Still haven't got all the bugs worked out of this thing yet, but we'll see. I'm going to try to run some benchmarks on it later today or tomorrow. Which ones would you suggest?

Well, for a system that old...run PCMark2002, maybe 3DMark2001, get SiSoft SANDRA, and of course, stability test it with MemTest86. Then....get folding buddy! :thumb

Your new rig has got enough umph to run WinXP. You thinking about upgrading?

From 233 to 766, I bet you'll notice a BIG speed improvement in
that move up in CPU speed.:thumb :thumb

Give it some time... Don't want to blow out that new system before he has a chance to enjoy it... :)

I think somebody gave him the new stuff... But I'm sure he's still got the old 233Mhz on standby.

I surf with my PII 333Mhz Laptop on 512 ADSL - makes no difference web surfing - it is the connection speed that matters

I usually enjoy using Windows 98 discs as coasters, among other things.

So yeah, you can. Just as long as you're not actually running it on a computer.

I remember going from my Intel Pentium II 400MHz with 100MHz FSB and 1meg L2 cache to a P4 2.4B. Huge improvement

12-09-2003, 07:53 PM
i went from a p1 133, to a 667 celeron, 1gig p3, 1.8 p4 willy, 1800+ athlon paly, 2000+ paly, 2400+ tbred, 2500+ bart

P75 to 600Mhz = 8X faster
that was my first big jump.... then i went to 1.6A running close to 2.4 but not quite.

I actually like my HD jump more, 1GB to 13GB to 260GB.:devil

I've upgraded piece by piece over time, so the only really big jumps I can remember are a) getting my first CD-ROM drive (no more floppies), and b) getting my Monster3D Voodoo 1 card. Quake never looked so good...

Otherwise I've been pretty smooth as far as speeds go...

It's kinda hard to upgrade piece by piece now a days..... with a new CPU, u probably need a new mobo and new RAM...... which isn't a cheap upgrade on its own.... ok...except maybe for video cards and other peripherals.

You just have to buy smart, that's all... Do your research, read up on stuff, and check out places like this... :)

I'm just saying in general, a combo upgrade would see more performance gain than just piece by piece.

It's all about the flow. :smokin

heehee yeah I remember back when I had a K62-300MHz then I
moved up to a whoping K63-450MHz then the next jump was up
to the ol' 1200MHz Tbird then up,and up,and so forth and the
rest is history:lmao

I've gone from a 8086 - 4.77 MHz to a 386 - 16 MHz. to a 486 - 50 MHz. to a K6 - 233 MHz. to a Athlon slot 'A' - 550 MHz. to a P4 - 3.0 GHz OCed to 3.15 GHz with an 840 MHz FSB. My FSB is faster than my last CPU.:jawsdown I have a database that a search used to take 10 minutes or more that is for all intents and purposes instantaneous now. What a difference 17 years makes.:lmao

God only knows what the next step will be.

I've gone from a 486 33Mhz to a 486DX 66Mhz, then to a celeron 333Mhz, then to this P3coppermine 1Ghz and soon going to a P4 2.6 HT.

Lol, remember way back when they had to turbo button that got you from 25Mhz to 33Mhz?

egarrard
12-10-2003, 11:17 AM
I actually don't notice that big a difference. It's a little faster ever now and then, but in normal stuff, it's the same. Mainly a reflection of the other sub-systems (connection, hard drive, etc.).

It's still not as stable as the 233. Have to boot it a couple of times to get it to go all the way in. Some software problem I haven't found yet.

Well, it is Windows 98 after all... You've got the horsepower to put Windows 2000 on there - or XP, as Artcwolf suggested. I found a lot of problems I had with 98 were solved instantly by going to either 2000 or XP...

However, I didn't do a fresh install. Well..I did with a smaller hard drive, just to see if the system would run. It worked fine.

If I remember to get some blank disks, I'll save all the stuff on the 20gig and reformat and install from scratch.

You can pick up WinXP Home over at Newegg.com (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=37-102-141&catalog=368&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=6) for around $90.00 w/ free shipping.

Pro is a little more at around $140.00

Yeah...XP isn't cheap...luckily when I went for college orientation this summer (before I built my new box), I found out they were selling XP Professional, with Office XP Pro, and Frontpage, all for $99 US to students....that helped quite a bit. :thumb

That's helluva upgrade...there seems to be a need...need for speed ;)

My History:

-PII 400Mhz Slot (I remember braggin')
-1.2 Ghz T-Bred (Stupid Refurb Compaqs)
-2000+ @ 2Ghz tops - SDRAM (no comment)
-2000+ @ 2.3 Ghz (2.5 tops) (I am still kissing the NF7-S)
-2500+ @ 2.3 Ghz (2.5 tops) (Cash cash cash $$$)

Funny thing...my new motherboard made a huge difference because I could overlock. Oh, and DDR...weeeeeeeee
