View Full Version : Time to replace the wheels...

I got my pay increase and have to work more this year. I'm trying to focus more on my I.T. certs than posting here as they will help me move on to more $$ (hopefully). Work has gotten a bit crazy as I've been moved to two different campuses and have to adjust to the new equipment and personnel.

But, it also means it's time for new wheels. I love my old 86 'burb but she is old. No a/c means that getting in her and driving around feels like your riding in a pre-heated oven....and I mean that literally (temps in excess of 100F and heat indexes in excess of 120F). Gas is a real bear (10 mpg) and is adding up to be half a car payment in gas every month. The upside is I haven't met many vehicles that want to muck w/ me on the freeway. hehe. :devil She ain't pretty but she runs like a bat out of hell.

Currently, this is what I'm looking at (I want the vehicle I choose to be white in color and pic's are linked):

Toyota Tundra
<img src=http://www.toyota.com/images/shop/vehicles/gallery/tundra/exterior/photo_5.jpg> (http://www.toyota.com/html/shop/vehicles/tundra/)

Chevy Silverado 1500

<img src=http://www.chevrolet.com/silverado/images/gallery/gallery_major06.jpg> (http://www.chevrolet.com/silverado/index.html)

Nissan Frontier

<img src=http://www.nissanusa.com/m/cma/i/3fr/3frontier_gal_med03.jpg> (http://www.nissanusa.com/vehicles/ModelHomePage/0,,20463,00.html)

There are some others in the running but I don't have time to post them now. I'm looking at a few SUV's; however, the prices are a bit too steep for what I can afford. I'm also not looking at 4WD due to gas milage considerations and the fact that I will (most likely) never use it. I am looking at the V8's in the Tundra and the Chevy as the gas milage isn't all that bad on the newer, smaller V8's and the resale value on the truck is increased w/ a V8 (at least here in Texas it is). The Nissan truck isn't as comfortable as I would like it, but the price is right. I won't be making a final decision for a couple of months so everything is still up in the air.

Please read: I value anyones opinion; however, please do NOT come into this thread and tell me how much you hate trucks, SUV's, or how they guzzle gas and that I'm just a notch above satan for liking trucks. If you do NOT have anything pertinant to add to this thread, go start your own "I hate trucks" thread.

The SIlverado looks nice... Big and tough... (Pure American, in my mind :Blah)

I can tell you from experience with all 3 vehicles that any of them would be a good investment of your money (though, with all due respect, go used...even if only a couple months used, because that initial hit you take when you buy one brand new makes them a worse investment than computer parts). Also, avoid white...on any of those trucks, jet black would look absolutely slick. :Holy Crap

Maniacmous is right - try to get a used one if you can. Perhaps a program truck or dealer truck - something that was only used to drive people back and forth when their cars were in the shop. Also, try to stick with one that's a year old or so - by then the most costly depreciation has already happened.

I wish I could afford a kickass truck - maybe if I ever get anywhere that pays well... But trucks are great... No comment on the Ford vs. Chevy debate from me - I like either one... Plus Dodge. I like theirs too.

Those are very cool trucks, though. If you're ever in the central Illinois area (and God help you if you are - there's nothing here), I call shotgun! :)

As long as you don't go with a ford exploder nobody gets hurt :Yea right

I like the 2nd and 3rd selections. having my own experiences with Nissan's and knowing they're a sturdy vehicle, i'd go contestant #3

I'll kill two birds w/ one stone and cover both your and Waz's responses.

Used vehicle financing right now grabs a much higher intrest rate. A used truck, here in Texas, typically has six digit milage or you're going to pay a pretty penny for it. Also, I would not get the benefits of lower intrest rate and the better warranty. Unless I get a Ford and...ummm...hell, no.

Jet black does look slick...until you realize that here the nice, hot sun:

A) heats it up nice and hot...real fast. The a/c has a harder time keeping up.

B) the black paint fades out faster in the sun. This means you get to repaint it more often.

White stays cooler once it's cooled down and doesn't seem to fade out in the sunlight. Unfortunately, white is a practical decision and not the one I would necessarily make if I lived somewhere else.

I was driving around w/ a friend to work and their temp sensor in their Toyota 4Runner was reading 101F. Heat index had to be around 110+F. I need the a/c to work well and work fast. :Nice

My mom used to have a Frontier. Silent_Death911 is right, the interior was hella cheap. I had a tough time gettin' her in and outta 4wd in the snow too. It was a V6 and didn't have any balls (I apologize to any women who take offense). A few weeks ago she upgraded to the Tundra 4x4 Access Cab Limited 4.7L V8. Sh!t God Damn it's a beast! (I apologize again) She got it in the Phantom Gray Pearl like the picture. That thing is fast, smooth, quiet, gorgeous, has a good factory sound system, a/c kicks on in seconds... and so much more. My parents needed a bigger, badder truck to pull their new enclosed trailer and their Harleys around the country. You won't go wrong w/ the Tundra.

Nissan is a excellent brand. Must be to create the Skyline :Wink

I know all about the heat on a dark car (currently drive a dark brown car w/dark brown interior...and no a/c), and you're right, the heat is an absolute bear in that case. Though, if you are really concerned about it, you could also go w/silver which is the color of my neighbor's Tundra, and I assure you it looks slick and should give you all the benefits of the white vehicle. :Holy Crap

Having said that, I'd vote for the Tundra. The two Toyotas I've had were excellent! Very reliable! And above average build quality. The Chevy quality is nowhere near as good.

You can always get whatever you buy repainted in a nice pearl white after the warranty runs out. :devil

Repainting to a new color isn't always a good thing, it frequently drops the value of the vehicle for some reason. :Holy Crap

Anywho the Toyota is not bad either.

Oh that pic of the 1500 above is of the Silverado SS sport truck. I sa one at my local dealer and looked at it. $40,000. Has a 6.0L, 20" Rims and loaded, nice truck, and has Corvette engine parts to boot.

I just this weekend bought me a car as well. A 2000 Camaro Z28. I'll start a new thread on that tomorrow with some pics.

Personally I'll like to see this SUV craze come to an end. Either you need a truck, car or van. Dont mix em together, IMO.

But this is America so, to each their own. Ok so I dont like em. My mom drives a S10 Blazer and its not bad actually. As big as they need to be is a Suburban/ Tahoe/ Explorer. But what irates me is these big ones like the Excursion and Escalades and Naviator. Who the hell would need one of those big gas guzzlin vehicles. If you need the pasenger room for god sakes get a Dodge Caravan. Its cheaper on gas and the sticker price....:smash

On side note GM has a new mid size line coming out this fall. A mid size S10 like truck and it will have a 5 cyclinder engine. Plus some more of those hybrid SUV/car/truck/van things i dispise.:devil

Not that I'm gettin on anyone here, those are just my opinions, feel free to ignore me.:thumb

Sorry but I have to disagree with you Scottman and say
anything but silver or light grey because those colors
fade out real bad in the bright sun light. When I lived in
Florida all of the silver-grey colored vehicles there would
all faded out within a year or two even here in Tenn. the
same colored vehicles fade out fast enough. With Artcwolf
living in Texas and all the bright sun they have there his
new vehicle would be faded out in no time with those colors.
I would say the white would help a lot with the heat and
wouldn't fade as fast but it is Artcwolf's choice as to what
color he wants when he gets it.

I agree. I hate all this plastic stuff on cars now. I see the point in it 'absords' some of the impact but damn when I can take my foot a do a couple thousand dollars damage to a car something is dead wrong.

A friend of mine has an old 72 Chevy pickup and was going to work early one morning and a deer jumped out in front of him and he hit it before he could even apply the brakes going bout 50mph.
Damage to truck: none..

It gets 24-29 mpg and is pretty zippy (although it doesn't even touch the power of the V8 :Sigh ) even w/ the 2.0L 4 cylinder.

I agree...will have to wait until time of purchase and see how it will fit into my life. Unfortunately, I won't be using the bed much so that is a lot of wasted space. I'd really love to have the Tahoe but cost makes it out of the question.

The Chevy truck was the most comfortable vehicle I've sat in, in a long, long time. Not to mention the power of that nice V8 sitting under the hood.:devil

Well, that takes the Rav4 out of the running...don't want to look like efers twin...

:p

I really liked it...the Rav4 will probably end up being the vehicle I get. I still want to test drive the Saturn Vue (personally, I've never liked Saturn and have not found one yet that is comfortable to me), the Honda CRV, and some Nissans.

I'll probably get a new vehicle in Oct or Nov. :luxhello

Something to remember is that we are coming up on the end of a model year. All the 2003 models are going to go on sale shortly so they can get rid of them.

I'm keeping that in mind. Intrest rates are going up and so is gas prices...again.

Hopefully, October....

I just read where memory prices are bumping up again for the end of summer. The RAV4 is nice. You won't go wrong there. Only thing is no low range. But that may not matter in Texas. I don't think Eferz could tell you how it goes in the snow...

Well, I've made my final decision...just have to get the money together now. I was dead set on the Toyota Rav4; however, I test drove another vehicle yesterday and it really blows the Rav4 out of the water.

Meet the Honda Element (http://www.hondacars.com/models/model_overview.asp?ModelName=Element). There are some excellet pics here (http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=4&article_id=2507).

It has received some very high reviews and after the test drive, I was sold. It seems more responsive, quicker, and more fun to drive than the Rav4. It also seems more comfortable. Sorry Toyota...hello, Element. :Wink

No offense Arty, but those are THE ugliest vehicles I have ever seen in my life. Granted its new, has warrenty and better thatn what ya got right now, but those are flat out ugly IMHO.

But then again what do I know. I'm just like chevys and anything with RWD and V8's. :D

If you get one, hope you enjoy it. :thumb

Out of the choices you gave I would definatly go with the chevy. However I think you should look at a Dodge ram with the Hemi. In my opinion it is by far the best looking truck out there and good quality also.

Hehe...when I first saw it, I would have agreed with you. It's grown on me.

It's like if a Hummer and a Mini Cooper mated and this is the love child.

No carpet inside makes it easy to clean, great gas milage, extremely comfortable, and good cargo capacity make it very appealing. And that's just the start of the features.

I like the Chevy's w/ the V8's but, for one, too expensive, and second, bad gas milage.

Dodge has, hands down, the best looking trucks; however, their quality has left something to be desired. Most of the reviews on their long term reliability leaves something to be desired.

For everyone, one of the more important requirements became, gas milage.

It wasn't in the beginning of my search; however, the longer that I looked and considered my driving distance, I realized this was going to make a huge difference in my pocketbook.

Full size p/u's look great and I love the good old fashioned power of that sweet V8 but the gas milage just flat sucks.

The engine in that Honda is the same as the Accord - and is probably the smoothest 4-cylinder in production today (at least the 2.3 liter in my 2002 Accord is). They redline at just over 6100 rpm, and make the sweetest, smoothest sounds at high revs. Hard to beat a Honda engine. I would say Arty, accidents not withstanding - that you have secured transportation for at least the next 10 years..

Yeah, it's a nice 2.4L @ 160bhp. Transmission is sweet, too. I couldn't feel it shift. I'm tempted to get the standard...but I know I'll regret it down the road.

OOh - not sure I like the Honda :(

We hired a RAV4 in New Zealand - drove entirely around the South Island in 5 days:banana :banana

We hit a flooded patch of road doing about 70Kph (my mate was not paying attention) and the car just shot through - the mud just went straight up over the windscreen.. We were lucky that we just floored it - the road was blocked for two days and we were the last car through!

We took it up as far at the Glacial Moraine on Fox glacier - it loved the unsealed roads.

We were mighty sad to hand it back - and it was Electric Blue

The Rav4 is at 160 bhp, also. The Element is just a better thought out vehicle, though. If I can't get the Element (highly doubtful) the Rav4 is my next choice. The Element costs a bit less than the Rav4, is more comfortable, and has more features. It also seems more responsive on the road than the Rav4.

I've seen these on the road. There is an Element that parks in the Pay and Park not too far a walk from our house.

I'll admit it...I did a walkaround on the car one day, and got up the nerve to peek in the windows on a following day :D.

One of the nice features it has is the floor panel, in the back (that covers the spare tire), has four legs that can be attached to make it a table for that quick tailgate party. :KICKASS
