Does anyone have a bonsai tree?

I was looking into this as my new hobby. I see websites that sell the stuff but so far the 3 (I plan to look for more) I have been to, don't have a forum or anything. I may have to buy a book. This is something I wouldn't want to kill.

I was just wondering if there was the slightest chance that anyone has one?

I have been making Bonsai trees for about 4 years now. THis one is a type of Azailia which I trained. It's about 6 years old. Unfortunately it has since died due to a hage heat wave we had. It was out all day when I wasn't home and the heat killed it. So pissed about that!!

Those are very cool, Bob! What kind of azalia was it? I might try it if they turn out looking that nice. What do you do with them during the winter?

The climate here is so mild that I leave them out all year round. It never snows here nor does it hit freezing. It hovers around 8'C during the winter months so it's ok. I will ask my old horticulturalist roommate to see what kind of Azalea it is for sure Ed. :thumb

Everything that you see in the pics are from my garden. The house is full of a 1000 plants, flowers, trees and moss. It is a crappy photo taken with my old cam. I will have better ones next spring with my Sony.

For the record my name isn't Bob...lol. The name is from my dog's nickname. It is pronounced Bo-Bee-Nis. It's all good though. :Blah

Sweet!

My mate grows them as well.

Love your garden - I cannot wait to finally get one - I have lived in flats for too long :Roll Eyes

Ya, my tomatoes and squash in the back yard are HUGE now! My pumpkins are flowering too and the butternut squash is going crazy. All due to my worm castings compost I make. My girlfriend and I compost everything, we toss out 2 small bags (the tiny white bags) of garbage a month as a result. Anyway, back on topic..lol...sorry.

I have an acquaintance who does the evergreens. They are ever nice, but the flowering azalea just appeals to me. I'm afraid it would get a little cold here to leave a shrub in a pot out all winter. Does it require a lot of sun?

No no, no worries Ed. A simple mistake man. It's all cool.

No, most Bonsai's don't like a lot of direct sunlight. The whole point is to keep them small. Shaded sunlight is ok or small amounts. Hence why the Azalea died. It is still there with all the moss intact just a dead tree now. SO sad. :(
You can take it inside during the winter just keep it clear of other plants if you use outdoor moss since there are many organisms in it that can wreak havoc on indoor plants. I have some nice seedums and cup lika in mine as well. Such cool fungus. It looks like a martini glass without the base. THe seedums are thos succulent purpley pink and green leaved things in the Azalea Bonsai. To the right of the tree. THere are over 160 spiecies of those here on the island.

Very nice tree you got there. I was looking to have something for my desk that I can be near & take care of. Not alot of sunlight, heat is usually eztreme during the summer. Another main concern is my cat which I fear will eat it.

Darn, I forgot about my cat. So much for that idea.
