It is bad here in Oz. Usually I change jobs every year but it is still unstable at the moment. Roll on Longhorn for another round of Rollouts!

THe thing that annoys me is that IT Recruiters and IT Project Mangers (what part of IT do they actually do?) get paid more than techs

I keep meaning to get my MCSA but I fall asleep reading MCP books! I am at a bit of a crossrads career wise here. The market in Sydney (and I imagine Melbourne) is much smaller than London so their are less jobs. Also IMHO there is more demarcation of roles here. I have always done Admin/Server with the company having a separate Helpdesk. Here you ten to get helpdesk/Desktop and Network Admin on its own. Then it is very hard to break into a Network team as they can be cliquey.

I jacked in a good admin Job to come to Oz (A goodmove nonetheless!):D

I am looking to move across to a more specialised role but am not sure what yet - there is a vast array of choices

I haven't actually spoken with Efer in a while, but the in the most recent of his posts, his sig has stated "last seen trying to do the work of three network admins", or something to that effect. He works for Oracle, so I am sure they can keep him busy.

I am looking to move across to a more specialised role but am not sure what yet - there is a vast array of choices The software side of the business is pretty much going the same way. I have been doing analysis/development with Oracle tools for the past 8 years now. The market is requiring a lot more cross-training to keep a job now than ever before. I believe that here in the USA, that is partly true due to the way that the whole market recovery thing has happened. The industry is bouncing back from the downturn of a few years ago, but employers are still not hiring. They are expecting more from existing employees.

I am beginning to believe that is how it is across the nation.

I've about given up on finding a jr. n.a. job...the logical next step in my career. I'm thinking that going back to college, slowly finishing up my batchlors degree and moving on to another career might be a wise idea.

I just love working IT/IS and keep hoping for a turnaround.

Yup - I am really glad to be here but it is depressing when I talk to my mate who dos my old job - he does Desktop + Network and has just gone on a 2 week Citrix course Plus generous on call allowance:Sigh

As for cross trainig - i have no issues with that but when was the last time you saw a cross trained Project Manager or recruitment consultant?
:lmao

Roll on Longhorn!

Citrix rocks...unfortunately...well, I shan't go into it here. Suffice it to say, no one in our district is properly trained in Citrix, therefore it does not work, therefore, the head honcho's think it sucks and was a huge waste of money.

Yet, they have no money to pay the techs more or promote us.

I do desktop support. I run between two campuses and fix broken workstations. Well, let me rephrase that, I chase some infected boxes down due to the incompetence of end lusers, I reboot workstations, and surf the forums.

I look after the desktop side of a Citrix WAN spread between here, Indianapolis and Madrid. I do all the config, I am spitting bullets at the moment as there was a support role for it involvong training and they gave it to a "Mate " of the manager even though I have been supporting it:bomb :bomb Citrix is the Bomb!

My job is good but I have been here 18 months and can do everything standing on my head. At the moment I support 150 people on two sites plus 25 mobile reps - just been talking a guy through fixing his Lotus Notes whilst typing this :D The Network team is short staffed at them moment but even though I can do the work they will not let me help as it would involve replacing me here which they don't want to do.

Sucketh!

I too surf all day!

Only in Aussie Dollars!

I get exactly half what my colleague gets - such is the dowturn:eek: If I ask for a payrise my manager trots out the old" There are plenty of other Engineers out there!":banghead

It is still good pay - just not what people think when you say contractor - they expect you to be on twice as much as them. In reality it is the same with no Holiday or sick pay or security. I am just in need of some more stimulation at the moment!
