Hey i would like to know....
if i'm using EVGA 780i motherboard , and i know its an old board that i bought like 2 years ago lol and it doesnt support SATA 3 or USB 3.0
but lets say if i buy a USB 3.0 external hard drive and plug it into my board with an adapter, does the speed get capped at USB 2.0??? or will it not work at all???
same to SATA3 drives plugged into my SATA2 ports... does it not work at all or does it just cap the speed at SATA2 speed????????
thanks
it will work, usb 3.0 ports are 2.0 compatible.
same story with sata3 drives, it will work, although capped at the port's sata2 speed.
oooo thanks!
Yea, it's limited to the connection. So a SATA III HDD on a SATA II controller would max out at SATA II speeds and the same would apply to a USB 3 device connected into a USB 2 port. But when you upgrade you'll be glad you have the faster devices ;)
