MONTREAL - A Montreal cashier had his hand hacked off Saturday night in a machete attack, say police.

The 24-year-old employee was working at a convenience store in the Rosemont area of the city. Police say several men entered, grabbed the cashier, cut off his left hand and part of his right ear.

Police spokesperson Ian Lafreniere says the Sri Lanken victim had a run-in with a street gang about one week ago.

Police are ruling out robbery as a motive, as the cash register was not touched. They suspect it was gang-related.

The victim, who also has a fractured right wrist and several head lacerations, is in serious condition in hospital.

Doctors re-attached the victim's left hand Sunday, but say they don't know if it will be functional.
