Not sure if I'll be there yet.. After the howlin' good time and leaving with all that cool stuff I'd really like to, but I could get hit by a truck between now and then.

It's just too early to tell for me. I'll have to see when the time gets closer.

We should get the server up there at 6 PM to get our dinner orders. Can they do that? Better than roaming the stairs and all! I think we should be there. Heck, I will be newly married! :Holy Crap

I tried this year. She had to go shopping for fabric for bridesmaid's dresses. I told her she was going next year. I just need to get a better hotel room for all of us. Wonder if she'll be okay sleeping in a room with DAS?!!! :lmao

I would definitely love to come this year. I had plans to go last year but issues with transportation and money arose and was not able to do so. Assuming (i really shouldn't use that word) I am able to get a new job, save some money, get the time off and have a vehicle to get up there I should be able to and I would love to bring my fiancee but that is dependant upon whether or not she can get the time off as well.

I'd love to come, but my wife wants to go to Vancouver, this year. PayPal has a call center there, and so she knows everybody there. Making the trip between Omaha, to Toronto, to Vancouver, and back... that's a lot of mileage, and I can guarantee that I'd end up driving it.

Well, we'll see.

I don't know? We were planning on going but that's up to Brasherman. He's getting married in less than a month and I think he finally realized that with his wedding and all, there might be too much going on this summer for him to go. And if he doesn't go, I doubt I will.

But I guess we'll see.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Unfortunately, the get together 04 will not happen this year (2006). So I’ve decided to reschedule it for next year; July 21, 2007. I’m not sure on a time or place yet, but it will be in or near Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

The main reason it’s being rescheduled this year (2006) is because of our 8 month year old baby girl. It would be a late evening and thus we can't take the baby at such a young age. This would mean Sherry couldn’t be there. Without Sherry helping me at the event it's next to impossible to pull off. Also, I'm sure you want to see Sherry more than my ugly mug anyway ;)

well.... I kept saying I'd make it out to one of them get togethers...

I'm definately going to make it for next summer, I'm moving my sorry butt out to Ottawa within four or five months. There's a stable job and roof to go over my head there, plus a good PC Technician course at a college.... oh yeah, and a woman :P

You can all count me in for a summer '07 get together ^__^

hmm I will try my best to make it to this one, some of the other forums members want me to pick them up on the way but ya going from Cali to there ya thats a lot of driving lol so I think I will fly there.

Saturn2888
11-01-2006, 10:05 PM
LOL! Other forumers eh?

Dude, if you fly to Toronto, I'm on your way dude. Like I said, there's a station for jets and planes about 30 streets from my house. While it's not an airport, I doubt you'd need one, lol!

You know, I could drive you 1/2 of the way so if you drove to my house, I'd drive you to Canada and back and then so we'd be both doing the same amount of driving. How's that sound? Maybe pick up Robo (who could probably bus himself down there in like 3 hours) on the way.

I'm gonna try to make it best I can because this would totally rock especially now that I have enough cash for it.

Race234
11-01-2006, 10:43 PM
alright I may and may being the strong word here, consider driving we have some time to plan it out but I have to find someone else in cali that would want to go because I would not want to make that drive to your place by myself for the reason of how bored I would be lol

Saturn2888
11-02-2006, 12:58 AM

Race234
11-02-2006, 01:03 AM
well if you can find someone in Cali that wants to go and is willing to drive and pay for gas and what not then I will consider it, also this way we could double team driving to reduce the amount of time it takes to get there but I dont know if I would take my neon for such a long drive maybe the hummer as its roomier, we will have to see.

Not only that but he has to schlep all the stuff, and his family for these get-togethers into his car and drive there. Then there's lodging and meals, not to mention the long distance traveling with a young child. And when it's all done he has to turn around and cart family and equipment back home again - during which his real work gets neglected.

Not something I can see him or Sherry terribly thrilled about doing unless you guys are offering to make this a financially attractive proposition he can't refuse...

That's pretty accurate.

It's a lot of work, but I do enjoy seeing everyone. I'm not sure I'll have one this year either as Elizabeth is still very young. If I do have it this year it might have to be done closer to where we live. I'll let everyone know a month or so before the event date.

I wish there was something more I could do to help, if the finances involved in setting up this event is an issue.

I'll take some XXL 3GM tee's , also can I make a donation in person, I can't get a paypal account w/o a credit card, I tried the bank account way, it just doesn't work for me.

Oh yeah, do our American credit cards work in Canada?

nilzxx
05-04-2007, 11:24 PM
They should, but they r going to charge you a small fee. Cash will be probably better for you. (Usually crdit crads r international)

Saturn2888

Guess I'll have to remember to pull some if I go.

das7282
05-05-2007, 12:19 AM
Oh yeah, do our American credit cards work in Canada?

I used my credit card in Canada and I didn't have a problem. They didn't charge me a fee either... they just converted it to the current exchange rate at the time.

In fact it's actually better to use your credit card as much as possible in Canada because most places charge you a higher exchange rate if you use US money and other places want to charge you a fee to convert it. For example, when we went to Canada the first time we just exchanged our US cash at the hotel (which is a service they happily do) but they charged us something like 15% or 20% more than the current exchange rate (I can't remember exactly though).

Saturn2888
05-05-2007, 12:29 AM
Okay, I like that better.

nilzxx
05-05-2007, 01:19 AM
[QUOTE=das7282]... they just converted it to the current exchange rate at the time.QUOTE]
And that's where they make money.

Saturn2888
05-05-2007, 04:26 AM
I'm confused. Either way, your quote got messed up.

das7282
05-05-2007, 08:32 AM
And that's where they make money.

No, there's now money making involved with exchanging one currency to another unless you charge more that the current exchange rate.

For example, the current US to Canada exchange rate says one US dollar is worth $1.10 in Canada.

So if I go to a McDonald's in Canada and buy a value meal for me and my friend (at $5.00 per value meal) and I pay the $10 with my credit card, when I got home to that States and I checked my credit card statement, it would show that I spent $9.02 (USD) at a McDonald's in Canada.

However, if the reverse had happened and a Canadian came to the US and spent the same $10 at McDonald's, the would get a charge on their credit card the says they spent $11.07 (CAD) dollar in a McDonald's in the US.

It's actually quit simple and nobody is really making money on it unless they're charging you a fee to exchange. And because credit cards are pretty much international, most credit cards don't charge a fee when you use their card in other countries.

Saturn2888
05-05-2007, 03:47 PM
I'm sure that's what nilzxx was saying, but I doubt it's right. Doing a currency exchange shouldn't cost any money. Is there anyone that knows about this in more detail? (btw, I love xe.com)

Manic Mouse
05-05-2007, 08:25 PM
Whenever I have to travel to the U.S. I pull cash from my Canadian accounts the ATMs down there. That way I get the best exchange rates as laid out by the banks. Likewise Americans visiting Canada can visit our ATMs to access their accounts. Currency exchange really is no problem between our countries.

Since this is now the second year in a row that this event was canceled it looks like these get-togethers are a thing of the past.

Too bad as they a great way for 3GM members to get some face-time with each other, Rodney and Sherry. I attended one of these a few years back with my wife & daughter and we had an amazing time. I met some really cool people and I personally thought that was one of the coolest things about this community.

I am sorry to see it go, but fully understand Rodney not wanting to do them anymore. They are very difficult and expensive to organize, both before and after. Now with his increased family and business demands these can be darned near impossible ot orchestrate.

Perhaps if a member living in an area that is easily accessible to 3GM members wants to take up the baton and organize these I am sure there will be more than a few members here willing to participate.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head. I have little time these days and the spare time I do have is spent with my daughter :heartbeat

I second you on the "Perhaps if a member living in an area that is easily accessible to 3GM members wants to take up the baton and organize these I am sure there will be more than a few members here willing to participate."

Maybe just plan a time we can all get together. You know, keep it simple and don't make it to official. Maybe go bowling, small LAN party or something along those lines. As you mentioned, when sponsors are involved with expensive product, it gets complicated and takes a lot of planning to pull it off. Not to mention the work after it's all over. So who's in the Toronto area and would like to meet up for a night out on the town (so to speak)? ;)

Well thats why I recommended a state to state kind of get togethers, like for some members it hard to go to Canada so maybe different people in the states could hold their own little get togethers for people who are more local to the area, I was thinking of holding a 3gm Lan Party once my new rig is done and everyone in the area that wants to attend could show up and then maybe if planned right there could be another person in a different state or territory that could do the same and we can then connect to the same server and play a massive lan game or something like it.

That's a good idea. Let Rodney, Sherry, and the Gamechild take a month-long roadtrip in next summer to a lot of smaller regional get-togethers. Sherry and Elizabeth get to have all these people ohhing-and-aahing over them and Rodney can spend a month getting sh!tfaced with all the forums members. How could that be bad? :What the

I think race suggested that the people in the area will host the mini-get-togethers while rodney, sherry and elizabeth relax in canada. Its a good idea, but it won't really work I think. It won't be the same :(

I have to agree it won't be the same. I wonder if anyone can get sponsored prizes ... hmm, I wonder who'd be willing to sponsor a user event.

Anyway, if its possible, I am sure it will happen.

Prizes? Is that what you guys think a get together is for? I always though it was all about getting some face time with the people we discuss things online with.

I am sure that if someone decided to get a large LAN together it could be sold a hardware company like Asus, ATI or nVidia into sponsoring it with some prizes. They do this kind of thing all the time as promotions. All you have to do is get the plans for one set up and start emailing the advertising/marketing departments of those companies.

I doubt you would be able to convince any of Rodney's sponsors to go in for a simple social function though. You would have to be acting as 3GM's official representative/agent. That requires Rodney's backing and support - can't see that happening.

Well I was thinking the gathering of 3GM members, not a lan party. But ya, part of the get together's was the stuff, it was funny, seeing things get knocked over, when t-shirts were thrown, the sponsored prizes added alot to the whole event, not that its needed, but i am thinking, for a user to reproduce the who get together thing, it would be difficult.

I was just thinking, but anyway, lets not make a big deal out of the comment. The only reason I even brought it up was because if there was a user get together, I would try to get a nice sponsored prize and t-shirts, if I was attending the event and to see if anyone else could do the same.

I didnt mean for Rodney and his family to do that lol I mean for the mini lan parties idea and then we could all hook up to the same like servers and play online with everyone and chat and meet the ones that are local and get to know them, thats all lol.

Why not have this little convention in the silicon vally? After all its where all the technology is! well...maybe not, got celebrities here! lol too bad i didn't join this forum 5 years ago because i was going to college in rochestor, ny which i made frequent trips to toronto and quebec city for fun! anyway... i might make it if the get together is in the midwest as someone suggest... cool to meet fellow geekers lol. Although I am hard of hearing it might be a tad difficult to communicate but that's what computers are for!

I wouldn't expect Rodney to ever host something like that again.

If a member's social get-together were to happen it would have to be hosted & arranged by the members of each region.

OooooH!

Did someone say thread ressurection?

I should crawl out from under my pile of diapers and Treehouse children's programming...:spin

The only time these days to dust off and crack open the computer is when everyone else is fast asleep.

The "little one" has turned into "little ones"!

One three year old, who thinks she is 20 and ready to do it all herself. The following smilie accurately portrays what my toddler looks like if she can't cook her own pancakes...

:tantrum

LoL!

And, one 5 month old, who can already rock himself in his mini rocker/bouncer seat, and thinks it's funny when he blasts one doozie outside of his nappy drawers.

Oh, btw...Huggies stock is up. Buy now :rofl2

j/k

awwwhhh, a little girl and boy, nice balance, although I feel sorry for the boy having an older sister, I see some scary years of dress up and makeup practice in his future.... lol

So ya between those two I can certainly understand how busy you must be.

Im glad that they are doing well and are healthy and apparently get plenty of fiber =p
