Seems there are a great group of minds that frequent the site. And while it only would take one or two people to mess up a good chat room, maybe between good moderators and/or good users... we could keep the porn bots out, and the good conversation in.
I personally think it would be VERY cool to actually chat with efer, TGM, das, and some of the other kind and helpful folks I've been sharing posts with the last couple days.
Dunno how Rodney feels about this, if there was one and it's gone for a reason, or whatever. Hopefully I'm not bringing up a bad idea. :(
But here's hoping a 3D Game Man chat might actually be one of my GOOD ideas!!! :jawsdown

I think we were talking about an IRC room or something at one point. Rod's feeling was that we could go ahead and do whatever we wanted on that as long as we knew it wasn't officially supported by him or this site. I don't know if anything ever happened with it though - let me see...
Ah... Here's (http://3dgameman.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6367&highlight=irc+room) a thread from a long time ago that pretty much sums things up. It's been brought up once or twice since then, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen...

what, isn't the forums a good enough chat room for you? :D

The forums are great, but not exactly "instant" chat. I know of several sites that have a java based chat link on them. You just click the link and open a java page where anyone online can chat.
That's kinda what I had in mind, though I completely understand if Rodney wasn't interested enough to do it, etc. Just seems a shame not to "REALLY" chat with some of the smart and interesting people on the forums. :)
Theres always Yahoo and M$N.
In the profile for each user is a space for the respective 'handles'.
Not everyone filled in their's tho.
You could always use that.

True. But I wouldn't want to just start adding people to my IM, and saying "Hi, how ya doing???" Most wouldn't realize right off I was from 3GM's forums, and they'd probably ignore me for the rest of time. ;)
Whereas since most people here spend a LOT of time here... I figured sometimes folks might just jump into a "chat" room and see who's on, what's the latest with o/c'ing, etc.
I'd love a chance to actually say Hi to Rodney and Sherry "in person", so to speak. :D

All good points, but if people didn't want contacting out of the blue, then they wouldn't have put their handles on a public profile would they? :)
Just a thought.

Maybe. Or they put them there so that people they already know could refer there in a bind. Someone just jumps into my IM and I don't know who they are, I'm bound to be a little skitish.

Untill they tell you where they are from. (E.g. 3GM)
Then its a case of: "O right, ok, cool. So wha' cha' upto then m8y?" :D

Yep, this topic has come up before.
Certainly seems like a great idea, but here are a few reasons off the top of my head why it isn’t:
1. There are a few aholes out there that would just come in for bashing/swearing. Believe me I know because I've tried this idea in the past and had to cancel it very quickly. It’s unfortunately we all can’t get along, but you know how that goes…
2. It takes away from the forum. What I mean by that is, this forum is a resource, instant chat really isn't.
3. There would be no way for me/my mods to personally monitor it (I have too much on my plate as it is) and therefore no way to keep it clean or all ages like my forum is currently. We pride ourselves on keeping this forum on the up and up ;)
There are more reasons but needless to say I currently have no interest in perusing this idea anymore.
PS. If it’s any consolation chatting to me is nothing special, although I can’t speak for Sherry ;)

A disadvantage with computer chat rooms for me is once i start talking about some interesting hardware or computer topic i can't get out of the chat room easily. Its like i keep on going and going and going and ...

Well, I wouldn't presume to do anything Rodney doesn't want done... so as far as I'm concerned the chat idea is out.
I'll make do adding a person to my personal chat here or there as it works out. Have added one extremely cool person that way already. :D

Yep, You can make a few Things and stuff, But nothing official really, But I think Rodneys point that it would take away from the forums might hold some water, but the forums are there still, and That's where I'd post my big questions, stuff where I want a lot of opinions, other stuff, Like the Off topic forum and everything where the chatting goes down probably would decrease in use, but you'd probably be able to get faster quick questions answered, just my opinions...

Does 3dgameman have an IRC channel? I think it should, it also needs a section for watercooling.

Check to make sure your port is set correctly, and then check that you don't have a proxy/vhost/host.

No, there isn't an official one. Rodney isn't interested in one and he doesn't want it to take away from the forums. There's been a couple of threads about it in the past.
So if you want to start one up, go right ahead... But it won't be sponsored by Rod or anything...

Anyway, I merged this thread with one of the few visibile threads and I leave you with this quote.
