29 giveaways. Whoa! I mean, think of how many months/years have passed. Try to remember them all. I'll have to go remember the first one I took part in. Also, remember the one where you had to guess the T-shirt? That was crazy! There was another guessing one too I thought.

Let's make this thread as popular as the #27 one!

Where is "sequoias"....

Geez, I can not live/go to a place without a computer. I mean...hey...this is why I lugged my 8 pound labtop in my backpack for most of my trip in Japan....and keep in mind we walked and went to different places over 4-8 hours at a time.

I even lugged my labtop to Las Vegas....at lease I left it in the hotel that time while we went to do our stuff.

...so in otherwords, I have a lot of memories of this labtop...I'm sure it traveled with me more then a few thousands of miles from the plane ride to walking/going all over the place in Japan. I'm suprised it hasn't die on me from all the rough handling...

Even in Japan I still my normal stuff on the forums...... X_X...

Anyhow, Have a fun time...chillax!

Saturn2888

lol. Yeah, maybe. I dunno. You'd have to hear them. I don't care what they say on the specs. It's all about the cone on the inside and how everything's connected. Really doesn't matter actually what it can support. The speakers on my PC are designed with having 2 or 3 per channel and they're supposed to just kill ANYTHING out there, but they're just normal bookshelf speakers (well, they're about 15-20 lbs each).

Saturn2888

Yeah, that's something I like to see. Even better than the 50 posts of yore because we need more people on the site. 50 is too large of a task. I think 10 would attract more people to actually stick w/ the site and not like in the grand opening where they just came and left.

I think 10 posts is alright, especially for a new user like me. :) It does get people to register but doesn't cause too much spam.

Next time it could be 5 new posts or something, just to keep the ball rolling. :)

Not that I expect to win, I'm sure I'll forget a step, as usual. :beer

I've been looking into those headphones for a bit now. I'm kind of sick using my iPod earbuds and my Phillips behind-the-head things kinda suck. Those would be awesome for my iPod and any late night gaming that I might partake in...CSS in my head, here I come. :thumb

Aren't the iPod ones really really good?
Not really. They're just cheap-o's they add with the package so you can actually listen to the music if you're the 0.0001% in the world without a pair of headphones...lol. Let's just say, the difference between iPod headphones and those UltimateEars phones is like night and day...or rather, listening to music after a flashbang went off and listening to music in a padded room. :Wink

Saturn2888
07-11-2006, 04:11 PM
I could've sworn back when the iPod first came out in 5, 10, and 15 GB, it had AMAZing headphones that weren't included, but you could buy them separately.

Saturn2888

Oh yeah, that'd kinda be a problem if they weren't considering most, if not all, of us are gamers.

Silent_Death911
07-12-2006, 10:41 AM
Sure they will. They're made the reveal all of the sounds in a game. If you use onboard sound, though, it'll be a waste of money. If you have a decent ($100+) sound card, you'll notice a difference.

Saturn2888
07-12-2006, 10:45 AM
I see I see. Well that makes sense. Integrated sound now-a-days isn't too bad. I mean, I know DFI had some good stuff on it. Plus, the Via Envy chipset isn't more than $10 (the chip itself), and it's on par w/ X-Fi.

I think I got my 10 posts now?? ;-p

This contest is there at the right moment, just when I thought about buying $300 headphones to be able to listen to something during summer. (Neighboor's A/C, my 16" fan is a jet, my amp dissipates about 200w of heat - so I got no audio on my PC) Also, I told I was going to get $300 headphones because I can't use something cheaper - sounds too bad for me... These are rated 5/5!

(OK, I'll stop) ;)

Saturn2888
07-26-2006, 11:02 AM
That is, considering you win, which is a pretty high chance at 3GM I'd say. For this one, VERY high chance. I see 55 votes. That means that out of the 55 votes, probably 48-49 people entered the contest, maybe even less. So think of it this way 1/50 is you and 1/50 is me. I've won two contests already, and I doubt I'd win this one just because it was 2 months ago I just won. I mean, I might even opt to giveaway the headphones to another forum member who wants them really bad bc it's not like I need them since I have yet to buy an MP3 player (but $300...), but see, if your case, you need them, and you entered, that's a good thing. Also, you've joined up w/ the forums and seem to be using them fairly regularly. If another forum member is like me, they may opt to give it away as well. There's only one time I remember hearing about that and it was w/ a 9600 Pro I believe. A 9600 Pro that waslazy about being sent out.

So I would say your chances are 1/40 whereas mine are 1/60 (if that's even possible). I would like to go further into my statistical analysis here though. Think of flipping a coin. 2 sides so 50% chance right? Wrong. If you flip heads 8 times, you're probably guessing the next one is tails right? I mean, duh! While mathematically, it's always a 50% chance, logically, you know that if you keep flipping that coin, your chance of getting tails is actually growing. It has to. There's no way you're gonna flip heads 500 times, it just won't happen EVER! While there is a mathemetical chance, it'll never happen. So in this contest, what I trying to say is that you have a much greater chance than I do just because of that. It's just not logically sound to assume I have high chances of winning you know? It's just fun to participate and winning the prizes is always very fun and useful. The RAM I won before is the RAM currently in my PC it isn't a bottleneck for my PC like my old RAM. What do you think?

DragonMaster

That is, considering you win,

This is something I should consider ;-) (Joking, I know I'm not alone in this contest)

Saturn2888
07-26-2006, 11:29 AM
Yeah, that'd be neat. I've never had expensive headphones and I doubt I will unless I get them (via a giveaway) and then that would spark me to buy an MP3 player of some kind, lol! Like, the PSU I won Jan '05 was enough for make me save up for 8 months to upgrade to my current rig. I guess that's just how it is.

16 sucked man. You don't understand. It was horrible. For those of you thinking it's when you get your car... I started driving legally at age 14 and didn't get my car till 1/2 way through being 18 because of issues w/ my dad needing a gas efficient car. 16 was also close to after 9/11. My parents, being from the middle-east, both got laid off when I was 16 and so they were jobless for a long time. Also, I was never liked by more than 4 people in school after 3rd grade and so, 16 was me against 1800 people and that's not 9-12, that's 10-12 grades. Good luck w/ that dude...

Hmm I am 20 and doing pretty darn well. I'm in the military and yeah we don't make too much, but it really isn't that bad. Most people go out and get in debt. I have a 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse that is paid off and I have zero debt. I pay car insurance, cable internet, and cell phone bills. I've got about $15,000 saved. I have a retirement plan going as well. People at work always say stuff to me about it. Your cheap! What are you going to do with all that money? I just laugh. I get what I want...but I know what not to waste my money on. Being smart and not stupid when you are 18-25 is what makes things much smoother. I would go back to being 18 any day. I don't drink and don't have the passion to...so there is no reason I want to get older, but that is the way things roll so just gotta go with it. :)

Okay, I have to agree on that. I have had people post 1 sentence in a thread and it was like, boom, and they're gone. It was on topic, but we had like 5 pages of discussion about that sentence already you know? Also, even if we have to have a checkpoint where we start repeating stuff a bit, it's always good to keep talking on the threads you posted in... Yeah, I understand you dude!

That's actually a good idea. What about that? A checkpoint system where if a thread is too long, we can agree on a checkpoint that basically sums up what was said! How would that sound? We'd have to run it by Rod to make it offical, but I'm pretty sure we could pull that off ourselves. That'll make 3GM forums something very unique and very accessible to others. *cough* I meant to say, even MORE unique. lol!

The AKG K270 I was talking about? There are two drivers per side, at about 1" distance from your ears->comfy, big insulation->someone's talking?, only 270g->got headphones on my head?, etc. I don't have them anymore (I had to change the plug, the old one was broken) but could ask the guy if I could borrow them again!

No, you are not alone. Which is why I don't roll with the flash memory players: I try to keep my music as uncompressed as possible. I could care less if the song eats 100MB, I just want to hear it the way it was intended.

Yay! Someone else!

I'd get a portable player if
-I would have good headphones
-It would support OGG and FLAC
-It would have good DAC and output stage (Even with uncompressed audio, a cheap Sony CDP just isn't good enough)
-It would have long battery life
-It would not cost over $200
-It would last at least 10 years and have a good charger (Hell, with that, even NiCds can last 15 years and run almost as their as-new capacity) as well as replacable, easy to find, cheap batteries

Hey, I could get what I want with a portable Nakamichi cassette deck... except size is an issue. These decks are amazing -> High-end models are as good as reel to reel decks(Even better than a lot of them - BTW, reel to reel is what is often used as a master for music even today)

Oops! Getting OT...

As for your X-Fi, it may as well be one-bit sound because junk in is still junk out. MP3 is decent, but in the real scheme of things it is junkfood for your ears.

You know what, almost every DACs today convert 16-bit or 24-bit to 1-bit. Invention of Sony... That's why real 16-bit DACs are highly acclaimed by people (Even if they don't know that's the reason) for their sound.

Poor guy, has to manage all of this around a newborn?
Plus to find a new server, keep 3GM working, thanks Rodney for your hard work!

OT, but last week on Jeopardy there was a question in the Acronym catagory: DAC. Everyone stared blankly as Alex told them Digital Analog Converter.

Poor consumers, too dumb for their own good. :grumble

I would have liked to see this. What about D/F, codec, DSP or ADC?

People should learn at least a minimum knowledge of electronics -- Maybe we'll see less low quality products on big box store shelves,..

Well... I've spent the better part of my day doing that small review of the earphones. Almost burned up my front panel trying to plug it in to the Audigy that I don't think works like that anymore...cough.

Then I plugged the front panel headset to the onboard sound. Come to find out that Cooler Master must have there heads on backwards because the heatset and mic are reverse. I'm looking at it right now and I see a pink connector over the headset letters and green over the mic...sigh.

There is also a ground problem with the onboard AC97 because I can hear noise when I move the mouse around. I wanted to do this to avoid reaching around the whole computer to plug in the phones to the card. Like it is now I can't use them with the computer very well and I need a new MP3 player because it's dead.

These earphones with an MP3 player would be KICKASS! It's funny how my Hiper PSU win was more fun for me because I got to build something with my computer. All the stress of almost buring up my case has given me the blues... The cooler master cent 5 was also cool because I got away from that nasty Antec SooNot-Again case.

I think I'll take these to work and see if the cable is long enough to reach the back of the computers. I guess that could be one more neg is the short cable, but in truth it is long enough for any Ipod or other MP3 player. Don't mind me, I just want to enjoy my new toy a little more. TIME TO WIN AN MP3 PLAYER!!

It was nice of Rodney and UE to give these sweet earphones away, Thanks! :)

No, there is no problem, it's called an onboard AC'97 codec. The layout was made by a motherboard manufacturer (Cheapest as possible) and every motherboards are like that.

Saturn2888

What was all that about the Audigy front panel? Also, gosh darn, why did they mix up the colors? Better yet, HOW?

Tivon
08-09-2006, 05:06 PM
I was looking for the pinouts for the Audigy to plug my front panel speakers wires into. Turns out... you can't do that. Might have sent 5Volts to the panel and could have killed it because I smelled it burning but was fast to turn things off. The outpart of the CoolerMaster has a mis label with the Mic and Headset reversed.

I've used AC97 before without those noise problems? I did get the board as a OEM Return however and that could be why I got it for so cheap?

Saturn2888
08-09-2006, 05:09 PM
Yeah dude! We had like 2 forum discussions on it too. Really sucks. Stupid Creative (LEARN THE STANDARDS!). I keep getting Microsoft vibes from Creative.

Do you mean a refurb board? Well RMA it I guess or call them up. AC97's not supposed to have that noise. Maybe the headphones are so good that you can actually hear the noise from moving the mouse? loL!

DragonMaster
08-09-2006, 07:31 PM
I'm just realizing it's better for me not to have won these headphones, I always put them too loud.

It's hard during the first days, but if you don't use a computer for long, when you're back home you can't stand more than 15 minutes in front of your computer.

Yeah, or like the internet or e-mails. Like, the big reason I like to use my PC besides NeoGeo stuff (easier than using the carts) is for e-mail, anime, music, and 3GM. Games are... I finally figured out how to use Oblivion again (corrupt save stopped me), but my PC is kinda... check another thread I posted.

The thing is that I can't play a game for more than 15 minutes withouth getting bored. I bought a few Genesis and SNES games this summer, but found I'm not playing them. (Forget about Xbox(360), PS2, and NGC, a minute is enough)

When my computer has a problem I stay on it for long, but when I can't find what it is, I get frustrated...

I thought about starting to play PC games once, but when I see that a graphic card that can run with a new game flawlessly will cost as much as the rest of my computer, I wonder if I should really.

Saturn2888
08-10-2006, 02:00 PM
Well I dunno. I hate playing games by myself. One of the few non-RPGs I played for a long long time by myself was F-Zero GX because the game really was great. It highly overshadowed its predecesors, had a strict arcade feel, and had a few enticing story behind all of the characters.

Well what I meant by that is that, I hate playing alone, and maybe that's your problem. I don't play much by myself which is why I stopped playing videogames during 2nd semester of college when my friend I was playing w/ got busy and why when I got back home I didn't play bc my best friend is in CA now. Think about playing Age of Empires III. I waiting so long for that game, obsessed about it, was the first person ever to pre-order the thing, and I played it maybe 6 times. It was all because the friend I played AoEIII w/ moved to CA. No more LAN gaming = no more playing. It's just the way it is I guess. Devs. don't seem to understand the novelty of multiplayer SINGLE player games (co-op). They think multiplayer should be competitive... Well that's good for all those guys that don't have friends and sit in their little corner at home, but I can clearly remember Perfect Dark for the N64 being one of my favorite FPSs because it was co-op. For that very reason it made the game better. Even poor storylines like Shadowgrounds for PC is completely overlooked and even humorous when there are others in the room which really make the game worth playing. Teamwork is a factor that makes the million WWII games rule, but people that play those don't seem to like teamwork which is why Battlefield 2 integrated that system where you have a main commander and a squad leader. It was great. Almost forced people into teams because if you didn't, well, you had a good chance of dying. I remember alwasy having a skilled chopper pilot or driving around someone would knew how to kill people while I was in a jeep. Still, it's nothing w/o others there that you know. That's what stopped me from playing Unreal Tournament 2004.

So while this is all offtopic. Video/computer games should really start working more towards interaction and such. I mean, the X360 controllers work on PC, a lot of people have gamepads and even some (like me) arcade controllers or PS2 to PC adaters for DDR or just general play. Once companies realize that, they could have a product that really appeals to us gamers who are starting to get bored with the same 100,000 FPS games that are released (minus Metroid Prime).

BAM! One time fix posted here for AC97 Onboard sound noise!

Turn up your speakers so it's really easy to here the interference.
Open up the volume control-->Options-->properties, then tick ALL of the drivers so that when you click ok theyt show up in the volume control mixer. Then mute all the devices (except wave and the master volume) and see if muting a specific device get rid of the interference!! Worked for me! Except mine was the line-in so god knows what I'm going to do if i ever need to use it!!!

(AC97 on board sound)
For me it was the AUX playback. Muted it... silenced my problem on my ASUS with integrated sound.

Enjoy! :)

Creative has the pinout of the front panel connector on their website. (Yes, it's true!)

Pandora doesn't sound all that great, if you want some really good sound, use kX drivers, go in the DSP window to get Wave Out directly to the front outputs, enable swap front/rear and plug your headphones in the rear outputs. Then, get foobar2k and the Kernel Streaming plugin, set the output to Kernel streaming, set output to either 16 or 24 bit, depends of your card, in Foobar's DSP set resampler to 96k high quality and add CDs to your playlist. I tried it this weekend and it sounds really great. Kernel Streaming bypasses the Wave volume control.

Tivon
08-12-2006, 06:33 PM
I'll need to check those out... Why is that better than pandora?

DragonMaster
08-12-2006, 06:52 PM
Because Pandora streams compressed audio, and with good headphones, there's more difference between compressed and non-compressed audio.

Tivon
08-12-2006, 06:55 PM
Well... I'm using Pandora for it's easy streaming... and free music. Does this other program do the same thing? Looks like a audio plugin / player and that is only good if I already have the music. No room for MP3's or CD's at work.

DragonMaster

Foobar2000 is just a music player like Winamp, but better sounding. But since you use them at work, better stick with Pandora, online radios are often worse.

Hmm.. dragged FXbus 0 and 1 over to the Epilog analog front left and right outputs... Not sure if that did anything though? Could not hear anything at first without doing the swap front/rear.

DragonMaster
08-20-2006, 08:07 AM
Swap front rear is normally enabled per default, and is used to get the fronts to the better-sounding rear output, so when it's enabled, you plug the fronts in the rear plug.

Yeah, there are a lot of modules, but if you only use Wave or Midi, you can just keep FXBus and epilog. If you use games, you might want to keep Surrounder+ to send the 5.1 to your headphones, or something like that. There are some EAX modules, but I wonder if games really can configure these to work properly...

Tivon

I see what you are saying.. I've made a few profiles to switch from headphone and games on the system speakers.

I also see that this does something with AC97?
