China is prepared to use nuclear weapons against the US if it is attacked by Washington during a confrontation over Taiwan, a Chinese general said on Thursday.

If the Americans draw their missiles and position-guided ammunition on to the target zone on China's territory, I think we will have to respond with nuclear weapons,” said General Zhu Chenghu.

Gen Zhu was speaking at a function for foreign journalists organised, in part, by the Chinese government. He added that China's definition of its territory included warships and aircraft.

“If the Americans are determined to interfere [then] we will be determined to respond,” said Gen Zhu, who is also a professor at China's National Defence University.

“We . . . will prepare ourselves for the destruction of all of the cities east of Xian. Of course the Americans will have to be prepared that hundreds . . . of cities will be destroyed by the Chinese.”

Gen Zhu is a self-acknowledged “hawk” who has warned that China could strike the US with long-range missiles. But his threat to use nuclear weapons in a conflict over Taiwan is the most specific by a senior Chinese official in nearly a decade. You've been warned. :smash

God, I'm so glad I live 20 miles from STRATCOM. No radiation sickness, here. We'll just die, nice and neat.

Don't you think I'm kidding.

China has threatened the same thing numerous times before; the only reason it got air play this time around is because of the current political stance the US is taking with other countries.

As to why China would threaten the US... they probably feel, like most other countries, that Bush is arrogant enough to think he can interfear in a despute between two foreign countries and enforce a solution that benefits the US.

At least most of the wind currents will blow the radiation away from Canada. :smokin

China's the last Big Bad Wolf country from the Cold War era. They're flexing their muscle again.

China talks alot of BS, but they can't live without us buying up their products.

Now that China has been given full control over Taiwan it's a done deal. If the people of Taiwan don't like it then fight or leave now. In truth Taiwan is a big money maker because of the trade markets, but some how I don't think China's control will bring such good luck. In short, the big deals will be lost and Taiwan will soon become nothing more than another part of the bland old China.

I've got an Idea, let Bush give them all Green Cards to live and work here in America. :Thumb

Bejohnson pointed this out to me a while back:

Taiwan has a defense treaty with the U.S. As Taiwan is too small to have more than a token army of its own, it has a treaty in place with the States to defend it.

This means the U.S. must protect Taiwan whether it wants to or not. If China attacks Taiwan, the U.S. will be right in there - which means China will have to make good on their bluff if they want to go through with this stupidity.

China has been Hot & Horny to get their hands on Taiwan for decades and everyone knows it. This is the #1 reason this defense treaty exists.

I wonder whose side North Korea and the former Soviet Union will stand on? Do we really want to find out? This could get very nasty.

While I know you are kidding here, the scary fact is that if the U.S. goes after China, Canada will end up right there beside them and we will catch our fair share of ICBMs. Places like Toronto and Edmonton will have their names painted on the side of them.

Somehow I doubt that. You have too big an Asian population in the West. I think Canada would try to remain neutral through it all.
