Man Hooks World Record 124-Pound Catfish: ~source (http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050525/ap_on_fe_st/big_fish_3)
ALTON, Ill. - It sounds like the sort of tale Mark Twain might have cooked up: A man fishing in the Mississippi River hauls in a blue catfish roughly the size of a sixth-grader. But this is no fish story. Early Sunday, Tim Pruitt caught a 124-pound blue catfish.
To get a sense of just how big that is, the state record holder was a mere 85 pounds and the world record holder tipped the scales at 121 pounds, 8 ounces.
Now, Pruitt, whose fish has already been weighed in the presence of a conservation police officer and measured by a biologist for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, is expected to submit documentation to the International Game Fish Association so that it can be certified a world record holder.
Once that is done, the catch should be approved as the world's largest blue catfish, replacing the current champion that was caught Jan. 16, 2004, in Lake Texoma, Texas, said Becky Reynolds, a spokeswoman for the association...

Not that great. It's way too big and the flesh would be stringy and tough and probably have a bad taste.
The best size for a catfish is 1 - 3 pounds. Either whole or filleted. Add salt, pepper, dash of Cajun seasoning and battered in cornmeal, fry in pan or deep-fry and serve with hushpuppies, fries and coleslaw with lemon and tarter sauce on the side.
As they say, "That's some good eating." :thumb :food :thumb :food :thumb

Damn, I wonder how old that fish is to get that big. "Old granddaddy of Texoma lake" comes to mind. I would expect a fresh water fish that big to be at least 30 years old.
I'd bet there were sea monster stories by the cottagers on that lake (a Texan 'Nessie'?) :lmao

I know, I was just kidding. I've been fishing (and eating) for quite a while now!
Actually, catfish is one that I don't really care for. Really difficult to get it to hang onto a flavor... very bland fish. Give me trout, any day! BTW: my fish fries are the good ones: fresh fish, right out of the water, and fried on the campfire. Yes, I am overweight from catching and eating my own food... :Sigh

hehehehe I always catch my "fish" (sticks, fillets) straight out of the box at home from the
grocery store or on a bun from BK or Micky D's or sometimes on a plate at Capt D's. :food :lmao
I never did care much about eating fresh caught fish, like frying them up over a camp fire or
taking them home to fry. :Nope When I used to go fishing back many, many, many years ago I
would always just do a catch and release.

I can't handle boxed fish... yech. Sometimes I'll buy fresh (unfrozen) salmon or others from the grocer, but the thought of a fish stick just turns my stomach.
Hence... I don't eat fish that often... :cool_shad

I'm like getit29. I prefer my fish (saltwater only!) cooked from frozen.
You can chase me up & down the street with fresh trout or catfish (yuck!). Give me Cap'n Highliner any day.

I can eat fresh or frozen fish. It doesn't matter.
But I love fishing. I plan to do some fishing in Florida this year. Also I should get off my behind and get my fishing license and go fishing like I said I've been going to for the last ten years.

A catfish that big would probably be much older than 30. I'm not sure how long fish live, but lobsters have been known to live over 100 yrs. :jawsdown

From the research of the web that I did today, Blue catfish grow faster and live longer than channel catfish. They are the largest member of the catfish family. Blues may grow to lengths of over 55 inches and may weigh more than 100 pounds. Maximum life span for blues is unknown but is probably 20-25 years.
