I just saw a topic heading on a website that obviously was a joke, but the more I thought about it, the better the idea sounded.

The article was about Amnesty International and it's complaints about the prisoners down at Gitmo. The title was "Adopt and Islamic Terrorist" or something of the like. But that's actually a good idea.

All you hear in the news is about how badly the prisoners are being treated. Nobody offers any help, just criticism. I thought "How about a program like UNICEF" or the Children's Network or the like? Adopt one of the prisoners and raise money to send them stuff. Little CARE packages to make their life better. It could be a church project or even a class project at school when it starts up again. Can't you just imagine all the kids going door-to-door raising money for this?

It would be something positive instead of yet another negative idea.

What do y'all think? :What the

Are you really being serious here? I will assume you are serious, and you actually believe what you wrote here and take this topic at face value.

I am curious how sending a care package to prisoners will improve the conditions they are being kept under.

Will sending money cause the prison guards to beat the detainees any less? Will sending food, clothes or medicines will make the detainee's lives any easier? I doubt it because most of the abuse stories we are getting are based around how these detainees and suspected terrorists are tortured to release information. Please remember that the detainees here (great care is used to not utter the word 'prisoner' in official statements) are often thrown in this prison without a trial simply because they are suspected terrorists - often without a shred of proof.

These aren't the 'suspected' terrorists that the US encountered in Iraq, these are the Taliban, these are the same lowlifes that orchestrated 9/11, and a host of other activities

You may recall that Canada included itself among those countries to bring these jerkoffs to justice, Canada is still in Afghanistan mopping up.
The Western world gave the Taliban an ultimatum to turn Osama over, they didn't, so we removed them from power, it wasn't about them protecting their home, it was a base of operations that they could work from

Where do you suggest that the POWs go? Leave them in the Country they were captured in?... eventually we can repatriate them, but not with our boys still there
How about downtown T.O.?
Although a place like Alert, NWT might be secluded enough, I wouldn't want them polluting our pristine North :smash

Oh I don't doubt for a second that there are plenty of real terrorists locked away in there. For the proven, convicted terrorists I agree wholeheartedly - lock 'em them in the deepest, darkest hole you can find. I'm all for it - you betcha.

But is that all that is in there? Do you know for certain there aren't some Iraqi dissidents or others that are simply suspects? During a war suspects and dissidents 'disappear' into places just like this and I dare anyone to prove different.

Since many of the prisoners captured in Afghanistan just happened to be 'holed up' in underground bunkers and caves, I wouldn't likely give them any break. War is a horrible thing

But if you were to ask someone who lost a loved one in the World Trade center, you don't think they would be as forgiving? We're talking about a society that harboured people that didn't have the kahonies to attack other soldiers, instead they chose to harm civilians

They deserve to be locked up
