The next-door neighbour of missing Ontario woman Alicia Ross will appear in court today -- two days after he surrendered to police.

Daniel Sylvester, 31, faces charges of second degree murder.

Just hours after Sylvester, of Markham, turned himself in on Tuesday night, York Regional Police said they found the remains of a woman they believe is 25-year-old Alicia Ross.

Police Insp. Tom Carrique told reporters Wednesday that the remains were recovered northeast of Markham, a Toronto suburb, although he offered no details, saying the matter is now before the courts.

But Ontario's chief coroner Barry McLellan confirmed the remains were found near Manilla, a town about 50 kilometres northeast of Markham, and near the town of Cobonk, another 40 kilometres north.

Further tests will be required to positively identify the remains.

Sylvester made a brief court appearance in nearby Newmarket Wednesday where he was remanded into custody and ordered to appear again Thursday for a bail hearing.

However, Sylvester's lawyer told reporters that police had no evidence to support a conviction at the time of his surrender.

"His conscience got the better of him,'' David Hobson said. "And he's prepared to let the law take its course."

Police tape now surrounds the Sylvester home, as forensic teams scour the property for evidence.

Ross, 25, vanished from her suburban Toronto home just past midnight Aug. 17 without a trace. She was last seen by her boyfriend, Sean Hine, in the backyard of the Markham home she shared with her parents.

Hine reported Ross missing the following morning after she failed to show up for work. Her car was still in her driveway and her purse and car keys were in the house.

Police never considered Hine a suspect in the case. His roommate told CTV Toronto Wednesday that Hine has suffered through a "terrible ordeal" as a result of the police investigation...
