no, that's not it. it was a kind of new compression that allowed full movies to be streamed over a dial up connect crystal clear, as if it where on your hard drive, on your computer.

Product Designed to Bring Near-TV Experience to Narrowband Market Available for License December 15

New York, NY, November 30, 2000 -- On2.com Inc., (ASE: ONT), a leading broadband technology and services company specializing in providing television-quality streaming video over the Internet, today announced that it will be demonstrating On2 VPX, its new narrowband-focused compression technology, at the upcoming Streaming Media West conference in San Jose, CA, at On2's booth, #809. VPX is derived from On2's unique VP3 and TrueCast technologies, achieving breakthrough video quality over 56K modem access lines.

On2 VPX is designed to operate in a default window size over four times the screen area of today's typical narrowband streaming. The technology is designed to continuously stream at low data rates and not resort to the "slide show" characteristics or freezed frames that are frequently seen with other narrowband products. Using sophisticated multi-stream encoding and buffering techniques, On2 VPX ensures consistent frame rate and motion integrity even in difficult, congested network conditions.

The VPX technology will be made available for licensing.

"This new product line blurs the boundary between broadband and narrowband streaming," said Douglas A. McIntyre, On2's President and Chief Executive Officer. "In the past the results available on a dial up on 56k modem were markedly different from those experienced on a broadband connection. That is not true any longer."

"It is our intention to drive the quality improvement seen in VPX closer and closer to a television experience and we don't plan to rest until we get there," he continued. "This product, like television, handles degradation of signal over the Internet as TV does by optimizing the quality of the video instead of stopping it altogether or defaulting to a slideshow, two very un-TV like experiences."

"VPX offers the On2 quality advantage to the 90% of the streaming market that has no access to our technology today because they are on dial up connections," McIntyre added.

The VPX alpha will be available for viewing at On2.com, the company's web site, beginning December 18, and be demonstrated at On2's booth, #809, at the Streaming Media West show in San Jose, California, December 12 -- 14.
