Wish I had a free box lying around to try it on... I did a few years back, but I didn't know nearly enough about computers to make it work... Now I'm ready for the challenge... But I live in the middle of nowhere, so there's next to nowhere around here that knows anything about it.

I think the biggest Plus that Linux can offer, aside from it being completely free ;)

is the fact that it's alot harder to "fake" at being an admin.
most of the people that run windows based servers use wizards.. and spend alot of money for support that they should beable to figure out them selves.

so really it's a win-win server side app, you save money on the software itself and it saves money due to incompitence.

it's safe to say now that I'm using redhat with apache... Google is my new best friend :heartbeat

well that and webmin :P

It is a Free and Open Source Live Linux Bootable CD. Its pretty sweet, especially if you just want to dabble in Linux, and not want to have to alter your partitions to do so. Since Knoppix is a GNU/Linux distribution that boots runs completely from cd, its not necessary to install anything onto the hard disk. Due to on-the-fly decompression, the CD can have up to 2 GB of executable software installed on it. In fact, it includes recent linux software and desktop environments, with programs such as OpenOffice.org, Abiword, The Gimp, Konqueror, Mozilla, and hundreds more quality open source programs.

Hmmm... That is cool... I'm gonna have to play around with that at home... Eventually if I get good at it I'd want a separate system to run Linux on (or a separate partition - can you dual-boot Windows XP Pro and Linux?) but just to practice on, this would be cool...

I should take one of these machine carcasses we've got lying around up here at the store and use it as a test box - we've got plenty of old PII and PIIIs with motherboards, and old memory and stuff... Just old tech. It would be useful to learn on something I don't even know works and we wouldn't be selling - that way if it breaks there's no loss...

Not exactly the right answer, but it explains a lot of things... :)

Yep - the Earth was created by the people of the legendary planet Magrathea for some transdimensional beings (who in this dimension look like white mice) at the suggestion of the second-greatest computer in the universe - Deep Thought.

It was created to find the question to which Deep Thought discovered the answer 42 - and would take 7 and a half million years to complete the calculations. Sadly, 15 minutes before it was completed, the Earth was destroyed by the Vogons to make way for a hyperspace bypass...

OK, am I the ubergeek or what? :)

"There is a trick, or rather a knack to flying - and it involves throwing yourself against the ground and missing."

That's my favorite quote from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

My friend found the whole series online here (http://k76.ryd.student.liu.se/~lindahl/other/guide/index.html) but it doesn't seem to be there anymore...:Crying

Yeah, Hitchhikers was a great trilogy (in five parts)...one of the few books that reading it has actually caused me to laugh out loud.

Oh, and, remember that only the answer (42) could exist because if both the question and the answer exist in the same universe, then that universe ceases to exist.

If you use MSPaint, converting BMP to JPG, u lose a lot of quality. Have you got any other photo editor program?

There's also (I'm sure) programs out there that save the position of your icons through resolution changes - I remember my Matrox Millenium drivers even had that option. You might want to look around for something like that...

Nowadays, with people having so much system memory, and cache memory, and video memory, probably not a heck of a lot.

I mean, wallpaper doesn't even take up that much any more. Now fonts - that's a different story. But I can't believe having a few extra icons is going to throw an "Out of Memory" error nowadays...

No that and Bob was also the name of that horrid piece of crap Microsoft released...and to think they had the nerve to call it "Software"!

From the looks of it, they tried to make the Computer exactly like a PDA... except not portable.

Alot of these things bring Windows XP to mind.

Such as the Dog in the find files and folders, the stupid baloons are the same colour and shape, for the day it took monstrous amount of resources to use it, the office assistants in Office are almost the same as the assistants in Bob.

Well, a deal is something you can't resist at all. But since you have the slightest doubt, then the "deal" probably as sweet as it seems it is. So I say wait till you get a real "deal" with a AIW9800 or something faster. :Nice

i'm thinking i will grab the AIW9700PRO for my P4, then run my ti4400 in my AXP, then i'll buy a new HT/PC case (the cooler master that looks like stereo equipment) and buy a micro ATX KM400 chipset from Epox that runs a 166mhz FSB, use my old XP1600+ runs runs 1833mhz on stock voltage, and buy a 120 or 160gig hdd for my HT/PC. instead of upgrading my P4 to the QDR800/P4 2.4GHz system. i think that running at 2.8ghz on a QDR700 fsb will have to tied me over till next spring. i've always got my AXP (xp1700+ oc'd to xp3500+ freqs) which runs equally with a P4 3.2GHz system that i can use as my main system till next spring's upgrades.

i dunno tho, i'm still trying to formulate all these options into something tangible. i'm pretty confused on wut i should do. one day i've decided, the next i've changed my mind, lol. yes, i'm goofy like that. lmao

Funny your should say that...

Wazman worked on a computer at his store last week and someone had it on their's. So I tried it out...the purple ape got to me so I put him on "Hide". That voice got to me...I need to delete him...

I had it on mine too - for about 15 minutes...

It was fun at first, making him say all those dirty words. Then I just wanted to put a gun to his head and pull the trigger...

I can't imagine what possesses some people to download and install that stuff...

Yep - that's Hannibal... The oldest of our five cats... We call him Bubbalicious or Mr. Bubble sometimes (well, my mom does, really), and one day he was next to the box of Mr. Bubble, and we snapped the pic. He's been my desktop ever since... :)

You are in some serious need of some organization. Is there even wallpaper behind all the icons? How can you see it if there is? :smash :p

Mine changes fairly regularly. It consists of some of the photographs that I have found around the web that I think are the most inspirational, for color, composition, technique, etc. All were taken by amateur photographers and all are much better than I might have taken. But hopefully, by constantly looking at and studying them, I may get better...

But I use my computer that much lol. That is normal for me. I could probably do with sorting things out a little bit though.

Edit: that pic was a few days old. I've updated it.

I use mine that much...esp. the ones at work. None have a mess on the desktop like that. I would not be able to find anything.

It's whatever floats your boat. I just cannot stand having icons all over the desktop. Just a pet peeve of mine. You don't know how many end users I've gone to work on their computer and could not find My Computer, My Network Places, or any other icons that should be easy to find due to the desktop being riddled with icons.

Sometimes I'll ask them if that is how they keep their house....

I usually get hit about that time. :smash

Do you keep your PC on all the time - those Icons will make it really slow on boot:eek:

I keep all my shortcuts in a folder on the desktop

wazman

It's funny - I always used to have a bunch of icons on my desktop in all the other OSes I've used - Windows 98 to 2000. But once I hit XP, I couldn't stand the icons on desktop any more. Now I try to get rid of as many as possible. I just find it doesn't look right or something. Weird, huh? I just have the recycle bin on my XP desktop.

I think in W2K you can't move the IE Icon. I have My computer, My Network Places, My Docs and two other folders - Shortcuts and Downloads
