Well, some of you have seen some of my complaints about my ADSL. Now I'm here to rant more about some interesting info I found out from a tech.
The tech came over to my house today between the window time. Great, fine and dandy. We conversed throughout what he was doing and found out this great stuff
1. I've been paying 55 a month for DSL from Bellsouth when they offer the speed on a best effort basis. Great! Oh... and their best effort guranteed service is 256Kbps up and 256Kbps down.
2. I asked him about the random loss of line noise for the signal. He had no idea what would be causing that. That is okay as he checked and it was a problem with their line
3. I found out that the cabling to our house was not meant for data transmissions due to the guage (sp). Wheee!
4. I found out that there was a FIBER TO CURB CONNECT RIGHT OUTSIDE OF OUR DEVELOPMENT THAT WAS NOT BEING USED and that BELLSOUTH IS TOO CHEAP TO CONNECT YOU. He told me that they are too cheap to come and connect us to the fiber. That is some customer service right there for ya. He said that if we were connected to that, all of the problems would be gone.
5. 2Wire home portals use alot of line noise and power in order to get a signal. Unfortunately, those are 2 things that we don't have alot of, so he offered a brand new free modem for us to use. We're gonna take him up on that offer. Now I need a switch and some Cat5E cabling and RJ45 connectors.
well... Since I found out about the Fibre thing, which got me pretty pissed at bellsouth, I'm going to be calling them every day till it is fixed. If it isn't within a month... I'm taking this higher and will not let it rest!
I am tired of this crap. Your thoughts?

Talk to someone on your state's Public Service Commision. This is the commision that oversees and regulates the phone company. Bellsouth will listen to them.

I'll have to do that. This service sucks. Unless you live in a new home with new wiring in a new development with a fibre to curb box withing 18000 feet of your house, most everyone will experience trouble. Not many people like Bellsouth.net ASDL

Don't feel bad. I have a friend who had the same problem, EXCEPT... The box was sitting in his front yard! :lmao

Is that the boxes next to the phone poles? I have two of those mofo's in my yard. My line runs to the one that is said to have been there since the late 60's. THe house line is run to the other box which is no where near that age.
If I remember my dad correctly there was fiber optic cabling run in the ground here. (Suprise its in a rural area..) But who knows. I'm well in the range for dsl of the nearest remote site just up the road. As soon as I get time, they will hear from me to get rid of this blasted noise that prevents me from hardly connecting with dialup. :banghead If its not fixed, I'm going to a higher person each time I call them.

Perhaps this would be a good approach to take with both your customer service problems:

hehehe... sounds like a good idea to me.
However, I'd like to be able to use my DSL afterward.
Hmmm.... I dunno. I'm going to get something done.
You've seen those fairly large Beige-ish boxes that have Southern Bell on them. Those are usually Fibre to Curb boxes. Some are and some aren't but I got one withing 1 mile from my house so I would be getting perfect signals and perfect clarity over the phone if we got switched.

Depends on if there is a DSLAM at the fiber terminal (SLICK).
Go here for an explanation of the acronym DSLAM. This link has multiple links to explain various terms.
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/D/DSLAM.html
A SLICK (pronounced as it appears "slick") is a Subscriber Loop Carrier (SLC). This is a multiplexer which allows a large number of analog lines to be provided over a very small number of digital lines. A good example is the AT&T SLC 5, which allows 192 subscriber loops to be provided through two or four digital lines. SLCs are also referred to as Digital Loop Carriers (DLCs).
The first SLC was installed in 1971. As of 2001, between 15 and 30% of all lines are served by SLCs, as are roughly 60% of all new lines built each year.
A SLC usually consists of two separate subsystems, the Central Office Terminal (COT) and the Remote Terminal (RT). The COT is connected to the RT via a DS1 circuit. The DS1 circuit may be carried over actual T1 lines, or it may be carried over another medium such as lightwave or digital radio. The RT is then connected to the subscribers using a Voice Frequency (VF) circuit. The VF circuit is what you and I would recognize as our normal phone line.
There is a DLC (Digital Loop Carrier) also. It functions the same but the subscriber lines remain in the digital domain.

Thanks for the info there. I knew about most of that, but it was informative none-the-less. the part that ticks me off is that other people are on there and it is not full. they just won't switch us over cause it costs money.
