"DOOM." "Movie." "The Rock." Say these words to ten different gamers and you'll probably get ten different reactions. The upcoming DOOM movie from Universal Pictures has been the topic of much conversation since it was announced that Dwayne Johnson (a.k.a. former wrestler The Rock) would be starring in the film adaptation of id Software's classic videogame series. To date, there hasn't been much official info released on the film, but Universal has now released some a few stills and some bits of information, giving us at least a small idea of what to expect in terms of story, cast and crew.

The basic premise of the film places the characters in the year 2145, the same year as the recently released DOOM 3 videogame. Forgoing the Martian setting from the game, a group of marines is sent to a distant (unspecified) planet to secure a science lab under attack from creatures of unknown origin. In addition to The Rock as Sarge, the film also stars Karl Urban as John "Reaper" Grimm, the formerly nameless space marine who acts as the film's central character. It's the biggest role to date for big role for Urban, previously seen as Eomer in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, as well as major roles in The Bourne Supremacy and The Chronicles of Riddick. The film also stars Rosamund Pike (Die Another Day) as Dr. Samantha Grimm, as well as DeObia Oparei, Ben Daniels, Raz Adoti, Richard Brake, Al Weaver, Yao Chin and Dexter Fletcher. (captions below provided by Universal.)

Sarge (The Rock) and Destroyer (DeObia Oparei) enter a corridor with ventillation ducts overhead. Suddenly Destroyer is spooked by something in the duct and falls to the ground firing into the duct-work as he falls.

The Kid (Al Weaver) emerges from the Ark into the Wormhole Chamber of Olduvai and promptly pukes in front of the rest of the squad.

Although the movie has traded the Martian setting of the game for an unspecified planet, the photos show a setting not far off from the dark futuristic settings of DOOM 3. In a nice nod to the developers, one of the scientist characters has been named after id Software lead programmer John Carmack, as alluded to in one of the captions above.

Directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak (Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds), Doom technical crew includes visual effects supervisor Jon Farhat (The Nutty Professor, The Mask) and creature FX supervisor John Rosengrant (Terminator 3, The Lost World). The film began shooting in Prague in October 2004, and is currently scheduled to hit theaters on October 21, 2005.

ahhh, it's giving me flashbacks of Resident Evil The Movie... Get it out! Get it out!!! How could they do that to the game?!?!?! Especially the second RE movie!!! I hope the same doesn't happen with Doom.

thing is some if not most of the mosters will be CGI so hopefuly they put some cash into making them fit in.

Yeah, I hope so. They should learn a thing or two from Alien VS Predator. I didn't like the movie much, but the special effects were pretty good. But I don't mind it much if the monsters look a little fake as long as they keep the movie true to the game.

i never did see alien versus predator, but those creatures can be from costume, the demons from the doom world cant really be made, and it costs ALOT to do so.

it will most likely be like resident evil, or area 51 of the sort.

was there really a storyline to doom? it was really just getting out of the facility wasnt it?

Definitely, most of the scenes in Alien VS Predator were costumes, I'm obviously talking about the parts that were CG.

There isn't really a story in the game House Of The Dead either, but they still managed to make one of the worse movies ever.
I just hope that with Doom they make the movie so it resembles the true feeling of the game.

I want to see it but I think it will suck since some elements that make doom doom are not in the movie (mars and authentic space marine armour for example)

If you wonder why there is no space armoror anything fancy like the portal to hell its becase this is based on Doom the original story not Doom III i thought it was a great movie though with some corny parts but plenty of cool parts

Yeah, but if you think about it. the original doom didn't have a story around experimenting on criminals. Plus In Doom 3 (SPOILER ALERT) towards the end of the game, You go to the Dig Site. This was also mentioned in the movie, except in the movie they did'nt open the gates of hell......they found Skeleton remains of a woman and her kid.

Guys, Check out this review from another guy. From imdb. Don't let me put you off this movie. even though i hate it:

Doom was quite an entertaining video-game turned movie. It promised violence and it definitely delivered. While you did not have to think too much about what was going on, it did have a plot with some great twists. I expected a straight forward "shooter" movie, very similar to the game and, frankly, I expected it to be boring. I was anything but. The video game style of the movie was limited pretty much to one scene. One awesome scene that, if you felt the movie lacked in violence in any way, should fulfill your blood lust.

Sarge (The Rock) is the leader of an elite USMC team which is sent to a space station on Mars to investigate a problem of disappearing scientists. Upon discovering most of the scientists dead, they soon realized they were not going to stay that way. I do not want to give away much more than that but there is more to this movie.

Sarge's team consists of Destroyer (Deobia Oparei), the religious Goat (Ben Daniels), Duke (Raz Adoti), Portman (Richard Brake), The Kid (Al Weaver), Mac (Yao Chin) and John Grimm (Karl Urban), who happens to be the twin brother of one of the scientists, Samantha Grimm (Rosamund Pike).

Doom started off pretty slow, but once the ball got rolling, it resembled the game more and more and kept the excitement up as well. All of these actors pulled off their parts to great avail. Really, how could they go wrong? I went into this movie with extremely low expectation. Especially after reading some of the reviews so I was very pleasantly surprised. I can recommend this movie to those who love a good, bloody action movie. Basically, if you can relate to Sin City, then Doom is also the movie for you. 9/10

I saw it as well, not bad. The ending just went on and on though. You do need to be a Doom/Sci-Fi fan to appreciate it as well.

Well... I guess I'm going out for a rental. I have liked Dwayne Johnson's previous roles. I'd like to see if he made this rather bad-looking VG-to-movie into something enjoyable.
