I am going to be going out & taking some photos around my city, if Rodneys bandwith will permit, I would hope everyone else could so the same.

So to start, this is the city where I work. I work about 6 blocks from the beach & may see it about 1 a month.

I love Chicago too... It's such a cool city... Just the feeling, and the way it looks, and the way it makes you feel... I've never been to NY or anywhere like that, so I don't have a frame of reference... But if I could live in any big city, it would be Chicago...

This is a structure commonly known as "The Calatrava", after the Spanish achitect who created it. It is a showpiece for the Milwaukee Art Museum, and is intended to be a landmark by which to recognize Milwaukee (kind of in the same way that the CN Tower identifies Toronto, or the Opera House identifies Sydney Harbor). The cool thing about the structure is that the "wings" can open and close with the wind, despite the fact that they are made from steel pipes.

Of course, if Milwaukee really wanted to have an identifying landmark, they should have stuck a Harley on top of a giant Miller Beer can, but I guess that would not have been quite so elegant.

Here is a picture of Starved Rock in Starved Rock State Park here in Illinois. Beautiful park near Wazman and I. Loads of trails and many waterfalls to see. A real gem here in the midst of our cornfields!

History-This area has been home to humans from as early as 8000 B.C. Hopewellian, Woodland and Mississippian Native American cultures thrived here. The most recent and probably the most numerous group of Native Americans to live here was the Illiniwek, from the 1500s to the 1700s. Approximately 5,000 to 7,000 Kaskaskias, a subtribe of the Illiniwek, had a village extending along the bank of the Illinois River across from the current park.

In 1673, French explorers Louis Jolliet and Father Jacques Marquette passed through here on their way up the Illinois from the Mississippi. Known as “Pere,” the French word for “Father,” Marquette returned two years later to found the Mission of the Immaculate Conception-Illinois’ first Christian mission-at the Kaskaskia Indian village.

When the French claimed the region (and, indeed, the entire Mississippi Valley), they built Fort St. Louis atop Starved Rock in the winter of 1682-83 because of its commanding strategic position above the last rapids on the Illinois River. Pressured from small war parties of Iroquois in the French and Indian wars, the French abandoned the fort by the early 1700s and retreated to what is now Peoria, where they established Fort Pimitoui. Fort St. Louis became a haven for traders and trappers, but by 1720 all remains of the fort had disappeared.

Starved Rock State Park derives its name from a Native American legend of injustice and retribution. In the 1760s, Pontiac, chief of the Ottawa tribe upriver from here, was slain by an Illiniwek while attending a tribal council in southern Illinois. According to the legend, during one of the battles that subsequently occurred to avenge his killing, a band of Illiniwek, under attack by a band of Potawatomi (allies of the Ottawa), sought refuge atop a 125-foot sandstone butte. The Ottawa and Potawatomi surrounded the bluff and held their ground until the hapless Illiniwek died of starvation- giving rise to the name “Starved Rock.”

The Illinois State Parks Commission was initially headquartered in Starved Rock State Park after the park was purchased in 1911.

Thanks for the background info. It's rather coincidental that only this evening, my Wife was wondering about the origin of the name "Pere Marquette". We were going to a concert downtown, and the Mapquest shows a Pere Marquette Park right next to the concert location.

You would be in heaven Vector Man here in August. In a town north west of here is a Del Monte plant. And as a "Thank You" to the community the company sponsors "Sweet Corn Festival" days. And on the Saturday they boil up TONS and TONS of sweet corn in huge vats and serve it warm and fresh with TONS of butter. FREE of course!!!! And all you can eat!!! :banana

Nothing like walking around chomping on sweet corn looking at crafts and the flea markets...:beer
