Why do people (usually in SUVs) put tint or filters over their headlights? Most people I know want their headlights as bright as possible not darker. Does anyone have a reasoning behind this or is it purely to get a color from the lights?

It's to look 'cool'.
Here in Georgia if the cops catch you using them they will stop and detain you until they are removed. If you are caught a second time the covers are confiscated and you receive a fine. The third time they can be very harsh by impounding the vehicle and/or suspending your license. The same applies to tail light covers.
Another problem is the added color lights and kits. If they project in any horizontal direction and if they are blue, red, yellow or green they are illegal and are handled the same as covers. One young girl was stopped in a neighboring county for the third time with the little blue lights on the hood and received 6 months in jail. The lights can be confused with official and emergency vehicles.

I just don't know why people would want a boat (SUV) being made hard to see on the road. If anything I think we should make them like tractor trailors with lights along the top so there very clearly seen.

Yup. I hate SUVs. Well, at least the Uber huge ones. Too big. Except for Hummers. Mmmmm....Hummmmmmmmmmmmer. :)
I can't totally put down the SUB market becuase I like the Cadallic SRX. Technically, it's classified as a SUV, which I don't agree with. It's too streamline to be a SUV.

The only hummer I dig is the H1. Otherwise I can't stand the H2 and the coming soon H3.

I just don't understand the reason to dim the headlights...

No no Wazzy. We all love your Jeep. I said the BIG SUVs. Ya know, those stupid Chevy SUVs that take up 3/4 of the road. I forgot the name but, I don't intend to remember it for a future purchase. I wouldn't be caught dead in one of those monsters.
Your's is nice and small. Well, it has size to it but, not too much. Too much is bad.
I hate the new Xenon Headlights - they can be blinding. The Manufacturers claim that there is nothing wrong with them but they can kleave spots in your eys. Also they seem to have ramped up the incandescence so that dipped is a bright as High-Beam, Making it real fun to drive :Nope

:D I have those extra bright headlights. But with my tinted windows other people's bright headlights don't bother me. But having brighter headlights does help when your the person behind them driving.
I did an easy upgrade on my Mini Cooper's lights. Just popped in some Sylvania Silverstars. They use the same wattage as stock bulbs but are 50% brighter. No biggy, 15min install.

agreed on the headlight issues. I really hate the SUVs that sport the new xenon head lamps, as they are blinding to my smaller riding car. they sit at eye level from me! GEEZ! lol i think they should be outlawed! you dont see me driving around with my high beams on! stupid japanese anyhow for coming up with things to annoy everyone! sure they are better for driving, but too bright to oncomming traffic! ah reminds me of the old honda civics with the coffee cans in the back to make as much noise as possible! lol

:lmao No actually I kinda think jeeps are cool. Especially over here in the UK, you dont see a great deal of them around.
One of the most annoying "light features" (?) is motorbikes... you get some madman clad in bright red and white leather on this multicolored beast of a bike doing triple the speed limit with a bright pink headlight on the front!! I sooo hate that.
Thank god all bikers aren't like that. Just the select few.
wait a min wait a min. my headlight isnt pink its magenta. lol :lmao but yes i was one of those bikers but we usually do the crazy stuff late at night when most ppl are off the road. dont knock it until u try it. BTW just as a side note i havent owned a bike scence last august b/c i wrecked mine.
