Prices of a brand new car are a little higher than in the US..

Honda accord would be about $36,000-50,000 here... would have been $90,000+ in Singapore...

I was just wondering how many people over there in North America buy cars brand new?

Given the prices are not too bad, most tend to be under $20k.

To me, $20K USD seems to be the starting point of what a new car would be IMO. But, if you look at some smaller cars then yah they could be cheaper... but i'd say $20K is the starting point for any new car I'd be looking at... and $31K for the car I want(Subaru WRX STi).

$20,000 is on the low side, while you can get a car cheaper than that most are above that. If you want a full size truck with all the fancy stuff that seem popular now or an SUV, they are closer to the $40,000 range.

To answer your qustion there are a lot of new cars sold here, but there are also a lot of used cars sold. If you look at it in a purely financial stand point than it would make no sence at all to buy a new car, because most of the depriciation happens in the first year or two. Now I am not saying that you shouldn't buy a new car, I did and would do it again, but you just have to realize the trade offs you are making to get a brand new car.

I buy nothing but new cars. As for how much I would pay it depends on the car. I weigh the features (gotta be loaded), performance (don't want a dog on the hiway), reliability/safety record & styling (gotta look kickass) against price and decide if the ratio is favorable. I always do a lot of research on my intended victims to determine this value/cost ratio.

My Lexus RX300 was $52K CAN and I saw no problem in paying it. But I would not pay that amount for a Toyota Highlander (same chassis & mechanicals) regardless of how loaded it was because it looks like a box.

Under future consideration:

Lexus RX400h Hybrid - $61K CAN
Subaru Legacy GT Limited - $41K CAN
Subary Imprezza WRX STi - $47K CAN (iffey - a little more than I feel comfortable - the value is pretty low compared to cost).

I would pay no more than $20K CAN for any American-branded & designed car.

up to 25k canadian, and thats an upward NICER car

anything more to me is going to be going towards a really nice performance car.

Hm there's one for sale online at $65,000, it's a 2003 model. So I guess they would be about $100,000 here.

Hm.

I know that a brand new Ford Explorer is $72,000 brand new (min), ford F250 is $101,000 min.....
