Multi-Channel Memory

What are the differences or advantages/disadvantages to having multiple channel memory? Is it better to have 2 dual channel kits or 1 quad channel kit? Or a 4 single channel memory sticks vs 1 quad channel kit? Etc.

Multi-channel memory will overall give better performance. So for example DDR3 Tri-Channel memory will outperform DDR3 Dual-Channel memory.
