Since hygiene seems to be a hot little topic, I thought I'd pitch in.
So, do you help keep the germ population to a low? Or are you the spreader kind?
I myslef, try to wash my hands before eating whenever possible, and after using the bathroom. Also, I frequently wash them BEFORE using the bathroom. Handling money for hours on end is ... quite disgusting.
I do after the toilet but not before?
You ned exposure to some germs - the current fad with everything Anti-bacterial is dangerous. That's why Asthma rates have sky-rocketed over the last 25 years. TOO Clean

A few germs never hurt anyone. But I do try and wash my hands after going to the bathroom.

I think a few germs is what I call "the outside world". It wouldn't hurt ANYONE to wash their hands after going to the bathroom.
No one wants to shake your hand when you've just urinated.
So if you go to the bathroom 3-6 times a day, it's safe to say that your hands are gonna be "infected by germs" 99.8% of the time anyways.
By the way, your theory of too clean is not entirely accurate. The fact that Asmtha has skyrocketed is because we detect it sooner then ever before... or we plain detect it! Not too long ago, asthma wasn't that popular of a disease (except for the bad cases, where you can't really not notice it!). I bet there are alot of other variables that made the percentage of people with asmtha sky rocket... can you say pollution? Or pixies!!!

It's been a long time since I studies Biomonitoring of Pollution but that was one of the main theories. The same is true of the expolosion in food allergies - if there were as many kids with Peanut allergies as ther eare now the population would have decreased over time.

Yes.
Always.
It's just not right otherwise.

I know what you mean by wanting to wash your hands before going to the washroom.
It's like, "Ok, I just exited from a huge population of people. I'm gonna scrub my hands first before getting down to business."
It's near impossible to keep hands clean. They're naturally grubby since we use them as first contact !
The worst is when you come out of the toilet and use the handle on the exit - it's always wet. You know it is only tapwater but.............. :p

That's the problem... washing your hands involves more then just tap water. People don't seem to notice the little soap dispensers. (I re-read my post, and this could lead to confusion, I'm not saying YOU, Maro, don't use soap. Cause I'm sure you do, I am talking about mankind in general... and maybe a few specimen of womenkind).
When possible, I open the door before washing my hands.
Another fun place to touch is the light switch (if there is one), it's either wet, or sticky.
Light switches and door handles are probably the least cleaned part of a bathroom, and they are the ones who need it the most I guess...

This is an interesting subject. I agree with Maro again on the over use of anti-bacterial soaps. I just use them to wash hands here at home. Not for the body. I know there are shower gels that are anti-bacterial and they are a no-no for women.
I remember at work there was one lady who washed her hands BEFORE going in the stall. I always found that a little weird. And the other funny thing is the ladies would dry their hands with the paper towels...then use that towel to grab onto the door handle exiting the bathroom, hold the door open with their foot and throw the towel away. (There was a trash can near the door). Then that same person would walk to the drink and vending machines and get food. There is as many germs on those buttons as that door handle would be. Probably more since most people would have washed their hands in the bathroom....
You do need to be exposed to germs to build up your immune system.
But yes, I do wash my hands after using the toliet...
Try doing Tech-support. Keyboards are the filthiest things imaginable. During a month I probably use everyone's at least once.

To cover the door situation after washing hands...I try to do it with a paper towel as well, but that's not always possible, esp. in places with those air dryers.
Washing my hands though after using the restroom is a 99% necessity. Even if there is no soap in the dispenser (yes, it has been known to happen, esp. at school). I don't know...I just feel totally wrong if I don't.

Yes, keyboards and telephones are crawling with those little guys named "Germs".
A report on TV said it is cleaner to eat your lunch in the bathroom than your desk. Because they use disinfectants to clean the restroom.
But yes, I agree with Maniacmous I do wash my hands afterwards...and it does feel weird or wrong if you don't.

Public restrooms here can be appalling.
I always wash my hands afterwards...
I remember once, in a particularly horrible restroom, the dispenser ran out of paper towels... and the door handle was just out of reach from the tap... I stood there for 15 minutes waiting for someone to open the door from the outside! :Holy Crap

You do not want to eat in a mens restroom after it has been used. At the movies or places were there are alot of people, there is an omnipresent layer of fluids covering most of the restroom floor.. it's not funny. You can't even put your pants down withouth getting them wet with other peoples pee laying on the floor. I mean comon! Aim for *ucks sake!
I do sometimes forget to wash my hands. I usually feel bad and go wash my hands when I realize that I have forgot it.

Anyone use their elbows for turning on the light switch or hitting the elevator/lift button?
I think people get freaked out too easily - we are infested with germs and Bacteria.
It's not going to kill you.

One day it will... but that's another subject.
Anyways, I agree you need a "healthy" dose of germs to "adapt". But washing your hands is a simple gesture, that demonstrates respect towards others. It's a polite thing to do before assaulting the box of donuts or bag of chips or popcorn.
EDIT: OH DEAR LORD, IT REPLIED THREE TIMES! HAT TRICK!
I didn't say NOT to wash your hands. :thumb

We debated this in another forum I go to.
What you're saying is, you don't wash your hands after you grab your unit.
So if you shake hands with me, I'm shaking hands with your unit.
Would you be upset with me if I came up to you and grabbed your weiner?
Well, it's the same thing. What you touch, I touch, if I touch your hands.

what's more important is balance of diet, balance of activity (running, physical sports, etc) and getting your nutrients. that's much more important than "did you wash your hands at the movie theatre." if you live a healthy life, it's going to do a lot more for you than anything else you can do.
but... if you try to rid the world of bacteria all you'll do is make future generations of humans weaker and much more susceptable to disease.

Okay, so I'm gonna use a "weak" arguments such as "long term studies", that prove the following:
People who washed their hands regularly, were less prone to get sick then people who didnt.
They are gonna live just as long as the people who didn't wash their hands, if not longer. Plus, they will have just as healthy children. There is a difference between living on the moon where there are NO germs and bacteries, and killing the ones that are gonna go directly rto your mouth, eyes, nose, etc...
You will still have a healty immune system, since we do live in a filthy world. Washing your hands, is only doing good.
Now, as far as using all those germ killing products 24hours a day (like they show in the commercial of Lysol (?)) and simply washing your hands after touching your penis and wiping your derrière, I think we can safely assume, that nobody wants to shake hands with your penis (thanks wazman for the detailled explanation as to why, I want people to wash their hands).
Also, when it comes to having weaker children if we live in a too clean world, altough I do agree witha ll fo you on this, I have never seen proof of these affirmations. So we might be full of $hit.

who did these long term studies? affiliations to drug companies that want you to stuck using their drugs to do what your body was once able to do on it's own? i'm glad one of us is an expert on the art of hand washing. as for me, i'll continue to "use" these "things" here because "i" like to "mock" people...oh wait...i'm "confused." as for using "we" don't say "we" when "we" is just "you." there are "we" who have different ideas than "you."
now i remember why i don't argue on the internet. for every fact there's 100 opinions.

now realize my last post was just making light of things, don't take it personally. it stands to reason that human error all the time and for every research study there's another that says the opposite. you can't sit here and tell me what you are based on the short sided nature of these studies. the main thing is not even hand washing, that's a good thing.
it's the whole "antibacterialized" lifestyle that can cause trouble for us in the long run. it's evolution, if your body isn't using it...

First time, and probably last time, I'll ever say this:
Take a chill pill.
I am sorry you took it like that. I didn't write that to be mean or rude.
I am simply saying that washing your hands, in my opinion, is both good for you, and a polite gesture.
Also, I was agreeing with you on the whole "antibacterialized" phenomena....
But that again, is only opinions. Cause without facts, we can't prove anything.
I do have to disagree about what you wrote (that for every reasearch that proves X, there can ban another research to prove X wrong).
Example: You cannot demonstrate to me that smoking is good for you. :smokin
Okay, bad exemple.
Anyways, to make good decisions, you need to base you choice on facts. You get these facts thanks to research. Research that try to simulate life has best it can, with all the unthinkable variables that might enter the equation you are trying to solve.
Anyways, wash your hands after peepee time please. You will then be able to shake hands, eat chips from the community bag and touch your loved ones without guilt!
