President Fidel Castro said a crude oil deposit has been discovered off Cuba containing up to 100 million barrels, good news for a country that imports about half the petroleum it needs.

"This is the first discovery since 1999," Castro said Friday in a speech to a closed session of the National Assembly. His comments were aired on state television Saturday.

Castro said the deposit was located off the coast of Santa Cruz del Norte, east of Havana, during an exploratory drilling. He said production at the site could begin during 2006.

Cuba currently produces 75,000 barrels daily, about half of what it needs. It imports most of the rest, much of it on favorable terms from political ally Venezuela.

Oil specialists believe Cuba's waters in the Gulf of Mexico could contain large quantities of crude, just as those of Mexico and the United States do. Earlier explorations turned up only modest discoveries. Will the US invade? Or just offer statehood? :rofl2 :lmao

:jawsdownAny good? I just finished "Trojan Odyssey" by Clive Cussler. Typical Cussler, but not too bad.

Herman is great - if you love Dale Brown etc.

He writes a bit more at the human level but has very good air combat as well :Thumb

:KICKASS This one was probably the last with Dirk Pitt, Sr. He got married in the end and the Admiral retired, leaving Pitt to run NUMA. It's great to get one last Dirk Pitt book. Who knows though? There might be more...

I just bought Stephen Coonts' Saucer: The Conquest a hour ago. It's the sequel to Saucer. Weird science. :lmao

I'll have to try Richard Herman's stuff. I think I read some of his books years ago. The name sounds familiar.

Speaking of Dale Brown, I just finished 4 Dan Brown books. I thought they would be these highly religious books, but no... They were just like the Dale Brown/Clive Cussler stuff. Dan even looks like Dale. I bet they're kin. Don't let all the ignorant religious hoopla side track you. Dan Brown's books are pretty good. :Thumb
