1
EnJoY!!!
