hey all.
i have a pair of fishes for several years now but i wondered the other day..
Do ya think fishies in a tank need exercise often to keep healthy?
i wondered cos my fish often swim about the confined tank often whenever theyre hungry, they've grown up alot since 9yrs ago.
my tank is about medium size (roughly 38"x 20"x 15")
here's me fish at the mo :Wink

Fish don't need to exercise because they swim around all day, and fish that are "fat" (example koi) actually need this fat to help their floating organs. A fish is a survival type animal, they will move when they need to, because their brain doesn't give them another option. Their "exercise" could just be a trigger to the time of day. Fish are known to be creatures of habit and are able to tell when food is coming. I work at PETsMART part-time, and when I open I have to turn on the lights, then I have to take off all the fish lids and then feed all the fish. Once the fish sense their lid is off they go crazy for their food. I <3 fishies ^_^

55 Gallon = 13.2"x10.8"x12"
I would say that is a pretty hefty size, a large not a medium.
A three year old koi can grow to 23" easy, are your fish staying small because they have no room to grow? If so, you should invest in a water garden. My next door neighbor has one and he lets me go back there and do my homework, it is so relaxing. Once I'm rich and famous ;) I'll have one.

Uhhhh, the size that you gave is 1710.72 cubic inches. There are 231 cubic inches per gallon which means the size tank that you quoted is 7.405 gallons
A standard 55 gallon tank is usually 48" L x 13" W x 22" D nominal outside dimensions.
Koi should be kept in a pond or municipal aquarium as they can grow to a couple of feet.

I'd try it myself if I thought it would work. There are some smaller goldfish that are colored in a similar fashion to koi that might work.
