Colorado Springs police were alarmed when they discovered in February what Paul James Stewart Scott was allegedly looking for on the Internet - initially, he wanted to have sex with a mother-daughter tandem, then murder the child.
Investigators said the Boulder County man's plan evolved into something different, and every bit as disturbing - paying for sex with a child, plus his own murder at another girl's hands.
The alleged scheme didn't result in Scott's death, but it has landed the 53-year-old in jail on a $1 million cash-only bail.
"I was posing as an adult, setting this up for him," said Colorado Springs police Detective Clay Blackwell.
"We went ahead and contacted him and told him we might be able to fix things up, and arrange it. And all of a sudden, things changed, and he wanted to die, rather than killing the girl."
As the conversations continued, Blackwell said, Scott allegedly became more specific in what he was seeking.
"He wanted to have sex with an 8- to 12-year-old," said Blackwell. "When he got there, he was going to pick between an 8- or a 10-year-old to have sex with, that we supposedly had for him.
"And then there was going to be another one - we said, 'How about 16 years old?' - and that was the one that was supposed to kill him."
Scott, police said, wanted to be smothered while having sex with a child...
