I'm looking for a good police scanner, but there are so many, anyone know any good ones?

I had a couple Uniden ones back about twelve years ago or so, and they still work today.

You need to check and see whether or not your police use a trunked system. There are two different kinds of scanners, one for trunked and the other for non-trunked systems and they are not interchangable.
Uniden/Bearcat scanners are good for portable scanners. I've got one myself. Radio Shack sold some great desktop scanners.
An excellent magazine for scanner buffs: http://www.monitoringtimes.com/

But the best reference might be to PM bejohnson. :thumb

Uniden/Bearcat is what I would look for. They might be a bit more expensive but the performance is worth it.
Egarrard made a very valid point. Make sure that the scanner you buy will work with the system you wish to listen to. Besides normal FM transmission there are at least three different trunking system types out there. The top of the line scanners will handle all modes of operation but they will cost more.

How do I find out what type they use?

How do I know if the scanner can do both?

research, mind you a good scanner will cost you $$$.
I'm not much into helping out more than what is in this thread with this topic. Why do you want to listen in on the police? :shifty
