Vivid imaginaions,maybe?
Sorta like when you hear a DJ on the radio, and then meet them in person without seeing a picture of them.
You imagine what face fits the voice. Make any kind of assuption, and it just might be wrong :).

A lot of assumptions is actually based on the first impression the person has others. As I remember reading it in my psychology book, if we don't assume things using schematas, we would go crazy.
For example, let's not talk about ppl for now. We all use schemas inside of us. As in a set images of things, like, if you have been to 1 restaurants, other restaurants will have similar routine unless proven otherwise. You enter, wait to be seated, order drinks, order food, eat, then pay your bill. So you apply the same rules to all the other restaurants, even restaurants you haven't been to until you find a restaurant that follows a different routine/procedure. If we don't do this, we'll be going crazy as we will be nervous walking into restaurants not knowing what to expect.
Anyway, now back to ppl, as we grow up, we meet a lot different ppl. We'll have one general schema into what to do and how to react when meeting someone new, like saying, "Hi", "What sup", etc etc. We will also have other smaller schemas for different group of people, as in, computer geeks will behave a certain way, business men will hehave in others, where jerks will possess certain behaviours.
Our first impressions of ppl usually lead us to group people into these small schemas. And whenever they are grouped into these schemas. The people grouped into the schema will have us assume these people will behave the same way as the schema describes it.
For example, if my first impression grouped this new guy I've met into the jerk schema. I will automatically assume he will exert the same behaviours as the jerks that I have encounter before.
To sum it up, pretty much assumption just makes life easier on us.

Very-very-very true Orangepeel, I used to listen to this female DJ
on the radio when I lived up North and she sounded oohh soooooo
sexxxxy on the air. I then had a chance to meet her and man what
a big difference it was to see her in person. I hate to say any thing
bad about anyone but the poor girl was waaaayyy buuutttt ugly and
waaaayyy over weight, but her wonderful personality really made her
a beautiful person in real life.
