Awesome and great!
Lady C admitted she never even saw this type of reaction in Detroit a few years back...
But then again... she mentioned how Americans rally behind the flag... Canadians rally behind hockey
Detroit might be Hockeytown( I might've reminded her that a couple Canadians(Howe and Delvecchio made it so, but didn't)
...and why not rally behind our 2nd National sport... the country's leadership wasn't anything to be proud of since the mid 50's, the only chance we mighht've had would have been the PC's(but they were voted out of office too early back in the late 70's
.... but I digress :)
Way to go Flames
This is why Canada's team is where they are... no blowing money on superstars... just have a good leader(Iggy... but Conroy is the Real McCoy), a good and lucky goalie(Kipper)and about 18 other guys that will believe in themselves
Dare we dream that the upstarts will topple all opposition?
I say YES

Trivia time.
What was the city where the expansion team named the Flames started and what date was that NHL franchise awarded?
Bonus questions.
Who was the Flames' first coach and who were the first and second round draft choices? Who was the first amateur draft choice?
When did the Flames play thier first exhibition game, against which team and what was the score?

I know it was in Atlanta but I dont know the exact date..
Also I want to offer a big congrats to all the Flames fans and let everyone know after Tampa finishes off the Flyers that Im on the other side of the fence for this one. Being a Floridian I am rooting for the Tampa Bay Lightning...if they win that is.
If Philadelphia wins then Im still on Calgarys bandwagon in the west.

Atlanta
Awarded Nov. 9,1971
Boom Boom Geoffrion was hired as Coach on May 22, 1972
Phil Myre and Dan Bouchard, Goal tenders both, were the first 2 drafts
Jacques Richard was the first Amateur Draft
Their first exhibition game was against the Islanders, the Flames won 4-1
The name Flames... and I'm winging it here, was a tribute to Gone with the Wind, when Atlanta burned(did Atlanta burn in the Civil War?)
Anyway...
Calgary was awarded the franchise May 21, 1980, keeping the Flames name, take a drive throughtout Alberta, and you find out why(flare stacks, flare stacks, flare stacks)
First regular season game was against the Nordique tied 5-5, with Guy Choinard getting the first marker
First home for the Calgary Flames was the Stampede Corral (seating 7000+), moved to the Saddledome on 1984 (seating 19000+... but they took a couple 1000 seats out of 'dry dock' this year, now seating over 20000)

The office here is deserted
... impossible to get anything constructive done
People are talking about the Code that Don Cherry was mentioning... what goes around comes around... Koryluk was the show-boater from Game 3, shooting the puck into the empty net
He was also the one to put the puck into his own net last night :rofl2

LOL When me and my cousin where watching him roof the puck the first thing I said was if I were the Flames I would beat him down and lo and behold. Ofcourse Rathje had to take the brunt of it...but oh well.
In the end it came back to bite him.

Heard a couple people talking about the Korolyuk goal, it's been suggested that the person who actually touched it last was Kipper
That's right, a goalie might've have scored a goal in the playoffs!!!:luxhello :luxhello :luxhello

Thats already been done directly by 2 goalies in the playoffs.
Martin Brodeur scored a goal in a playoffs series against the Canadiens I believe and Ron Hextall scored one in the playoffs as well. It wasnt his first goal either...he scored one 2 years before that in the regular season.
Bobenis
05-20-2004, 05:22 PM
I think Patrick Roy either on Colarado or the Canadiens scored one in the playoffs before as well, did he not?

It's news enough that a goalie scored a goal... indirectly even
Bobensis... you might want to change that Avatar by the way... PET screwed more than just a few technology grads in the 80's out of jobs thanks to his NEP ... oh yeah share the wealth... but if the bottom drops out of the oil money... Alberta is on it's own
Sorry to slam you on that
I was one of those grads, not only did he screw Alberta, he did a major damage to Canada's military...

Now we finally know who Calgary will be playing against...
Tampa Bay(jeez another team that associates ice with something you put in drinks... )
I suppose we could be cooking up Marlin, since it seems Calgary has this thing with doing seafood lately
Another Trivia Question...
The Lightning are associated with a milestone in the NHL, what was it and when?

I take that comments as an insult.
There is nothing wrong with Hockey down South.
On that note go Tampa.

All PM's have their up's and downs man. I feel PET did more good for this country rather than harm. So I will not remove my avatar but rather I will show it with pride. The only other thing I would change it to is an Oilers emblem...:KICK ASS

Still think there's a problem with hockey in the South
The only excitement for hockey in Florida comes from the Snowbirds from Quebec... that would explain why hockey even had a chance in Florida ;)
Hey Bob, you're welcome to keep your Avatar, you stand by your convictions, I just wanted to point it out that I have no good memory of his 'leadership' ... a Canuck buck that was 1.20US in 1972 to less than 75 cents US, a military that had some remnant of respectability to being a joke... please enlighten me... what did he do, other than be as close as possible to a sidenote in a tabloid
I would prefer the Oiler logo to the late PM btw (at one time I was a hard core Esk fan), and if it came to having the Oilers in a final(any final) the Oilers would be my second choice, I'd prefer the cup in Alberta than anywhere else

Thats bs. This just gives me more reason to root for the Lightning. Im tired of hearing how hockey belongs to mother Canada.
I have nothing against Canadians or Canada in general but I will respond when my home is disparaged.
Go frikkin Lightning is all have to say...I hope they win it so I can hear more crap about Florida not deserving hockey.

I have no problem with having a team from the US win the cup...
Minnesota, Chicago, Boston, New York, I'd prefer Canada get it ultimately
I have a problem trying to understand how hockey can take hold when the only ice that has to be had has to be refrigerated continuously 12 months of the year...
I still get a giggle from Fox trying to make hockey understandable by 'painting a blue or red dot' on a black puck on white ice... to help people see the puck???
Perhaps someone down in Florida(not a Snowbird) will entice the rest of his /her cityfolk to embrace the fact there is an actual championship going on... if San Jose news was any indication, they were hard pressed to look beyond basketball or baseball.
Florida is playing host to the longest played for championship in pro sport, a Cup played for since the 1890's...
one lone voice speaks against me waxing Canadian on our history as the root of hockeyhood, I'll give you that Sloth...
When the winner hoists the sliver, I'll give it up where it's due
Your Run and Gun against Do or Die Flames... I'm happy Calgary is where it is... and I Believe :luxhello :luxhello :luxhello
