Australia Creates World's Largest Reef Sanctuary (http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml;jsessionid=E34311MRTJZ5ICRBAEZSF EY?type=scienceNews&storyID=5562177)
Australia's Great Barrier Reef became the world's biggest protected marine network on Thursday, a move environmental groups hope countries in Asia and Central America will copy in a bid to save their endangered coral reefs.

Australia has slapped a ban on fishing and shipping on a third of the reef, the planet's largest living structure, protecting one of its main tourist attractions which is threatened by over-fishing, pollution and higher temperatures.

"In terms of an insurance policy for the future of the reef, it's an incredibly important step, to ensure that the reef is there as a major economic driver, just as it is a natural icon for the country," said Bruce Kingston, spokesman for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

God....about bloody time!!!! It takes an average piece of coral 20 years to grow one inch. You see people walking out of the ocean with a 2 foot piece and do the math on the age of that chunk of coral. This should be like this over the entire globe. The Red Sea is an entire protected sancuary. If anyone is caught taking anything out of it, anything, it is immediate jail time and a $10,000 USD fine. That is 100% the way it should be everywhere in my opinion. 80% of the large ocean fish are now extinct. Something has to be done and fast.

Brings to mind Survivor Australia

Colby and Jerry went snorkeling as a reward challenge, Colby brings back shells and *coral*, all I could say was, 'he's in heck now' well not those particular words

I always thought it was protected prior to the 90's, the Molokini Crater, a few miles from Maui , is protected, not even allowed to touch it, though I suspect some people do... I didn't, I had enough respect for the life down there... it was a chunk of paradise
