The Rebel XT is one amazing camera. I use the Canon 50mm F1.8 - a very nice prime lense for cheap! $70, great for portraits and low light, Sigma 18-125mm DC - great all around lens with a nice wide angle aperture and decent zoom, sharp as a tack too, and the Tamron 28-300mm XR which is sharp and has good wide angle as well as killer zoom. Those 3 lenses do me just fine for now on my Rebel XT. Also the RXT has a 1.6 x crop factor in the CMOS chip. So you have to mulitply your lenses x 1.6. So the Tamron for example becomes a 28-300mm x 1.6 or 44.8-480mm lens. The CMOS has such silky, low noise photos and it has loads of options. Its almost a prosumer DSLR and blows away anything else in its class.

Go with the Rebel XT over the Rebel for all its added features and Digic II Processor. Way faster and loads more control/features!

It would be a most excellent choice. :thumb
If you can swing it, get one of the 50mm 1.8 lenses while you are at it. It will be great for the low-light club stuff. Like Bobenis said, they are only around $80.

That lens is nice but not worth that price. I would just get the Sigma 18-125mm DC instead. It is an amazing lens. I bought the body only as well and also bought the battery/vertical grip. A necessity man. You could get the grip and the Sigma for the price of the 17-85mm with some cash left over for other things, like a good Lowepro Stealth AW bag. Your call though.
