I recently saw Devils Brigade on History Channel up here... again
I really appreciate a WWII movie where Canadians aren't just a mention, they actually play a major role
Unlike a few other movies like Longest Day that only mention Canadian troops being actually involved a total of 3 times (I counted)
Any hoo... Though liked the movie, one thing bothered me about the portrayal of the Canucks... Every highlander spoke with a Scottish brogue ... now remember by this time of the 20th century Canada was no longer a Dominion of the Empire for about 80 yrs
Sargeant Pea****'s character appeared to have a Seaforth Highlander insignia... that would mean Vancouver... you don't run into many Scotsmen on that side of Canada
I never got a close enough look at Richard Dawsons insignia to figure out where he was from... Yes a highlander... and again a Scottish accent (maybe Black Watch)
Naturally there was a French Canadian, very appropriately from 22nd Regiment (the Vandoos)
Only one Canadian character did not have an accent; Sargeant O'Neal of the PPCLI (Princess Patricias Canadian Light Infantry), he was the Hand to hand combat instructor brought in to impress the Yankee 'criminals'
I'll say this, it appears they did their homework on the 'Picklees', the PPCLI battle school is in Wainwright Alberta (so many memories from that place... namely the mosquitoes)... just up the road (relatively) from Montana where the 1st Special Service Force formed
You'd think in 1968, when the movie was made, they would realize that Canadians would speak with a Canadian accent for the most part
