Anybody here like chocolate as much as I do?
Study: Dark Chocolate May Have Benefit
By LINDSEY TANNER, AP Medical Writer
CHICAGO - A small study suggests that eating dark chocolate can lower your blood pressure a delicious instance in which something that tastes good might, for a change, be good for you, too.
The short study would need to be confirmed in larger, longer-term ones before doctors could recommend treatment with chocolate, researchers say.
Yet if the results can be confirmed, "you can sin with perhaps a little less bad feeling," said Dr. Franz Messerli, a hypertension expert at Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans.
The German study appears in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association.
Thirteen adults with untreated mild hypertension got to eat 3-ounce chocolate bars every day for two weeks. Half of the patients got white chocolate, half got dark chocolate.
Dark chocolate contains plant substances called polyphenols _ ingredients scientists think are responsible for the heart-healthy attributes of red wine. Polyphenols also have been shown to lower blood pressure in animals.
Blood pressure remained pretty much unchanged in the group that ate white chocolate, which does not contain polyphenols. But after two weeks, systolic blood pressure _ the top number _ had dropped an average of five points in the dark-chocolate group. The lower, or diastolic, reading fell an average of almost two points.
The participants had an average blood pressure reading of about 153 over 84.
While their blood pressure did not fall enough to be considered in the desirable range _ below 120 over 80 _ the results show dark chocolate "might serve as a promising approach to reduce systolic blood pressure," said lead author Dr. Dirk Taubert of the University of Cologne.
Taubert said participants ate the chocolate bars instead of the sweets they usually consumed, and thus did not gain weight during the study.
The study received no industry funding _ the researchers bought the chocolate themselves from the supermarket.

Mmmm Reese's Peanut Butter Cups :p!
I have tried making them from melted chocolate and smooth Kraft peanut butter. They came out great, and didn't last very long at work :D.
Just get some cupcake papers, melt some chocolate and pour a little into the cup n' swirl it about a bit. Cool the cups in the fridge, fill with peanut butter and then top with more melted chocolate :).
Yup, it's a lot of work, but you can pick the chocolate you want, and either crunchy or smooth peanut butter :spin!

Ed had a Reese's peanut butter cup the size of a 9" pie made for me when I came home from deployment. the thing must have weighed 10 pounds because it was about 3" thick. We served it for dessert at my welcome home dinner. It was fantastic.

I don't care much for godiva. For the calorie intake of 2 pieces of that I can have way more hersheys. It's good and all... but it is too derned expensive like you say.

Oh... not to upset anyone, but chocolate comes from the cacao bean which comes from the cacao plant which grows in rain forests. If there are no rainforests then there is no real chocolate. Here is another reason why to preserve the rain forests. Somebody setup a petition.

There is no such thing as an unnatural sugar. There is refined and unrefined. Both are natural products derived from plants. (sugar beets, corn, sugar cane, tree sap ect.) As far as depression so little is know about depression and it's may manifestations the usual course of treatment by smart doctors is whatever works for the individual. Caffine has actually shown some promise in the treatment of depression.
Of course Caffine and to a lessor extent sugar can be addictive.

whats better for energy?
a chocolate bar
or an apple
it would be an apple
also because when your system goes into a depression it effects your digestion system even the people that eat lost and thats why they get fat
so if you eat an apple which is easier on your digestion system it helps you out better
Belive it or not the candy bar is the fastest route for energy. Being diabetic if you take insulin you have to carry a candy bar or sugar cubes with you because in case of low blood sugar that is the fastest way to put sugar into the blood. The apple has to be processed. The energy to process the apple and the time it takes detracts from the energy boost.

Actually from working with several people that were on the advisory group that reported to me, I have to say your hand out is based on older research and that a lot of what they say is no longer excepted by the phsycological profession. Depression is caused by chemical imbalances in the brain that are triggered by a multitude of causes. Diet is just one and a minor one at that. as I said before they are just now begining to understand the causes. A different study showed that when a person was enjoying what he ate he was less depressed.
I have a cousin that was suffering from depression after a divorce. She tried drugs and diet with no results. I finally got her to see one of the doctors that had been in the advisory group and within 6 months of proper analysis she was much better. Seems that the underlying cause was somethings that happened in her childhood that she had suppressed.

I'm 5'11" and I weigh 181 pounds.
I bike alot. Usually on camping trips we do 34 miles in about 3 hours.
I have muscle and not much fat at all. I did this calc of how much water is in my body and it was over 16 gallons or something. Alot of people say that I have a big bum... but that is okay becuase it don't jiggle.
yes... a candy bar will give you quick energy, but it won't last very long. Water has negative calories becuase you spend calories keeping yourself warm when the cold water enters your body and water didn't have any calories to begin with.
Soda has sodium and sodium makes you retain water. Bad thing.
Eat a normal amount of calories per day. Too little and your body thinks you are starving and therefore goes into a mode to preserve what you have.
Always exercise... before a meal. It will help you burn off calories because your metabolic rate is up.

I start out in the morning wiyh 15 minutes of stretching and follow that with 30 minutes on the Total Gym. I then do 250 push-ups, 500 sit-ups and 200 crunches. I then go for my run or bike ride. The run is usually 20 miles at a pace of 10 miles/hour though I'm a little slower than that now because it was hard to run on the ship. Treadmills don't count.:) if I bike I try to do atleast 25 miles in the morning at maximum output. Takes a little over an hour.
In the evenings I workout for about two hours with a couple of martial arts instructors here on base. It's a great workout and I get to teach martial arts which is my love. After that I'll cool down with a 5 mile jog or 30 minute bike ride.

Actually they have linked that one we start breeding, we start to die or something like that.
Like they took flies and stopped them from breeding. They have lived 3.5 times longer than if they did breed.
They are trying to do a study type thing to see if it works with other things. If it does.... they were saying that it could eventually over many many many generations lead to us living even longer.
Also, you stop aging after a certain point in your life.
Also... it has been proven sex once or twice a week in your life can boost your immune system and you won't get sick as often. Any more than 2x a week and it does not effect your immune system in any way... it was like you never had "Fun" at all.

Yeah...after looking at that workout regimen....I think I'm gonna have to start lifting again, kick my run up to at least 15 miles, and up the rest of my workout, the situps and whatnot.
As far as martial arts go..they are intriguing, yes, but the best I can manage in that department at the moment is some basics I was taught, and basically improving my speed/endurance, and of course throwing knifes, sword handling, staff, etc.

Brandi has the quickest reflexes I've ever seen. I'm sure you have seen the try to grab the dime out of the open hand of someone before they close their hand trick. I watched her one night with a couple of SEALS. They thought they were fast. She not only took the dime out of their hands 10 out of 10 times but on the last few trys left two nickels as change without them realizing until they opened their hand. That was funny as hell and those guys took a hell of a ribbing from their buddies until one of the team commanders introduced her to them. She has since did some martial arts training for the teams at Little Creek.

Both of my parents are thin by nature, so it's probably in the genes.
That, and I have always had more trouble putting on weight than losing it. It's downright scary if I get sick, beacuse the weight falls off really quick. Picked up a nasty stomach flu one year and lost about six pounds in three days.
I excercise a little, but more of a weekend warrior. Rod and I have been doing long bike rides lately, and it feels really good :).
I bought Pilates tapes and yoga mats, but after a day at the hospital and making rounds with my drug carts, then doing everything else, it's a chore to fit it in maybe once a week, but I like what it does for my tummy and posture :).

Sherry, your baking skills are awesome. If I was Rodney, I would be the size of a house:)

Sounds like you would be a fine officer with the proper discipline. Most good officers bend the rules, the great ones break them and support their actions with facts and logic. To be an officer would be simply awesome...and yes, I believe in bending and even breaking the rules when sufficient evidence is there that something will work. My problem though is...I'm still somewhat drawn to battle itself..there is something inherently honorable about true combat...and to be a high officer, someone on the sidelines, I'd go nuts...I think I'm more the type to be in the thick of it battling out than on the outside watching the show.

That would be the problem. The idea is to win without a battle. Trouble is the other side wants to do the same thing. So you plan the battle to accomplish the mission with the least amount of casualties and collateral damage.
What the He** does this have to do with chocolate:)

Yes, I know the idea is the least amount of casualties...makes me wish there was a way I could just go solo...military funded, yet given missions to complete any way and place I so choose..that way, if it would hit the fan, only my butt is in the fire, I always go out of my way to keep everyone out of trouble, one of many faults.
Edit: As for chocolate...I really have no idea how this relates...I think we just hijacked the thread.... :Holy Crap

http://www.deboerfood.com/culidor/Cream%20Puffs/CrPuff_MilkChoc_C10301_%202sm.jpg
Cream Puffs
Ingredients:
Filling:
3 1/4 oz Instant Vanilla Pudding Pack
2/3 cup Heavy Cream
2/3 cup Milk
1 tsp Almond Extract
Puff Pastries:
1/2 cup Flour
1/2 stick Butter
1/2 cup Water
2 Eggs, at room temperature
(or at least not right from fridge)
--------------------------------------------------------
To make Pastry (about 10 minutes):
- Preheat oven to 375.
- Put water and butter in pot and bring to a light boil, melting butter.
- Add the flour all at once.
- Stir with wooden spoon until dough forms a ball.
- Let stand 5 minutes or so to cool.
- Add both eggs, and stir with wooden spoon until incorporated.
* This takes a while.*
- Drop 3/4" blobs onto cookie sheet.
- Bake at 375 for 30 minutes.
To make the Filling (about 5 minutes):
- Whip cream (or use prewhipped cream).
- Add milk to pudding mix, stirring with rubber spatula until smooth.
- Fold in whipped cream.
- Stir in almond extract.
- Refrigerate the filling.
To complete puffs:
- Let the puffs cool.
- Cut tops off puffs, scoop out inside if you want (not necessary).
- Scoop some filling into the puff and put top back on.
- Eat!
The puffs don't keep well in the fridge or in humid weather, so it is
best to fill the puffs just before eating.

We are playing a game of treasure hunt now. I have hidden away four cartons of Reese's Original Peanut Butter Cups aboard ship. She has found one carton and the last I heard she had enlisted the help of some of the crew to find the other three. So if she treats this like a bomb search she should have results later today. :lmao
Ain't I a stinker.:KICK ASS

That's as bad as my situation - allergic to chocolate and lactose intolerant.
I can't have any nice things.

Carob is a chocolate substitute; however, I've never really liked it's taste. It just does not quite taste right...but maybe it's just me.

Maybe I could dip some Jelly Belly jellybeans that I got for christmas in chocolate?
Nah, on second thought, the "hot buttered popcorn" flavoured ones might taste too weird with chocolate :lmao!

it's sort of like that Nutra-sweet to real sugar taste... you'll eventually get used to it.
Just for anyone/everyone to know if they care, there is this really good sugar substitute that is made from sugar.... but has no carbs.
It's called Splenda
www.splenda.com
my mum had diabetes because of her weight but it went away when she lost most of it. She used this instead of sugar.

It isn't half bad. Just had some the other day while over at a friends house.
I pretty much stick to Wal-Marts Clear American Key Lime flavored water. No calories, no bad stuff, and cheap. :KICK ASS

Tried out one of those orange kit-kat bars today.
Wasn't that impressed, actually.
Peanut butter or caramel will always be the perfect mates for chocolate, hands down!

Those Chocolate Oranges are good. I like the raspberry ones. too.
I had a Reese's White Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup today. It was just as good as the original, but just a hint sweeter it seemed. I give it: :thumb :thumb

Now THOSE are good, especially when you dip the segments into hot tea. Mmmm!
There's always something chocolately going thru the chemo clinic at work, especially the tins of Quality Street chocolates that always show up on time for after-Christmas snackings ;).

Stinker is not the word that I would use.:jawsdown we finally found all four of the cartons but I'll say this for you, you hid them well. We had to take the crew to alert status and practice finding explosive devices to find them.
Thanks though for the Reese's babe. I owe you one for this.:devil
