View Full Version : I'm really tired of the end user.

As I type this, I'm also looking at a computer that's been into the shop three times since the beginning of last week. Last Wednesday or so I ran Ad-Aware on it. Found over 300 pieces of spyware. Now it's back in today. Has 241 more pieces of spyware.

Yes, you read that right. In one week's time, these clods have managed to download almost as many pieces of spyware as I cleaned off one week ago. They also have the W32.Randex.Gen virus, which is an IRC virus. It was not there last week.

I'm really beginning to tire of end users. It's simple - don't go to questionable sites, don't open files or attachments if you don't know what they are or who they're from, don't download files just because you think "Gosh, I'm inbred and that looks cool", keep your virus definitions up to date, and just use basic common sense.

Thanks for listening to me vent. I know many of you understand exactly where I am right now.

That doesn't mean you can't be disgusted with the level of stupidity by some of the people that are keeping food on your table. Gratefull to their face, but laugh behind their backs.

He's just venting off...

I'd not complain about it. :Nope I'm sure we all get pissed at our jobs/college/school occasionally. Nothing we can do, but gettin it off your chest somewhere can help.

Oh...?

All the newbies I've encountered had heard about 'viruses' from the press etc and asked me about it. They didn't know what a virus was, or what it did, but they asked me about a 'scanner', also not knowing what it was.

But they knew to ask.

:luxhello Best be safe than sorry innit :)

lol I can see your point.

After a job like that, you must find 'normal' stupidity quite 'everyday'. :lmao

I simply wouldn't have the patience to do helpdesk.

Wow... You guys have been busy.

I'm OK... Just needed to vent it out... No biggie.

I think the next time they bring it in I'll just put Windows 95 on it.

Version A.

No updates.

That'll teach them. :devil

I will be the first to admit I don't know everything.

All I am trying to say is that people who just go about in life in a daze, and never stop to learn to use the tools that they use deserve to be laughed at at times. Myself included if I do something really dumb. I will learn from my mistakes, but I expect others to find humor in them.

I myself shrug most things off except for the exceptionally stupid. For example, I had a customer complaining that their Monitor wasnt working. Turns out the monitor was fine, the PC just needed to be turned on.

50 Canadian????!!! for 3 hrs???

Why are you selling yourself short
in 'professional circles' it's at least 50 AN HOUR even if they start the process and walk away

Sure, you don't have take em to the cleaners
I aim for about 40 an hour, with a 2 hr minimum
All the jobs I've taken on (on the side) is at least 100 for 2 hrs (whether it's cleaning a virus or something a bit meatier), I quote them my price but thet were expecting to pay at least 150... the extra 20 is a tip

If they deal with me professionally... it's not as a computer technician, it's SCADA Technologist rate $90 and up (that's travel time too... its not like I'm getting dumber behind a wheel)

There is a really simple way to remove this end user stupidity. Its really really simple. Get a mac, I did it with both of my parents. I don't have to worry about viruss, spyware and other stuff like that. Simple AV + Mac is pretty much free. And they are easy to use, but expensive :(

When I do broadcast consulting work its $200 USD/hour with an eight hour minimum plus travel time and expenses while in the field. Anything over 12 hours/day doubles the rate.

My dad knows a consultant who won't leave his office for less than $600 a day - and that's if he's at the location for 1 hour, or 8.

I'm definitely not doing something right...

I usually fix stuff for free or Beer.

A friend of mine runs his business from his Machine. I rebuilt it for him last year and told him he had about 6 months left in it (It was really old and tweaked it as much as possible). Then he brought it in with a major error. The sound card was clashing with some other IRQ.

The fix? Pull it out and plug it back in again.

I could have charged him and he would have paid but I did it for free. I went round ther on sat for a BBQ and as we were leaving he gave me a crate of Nastro Azzuri - this is imported so would hav ecost him more than I would have charged - good result!

I like to work on a barter system - I get paid enough at6 work. This guy is an electrician - by the time we get a house I will have ebough credit for him to have a look.

I'm also building a new PC for my Sensei at Iaido. I wil do that for free as well as I am honoured to be learnign form him

Actually, it wasn't really porn. It was Weatherbug, and Clockworks, and some other really weird stuff... I don't know where these people find this goofy stuff...

Anyway, we'll end up reformatting their hard drive for them... I just get frustrated because some people just never seem to learn.

I understand where Wazman is coming from. I spent 4 years in Customer Service for an office supply company. These people worked for Fortune 500 companies. And I wondered who some of these ladies got their jobs. Goes for men too.

I had stupid questions like, "How many are in a dozen?" or "Do those warehouse gloves come in 2 lefts or 2 rights? It states $4.90 a pair." Or "You say next day delivery...will that come tomorrow?" The list goes on and on.

Patience is a virtue when working with the public. When I worked at Wal-Mart the Service Desk lady came in the back break room, sat down and lit a cigarette and said, "I just had a guy come in just now and wanted to return the Equate Lice Remover shampoo kit stating it didn't work on him. I could not take my eyes of his hair. I had seen it all now."

But in Wazman's case he does let people know how to remove stuff, yet they still don't do it and complain to the high heavens when it doesn't work they way they want it.

Everyone has a right to vent. In customer service we all did at break and lunches. Yes, we did get paid for taking the abuse...but even with that you need a place to let it all out.

hehehehe I see nothing wrong in venting a little in here because if you don't
then it just keeps building up in you until you really go off on the end user
and that's not a nice thing to do. I just don't let it get to me all that much I
just laugh it off and go about my business I have one customer that is like
that one wazman is talking about. I have to do something to his computer on
a weekly bases one thing or another *virus, spyware, conflicts,* you name it.
I have installed ad-aware, virus scanner, and still he manages to get viruses
on it somehow.:Yea right I always just smile and fix it for him no use in going off on
him just wouldn't do any good he will never learn :banghead I usually just tell him
see ya next week same time I really believe he could destory an iron anvil
with a rubber hammer :lmao :rofl2 the people that buy computers from me
I never charge them any labor even after the warranty has run out on it
just whatever the parts cost+a little markup and even if I work on one that
wasn't bought from me I charge them very little labor if any at all. I guess it
just depends on what all I have to do to it if I charge them anything for fixing it.:thumb

Wazman, I was thinking about this and I have a few ideas for you.

1) Charge more money, its not worth going over this stress for very little reward.
2) Make a class (of course it will cost some more $$$ b/c it takes your time) on how to prevent virii, spyware, and hackers. It will not only be a service, but it will help solve your problem.

Thats all...I guess a few is 3, so I have a couple of ideas LOL

If it's any consolation Waz...I get about $13.50/hour at work and on my occasional side jobs I charge $30/hour.

I get the same thing from the faculty that I work with...

yeah same happened to me, built my first customers pc, spent about 3 hours installing software on it, then as soon as i got home about 20 mins later, i get a call saying they have a virus
:banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead
So i go up there and sure enough its the MSBlast (i think) spend another 3 Hours installing software again, installing an AV this time too.

By this time it was about 11PM, so i got my money and got the heck outta there.

But thats not all, then she needed help again the next day, she wanted to install a Sims Add on pack, but she hadnt bothered to buy the orignal sims :banghead :banghead :banghead
Then she wanted M$ Office installed, i do that and get payed £10, got about £40 over all, after that incedent i started charging by the hour, and added in travel costs

Never had any blocking problems. Anyway, I am talking about dial-up people. I would activate it on a cable/ADSL user, but strongly suggest getting another firewall, and/or download a free one (with better security then the windows one) onto the system. Depends on what the client wan'ts, but the system itself has to be considered too.
