The first five minutes of the 47th Grammy Awards Sunday just may have been the worst five minutes in the history of mankind. Not just because they featured the Black Eyed Peas dressed like break-dancing scarecrows or Gwen Stefani and Eve slaughtering the "Fiddler on the Roof" song or Los Lonely Boys gnashing their teeth over playing "Heaven" for the 8,783rd time or Maroon 5 just being there.

No, these five minutes stood out because they ended with all of the above collapsing together in a whirlwind of bad fashion and a nausea-inducing jam session. Let's get this party started? More like, let's kill ourselves.

How Franz Ferdinand ended up in that mess is as big a mystery as Queen Latifah's red satin dress.

By the end of a very long night, 107 awards were handed out at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, with the biggest handful -- eight -- going to the late Ray Charles. He was lucky to have missed the show.

Alicia Keys, winning four Grammys, did a fine job conjuring overwrought '70s soul, but did she have to duet with Jamie Foxx in his Charles guise? Why not just bring Val Kilmer and Gary Oldman up there for a medley of "Light My Fire" and "God Save the Queen"? And what was that tattoo on the back of Foxx's head anyway? "Vote for me Feb. 27"?

Adam Sandler looked ready to mow the lawn and Nelly looked prepared to caddy for 18 holes. The Grammy lifetime achievement awards winners got less airtime than Ellen DeGeneres, while Bono did his best to bring back Jose Eber's coked-out '80s salon owner look.

Green Day won for best rock album and behaved less punk than Tim McGraw, obediently thanking its label, radio and a bunch of other boring people nobody cares about. Prince had enough sense to stay at home, despite winning for best male R&B vocal performance and traditional R&B vocal performance.

Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez made their live debut together on a stage designed by Bed, Bath and Way Beyond with a script provided by the soap opera writers at Telemundo, while Tyra Banks and Hoobastank lured Maroon 5 into certain obscurity with the cursed best new artist trophy.

Kanye West attempted to justify the hype surrounding his album "The College Dropout" by acting out his death, funeral and embrace with Jesus (whose name he cleverly rhymed with Kathy Lee and Regis) during his performance, before walking off with the award for best rap album in style. "Everybody wants to know what I would do if I didn't win," he said. "I guess we'll never know." ...
