Oh behold this topic people...

There is sooo many people who base their buying decision on the card the camera uses. I myself have not paid too much attention to it, but I know I love xD.

I will try to so some research about properties of each card because remember, size is not the only thing that matters.

Opinionize, commentize, despaminize!!! :devil

EDIT:
OK I messed up with my poll and I ended up having no poll. I will try and contact a mod to fix this but until now I hope this will do:

If you had the choice to use ANY flash memory card with your favorite camera, which would it be?

(1) Compact Flash
(2) Memory Stick (Sony)
(3) MultiMedia (MMC)
(4) Secure Digital
(5) Smart Media
(6) xD (Olympus)

My hope is that one day someone will combine all these cards into one (one card all features of all cards and fastest speed) with the size of an xD.

Compact Flash is the most prevalent and in the most different sizes and speeds. You pointed out the biggest problems with the Memory Stick and the xD chips. Nobody but one company uses either one. If you buy a camera that uses one of them, you can only upgrade to the same brand.

I don't think that that there ever will be a single standard for a memory card.

Compact flash is the most prevelant and probably the most robust industry standard on the market. Being used in PDA's, camera's, MP3 players, and other devices makes it extremely flexable.

I think the next, up and coming, memory card is the SD or Secure Digital/MMC card. Small, light, and robust, used in PDA's, MP3 players, and camera's makes it a great second choice. SD and MMC is interchangable.

I like the xD form facter; however, I think only Olympus is using it and it's not that much smaller than the SD/MMC card. Not a good thing.

Sony's memory stick suffers from almost the same problems as the xD card. Although, Sony does use it in there PDA's, you will have to own a Sony PDA to make use of that functionality. Sony is adding CF card usage back to their camera's with the soon to be released replacement for the 717. I think that shows that Sony is starting to see the light.

Smart Media, imho, isn't going to be around much longer. I don't care for it for a couple of reasons. One is that it's a bit more delicate than the other memory options and the second is that the memory controller isn't on the card. This leads so issues between memory and compatibility.

Compact Flash seems to be the most widespread form of memory... followed by SD... Therefore, I'd choose CF...

I can see why Smart Media is on the way out, it sucks. Because both my camera and mp3 that used them no longer works and I think it was because of the smart media card dying.

Now I have a Fuji camera and it uses xD, dang thats a small memory card, looks just a chip on a ram stick basicaly.
