Well, it used to be an online thing - James (WeeJamer) and I met on Yahoo about two years ago. We talked for a while, then for various reasons kind of lost touch, but got back together after about a year. After that, everything happened pretty quickly. We decided to meet in person, so James flew over here October 7th last year (which is also the day that we officially called our relationship serious). We've seen each other almost every other month after that. In March this year, Jamie moved in with me (we got engaged last Christmas). So, yeah...this thing's pretty real. :KICKASS
As to your question, we'd like the wedding to be yesterday, if possible. It's a money problem at the moment, especially since we want to have things traditional. ;)
Welcome, Ira! Glad you could join us. :thumb
Thanks so much! :o I've been watching James (WeeJamer) post here for a while now and finally wanted to check things out myself. Also, I think this is the first forum I've ever been to where people actually start conversation :clapping

That's so exciting! All the best to you and your future wife :)Where did you guys meet?
Prices for things vary hugely, depending on what you want. In our case, the most expensive thing to get will most probably be Jamie's kilt. He's a true Scotsman and being that just has to wear a kilt to the wedding. I'd prefer the kilt to be his - for emotional reasons as well as practicality, since he should (according to tradition) technically wear a kilt to whatever big event might come up in the future anyway. But then..my dress probably will not be exactly cheap, either. Our guest list, on the other hand, is way smaller than yours; We only want close family and a few friends with us that day. Also, we ideally want to get married in Scotland. I'll need to finish university here in Germany before we can go back to Scotland, though, so getting there might take a bit longer than we'd like.
I just love hearing about weddings, so feel free to talk about your plans a bit more.

Yeah I more or less have to wear a kilt, being a scotsman and all :bootyshak
But we would have to really shop around for a place to get married. Cause I know we can't go expensive, but I am not getting married in a hut or Wal Mart.
Could we get married in a McDonald's Drive thru? It would sort out the catering... Hmmm :Roll Eyes

Oh yes we are very, very happy. In the 13 years we have been a couple we have never had a cross word. She is a captain in the U.S. Navy and is gone for long periods of time. We manage to speak with each other almost every day and we constantly trade e-mails. I usually go out to the ship a couple of times during each cruise so the seperations are not too bad.
She is in the middle of her last deployment and is up for a billet in the CNO's office at the Pentagon with a double step in rank which should occur next year. This will mean that we can actually have a home together and we are planning to start a family next spring. :devil :banana :devil

Whoa, pardon my brutality and no offence, but the first thing that I thought of was, "Now THAT gives new meaning to saluting the ranking officer for him!"
Welcome Ira, too, from lurkers like me. I try to keep my posts below a 100 a year! :lmao I know all about the wedding thing. We have "pared" the list down to 400 guests (!) and are looking to keep the costs under $12000 US! The food is the worst: $8000 to feed everyone, and that's flat rate.
I am jealous in one respect though: I am a Scotsman, and my wife to be will not have me walking her down the isle in a kilt for some reason (See above crude remark to get picture)! I couldn't even get the caterer to serve hagus and Guinness at the reception, although I may sneak in a Guinness or three! :devil

Our wedding would never reach the size of yours :jawsdown
We really only want to have a small party attending ceremony and reception, we'll probably invite 20 people at tops. James and I want to have time enough to get around to talk to everyone during reception, you know? Also, it's obviously a matter of money. Getting my dress and James's kilt outfit will be expensive enough as it is. Our clothing is something I do not want to compromise on.
Sorry to hear your wife to be won't let you wear a kilt. I personally am very proud of James being a Scotsman and would think it weird if he did not wear one to the wedding. It's tradition as well as history..James is proud to be Scottish and so am I.
Haggis, on the other hand, is a totally different matter. I wouldn't want that as our wedding meal, either :Nope

Ira,
Alas, I am an American with Scottish roots. My grandmother on my mother's side got on the boat in Scotland and disembarked in Canada; she was an Angus. In the early part of the century, this was a very common way to gain American citizenship. My grandfather's family on my mother's side also emigrated through Canada; we have a few records for my great grandfather. In a strange sort of Hollywood twist, the orphanage where he was placed as a young boy burned down and it supposedly had a deep family tree put in his file by my great great grandfather. He was a Middleton. According to what we can find, there are possibilities that his family also was Scottish. My mother went to Scotland and found a few Middletons, but no threads that looked promising. She even has a picture of a church window with the Middleton name in it. My father's side is pretty much American mutt, and I used to joke we were descended from a Georgia prison colony parolee!
So far she has hit a dead end in Hamilton, Ontario with the Middleton name. I want to get involved next to help, but I need to get up to speed on it.
All I know is that I like to try any beer and I go out of my way to find brewpubs and microbreweries on trips for food and beer. I can't wait to go to Scotland in a few years (I hope!), but wedding and kids are first. My fiancee is of Irish descent, so I told her we would have to have Guinness at the reception. If we can, I want to take my children with me to Scotland, as I also cannot wait to have kids and be a dad. We are not yet ready for kids, but I am still jealous of Rodney, and so is my fiancee. :Sigh She wants kids pretty bad too, as she is 26 now and I am 29.
Oh, and my fiancee was mad but I was mildly inebriated when I posted that, so it actually had both meanings! :beer She was working on homework and I was helping her trying to keep her calm. One more year of college and she will be out as a teacher. Now to find a job...... :banghead
Hope that helps you with my previous posts. My friends joke that to understand me, they would have to be as nuts as me. :nuts
Really? Has he shown you the pictures from the boat trip? :lmao :rofl2 :lmao
:Wink
Of course I know the pictures. :)
I think James stopped drinking alcohol a few months before he met me. Said he never liked himself when he was drunk. Since I don't drink alcohol either, I'm quite happy about that. :thumb

I am starting to think there is never really the right time to have kids. I was thinking we'll have a baby once I'm done with uni (which will be in about one year), but then obviously you need to look for a job and probably should not become pregnant a month after you started somewhere new. A few years work experience would be nice, saving some money...This way of thinking, however, lead me to us having kids by the time I'm somewhat over 30 years old. I always wanted to have kids in my twenties. Worrying about that, I looked around and realized that there are at least three couples that I know who even made it through uni with a baby. They made it work. I don't think it was easy for either of them, but they're all very happy and they....well, they just made it. So now I still want to finish uni before anything happens, but then... :devil :banana :devil

In Germany you have quite a good chance to find a job as a teacher immediately after school...Is that different over there?

If you don't mind relocating to someplace 1500 miles away, yes you can find a job very easy! In Las Vegas, they will give you housing when you work for them. However, in Michigan there are four or five teaching schools and there are two in Kalamazoo (Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo College) so this area is flooded with students with teaching degrees who cannot find a job and like it here so they won't move. We may move to our old town, but that means I give up my career, as technology there is stagnant and the nearest big town is dying fast. My brother and sister in law are also teachers and they fancy moving back here, but they both need jobs first to be able to afford to live here.
And yes, there is no good time to have a child, but there are things we need to get done (like her education). I told her she could wait till we are married at least! Then all my pokin fun at her ends. :lmao

Did you like it here?
Whereabouts in Scotland did you live (and why did you leave beautiful Alba)?
Pleasure - many moons ago. Most nights in the Europa bar.
Isle of Skye. It was only a stopover for me on the way to UNI.
