I guess most people are mean in one sense or another, imtim. Can you narrow the question down a little bit? :)

There's evil in the heart of all men.

There are many reasons for so called "mean". Many people are cruel and bitter out of jealousy or envy of someone. There are always some people that are just completely cruel to everyone...those with something tweaked wrong in their heads...but the reasonings change by the person and situation. Could you give us a little background specifically on what we're discussing here?

Well this is a little too broad for any of us to really answer.

Go read Lord of the Flies by William Golding.

People are mean...

Some reasons are because it makes them feel superior (you know, the ones that need to feel superior) and to make someone feel lower than them.

I think people are mean by being nice, cuz they are nice just because they feel they have too. Stop being fakers. Speak what u feel.

To those homeless people out there, leave me the eff alone, I wanna go into the store or wherever & come out without tipping you stoopid ass for nothing.

I was driving downtown today and i saw a homeless man with a dog. How the hell can you not afford money for yourself, but for the dog? Give me a break.

Well, I didn't do TOO well in Psychology.

But basically, behaviours comes from Dispositional Factors and Situational Factores. As in their genetics built-in, and/or affected by the surrounding environment.

People are mean, either they naturally inherited the MEAN gene from parents, or the environment has caused him to be mean to others probably because it gives them reward, (ppl think he's cool) or negative reinforcement (self-defence), finally it could be BOTH. It might be partly inherited by genetics, but the character of the gene is brought out by the environment.
As in, some situation came up, triggered his mean gene in order to survive.

this probably doesn't make sense, but it's something like that.

It's just a natural consequence of self-preservation. You look out for #1 above all else. It can't be helped.

Altruism is a fallacy.

Altruism is a fallacy. I dunno, I have the propensity to help people out. Which is why I enjoy being a system adminstator, and moderating for these forums. Personally, I don't think human kind is mean at all. However, certain action can be interperated as being mean by the ignorant.
