Minor scuffles were reported at a downtown pro-pot rally Saturday after Toronto police shut down the Canabian Day festival.
Police detained two people.
Several hundred people had showed up to take part in the rally to promote the legal use of marijuana. A stage had been rented nearby the provincial legislature, speakers lined up and six pro-marijuana music bands had signed up to perform.
Those plans fell through when police asked organizers to show them city-issued permits and insurance to hold the event.
The organizers, Cannabis in Canada, claim they were denied those permits because of the nature of the rally.
A website description of the event reads, "The purpose of this event is to give cannabis consumers an opportunity to gather together with others in the local communities, to encourage local cannabis activism, and to enjoy a day of relaxation, entertainment and cannabis pride."
Police at the event said they were on hand to keep the peace and maintain the law.
In Hamilton, Ont., the Canabian festival was celebrated with the opening of the city's first marijuana cafe.
The event in Niagara Falls, Ont. went largely unnoticed by the city's police. So what's the big deal with this? :Nope
They have the right to march - if they were refused a permit it should have been an iron-clad reason
:lmao The seventies are back!!! :lmao

Maybe it may something to do with all the grow houses that are popping up around the greater Toronto area.
They're invading neighbourhoods under the disguise as a normal household. Sometimes there are up to 3 or 4 grow houses per street! (Seen it on the news).
They don't pay for their own hydro electricity...they steal it somehow and don't pay a cent. Then the rest of us have to have our hyrdo bill hiked to pay for the ones who are not paying. I don't know what you think about footing their bill, but if they would only pay for their own electricity... :grumble. Hundreds of thousands of dollars, $50,000 per house for keeping those plants in optimum light...that's a lot of money.
Anyways, a rally like that is a good front for the growers. Others may be getting enjoyment out of it, but organized crime is in the midst somewhere, you can count on it.

Liberalism is great...so long as somebody else is paying for your lifestyle.
Thanks Sherry! I hadn't considered that angle on the situation, but thinking back on past experience with growers, you're right. If you're the kind of person who sees nothing wrong with breaking the law in one instance, it's really easy to justify breaking it in others. Only criminals flaunt the law, no matter how they phrase it.

LoL, one of my friends told me an interesting tidbit about grow houses that I'm not sure about. Can anyone confirm that houses that are growing mary-jane in the winter have no snow on the roof because of the output of heat, lol?

Can't confirm that, no.
If I were still speaking to my cousins on my mom's side I could ask them - they grow pot (and pay for their own utilities). But I stopped having anything to do with them after they left my grandmother's ashes on my parents' doorstep.
True story.

Think of it this way if pot became legeal the gov could tax it. Second if it was legal alot of the growers would stop b/c u wouldnt make as much money off it. BTW i dont smoke it i am accually alergic to it. I have tried it a few times but i alwys get sick and if i am around someone smokeing it i get head-aches.
