View Full Version : Name My Car
Ok I know that some of you guys are older than me by a few years ;), but do you know what this is?

This is the project car for me and my dad over the next year or so. It might take a while longer because of the rarity of these cars nowdays.
PS - the Samurai behind it was sold, man I loved that littl 4x4 toy.

Looks like a Chevy Vega to me. Those were really fun cars to drop warmed up 350 small block, shortened 4.10 rearends and street slicks. A little tough to keep the rear-ends planted though.
First reply got it!
Yep - its a 1973 Chevy Vega GT(hatchback). When we get around to doing all the fun stuff we are actually going to drop a 4.3L V6 into it out of a S10 blazer... as for other goodies, i donno about forced induction yet, because my dad is still weary about turbos and stuff... although I told him about the Typhoon motor, he's still thinking about it.
Its going to be a daily driver car, but with a little bit of performance, mainly on the suspension side, like you said, it was hard to keep the rearend planted, and my dad knows that. He has had several of these cars over his time and once had one with a 350 droped in with all kinds go fast parts.
The main reason I'm helping is because I dont know much about muscle cars, and american motors. I've been working on my friends car before I could drive and I know more about electronics than high compression ;)
Nice job!

You are in for a lot of fun with that!
A 4.3L v6 aught to make that car nice & peppy for everyday use. A 3.1 DOHC might fit better due to being an even-fire 60-degree V6. It is narrower, the 4.3 is an odd-fire 90-degree V6 --- like n 8 Cyl with 2 cylinders lopped off so it is just as wide as a V8. Maybe a turbo 350 (auto) tranny with a stall converter and a shift kit. Or a Muncie 4 speed.
Oh the memories :KICKASS
Yeah, the 4.3L is just a 350 small-block with the last 2 cyl chopped off... and we were going to get a 350-turbo tranny or a 700R4 with a high stall tq-converter. But the other thing we are going to have fun with is the interior, try finding parts for that! lol But we are prolly gonna keep it to a minimal, fron buckets(maybe race seats) and nothing else in the back other than carpet and a subwoofer. But we were also thinking of a 272cid stroker and adding some low comp pistons if we were to do forced induction. but thats still on the "what if" board.

I know everybody always says T350, T350...
I have to say, Turbo 400. I have had several of those transmissions, and I think they are tougher and stronger thatn a 350, my experience. I just sold a car with an unmodified T400 with 400+ thousand miles, and it doesn't slip, not even a bit.
Why aren't you looking at a small GM V8? If you are dealing with the 90-degree motor already, 289 or a 305 would be a good choice, giving more power without really sacrificing fuel mileage, and you can often get them far cheaper than the more modern V6s.

Its not the emision controls... in the insurance :negative if it had a V8 then the insurance would be sky high. So the V6 will drop it and we will stil be able to make the same power at some point. But another eason is, we are getting a free motor from a friend. He's got like 5 of them lol. And the one we are getting is completly rebuilt with new heads, pistons, rods, crank- the works!

Sounds like a pretty good reason to me. Free for a rebuilt is always better than spending $1000+ on rebuilding a junkyard small block. The 4.3 is also better for daily-driver car.
The T400 would be an overkill tranny for that though. The 400 is great for running engines 500+ HP. The a warmed 4.3 V6 + T350 with a high-stall converter and a fairbanks shiftkit will squak the tires thru the gears with no effort at all.

Yeah, we figure get a $1000+ motor for free and throw in some $500 worth of extro or go fast parts and we'll have a pretty rockin' motor, especially since its going into a Vega. But yeah, my dad said we'll be getting a 350T transmission and a 2500 stall(something like that) with a shift kit. we will also need the rearend out of an S10, or other small pickup, and then get that rebuilt and reinforced. As for the exterior I think my dad wanted to paint it a burnt orange color. He says its an original Vega color, with the black stripe, and some simple custom rims. Everything on the car will be updated too. AC, power windows&locks, ABS, remote doors and hatch, plus some other stuff. The car is gonna me all modernized but still retain a classic look. ITS GONNA BE SO SWEET!
