For some reason I don't think I'll ever win on 3GM... But I want to keep trying. :) That's half the fun right? :)

Congrats to Rod for the great contests and to the AlphaShield guys who are obviously smart enough to know this is a brilliant marketing strategy. Especially if I win. :)

actually, i was so bloody fed up of the latest version of ZA Pro (6.5.x) cuz it kept crashing that I switched to a prior version 6.1, then this contest came up and i thought why not give a hardware f/w a shot :KICKASS

Software or hardware firewall IMO would be like asking software or hardware sound? Video? A firewall is a program more running in the background!

Saturn2888

Well I don't use one period. They're worthless. My router provides a sufficient ultra stealth thingy if I'm not DMZ host.

DragonMaster

My router provides a sufficient ultra stealth thingy if I'm not DMZ host.

I forgot about that firewall ;) (Router)

But it can be useful for some unsafe routers (Older ones that aren't upgraded, unsolved problems like with D-Link, etc.)

Saturn2888
08-04-2006, 01:42 PM
What about D-Link? I have the VPN one so it'd be good to know what's up w/ the Firewall.

DragonMaster
08-04-2006, 03:35 PM
I don't know if it's also a firewall problem, but there's a problem with all their router models I read, especially if unsecured, people can type an address and read all the GUI's config like a .ini file, and they even get your password and wireless encryption key. There IS a problem, but I don't really remember what it is. (I read the DSLreports topic on it, and people talk about one problem, D-Link support about an other, etc. It's all messed up.)

Saturn2888
08-04-2006, 04:28 PM
Well mine's the VPN one, I hope it's fine. Also, my wireless is done by Belkin so I'm fine there then.

DragonMaster
08-04-2006, 05:51 PM
Well mine's the VPN one, I hope it's fine. Also, my wireless is done by Belkin so I'm fine there then.

I don't think the VPN models are really safer. One or two models had the easy-to-see settings problem, but others got an other problem, which wasn't revealed IIRC. If you can access your router's config thru your Belkin wireless, then it could cause problems, but I'm not really sure of the problem. I know there's one with all their routers tho.

I just Googled about the problem, and it's on the LAN side, so this firewall shouldn't be necessary for every D-Links.

All you have to do is to disable evil UPnP (Like Steve Gibson from grc.com is calling it).

LOL! Security Now! I'm here w/ Steve Gibson, now refered to as the security guru. Yeah, I listened to #51 today. It's almost as memorized as "Hello again, I'm Rodney Renalds and welcome to another Video Review" It's not good unless you do the head-nod too. I dunno if Rod still does it, but it's always cool bc you can tell he's happy he didn't mess up when he was saying the intro. At least I think so.

this is something i would SERIOUSLY use daily , ive been wanting to get a hardware firewall for some time and this beauty looks llike the deluxe model with heardware and software build in.

I don't understand. I still have time to enter, but I don't understand.

An hardware firewall has a processor dedicated to the task, while a software one uses your CPU. Games often use ~100% so it could slow down the firewall (Or and tasks could slow it down)

There's a reason why hardware sound, graphics, network, DMA are better. But about this firewall, I don't know if we're talking about a recent computer because it seems like a more complete solution than a software. (Which could be worth it for this reason also, depends of what you're looking)

Saturn2888

Lol, a lot of people wanted it. I think 2-3 people need it who are actually new to the forums. Wasn't Drizzt one of them? I dunno, I love the giveaway threads bc they go waaaay off topic that's why I'll even post that I'm not entering. This is probably the best giveaway for new people to the site bc well... a bunch of us aren't entering. Only 25 votes. That means either Kindom or you Tivon didn't vote since there should be 3 of us saying "Forget it."

I think this'll be the easiest giveaway to win bc there are such high chances of winning.

If my brother wouldn't download torrents and game demos so much, we would stop getting viruses on the main computer. (Before he knew anything about BitTorrent, the Anti-Virus and Anti-spyware never EVER found anything on that computer(Except tracking cookies).

A few years ago, if you knew what you were doing, you could browse the Internet w/o any firewall, anti-virus or anything. You just had to kill things like NetBIOS, use Netscape Navigator and you were fine.

I can still do that! Just browse sites you know. If it's a bad site, use a school computer :P Really though, I've never had any BT problems, but I'm not doing anything bad w/ it so that's probably why.

Yep. I only visit Newegg.com, 3DGameman ,and my guild forums on a typical day so I'm usually not going into foreign ground and such. No wonder I've been going so long before without anti-virus and such. Of course, once you start doing google search for pictures (i.e animewall paper), you get wacked with all kinds of crud.

Using a school computer? I don't know : No burner, no USB & Win95.

SAMSAMHA

Saturn2888
08-30-2006, 01:41 PM
Using a school computer? I don't know : No burner, no USB & Win95.

Well that sucks. All of the ones I've used in the last 4 years are WinXP w/ tons of USB and they're very fast, they're just usually slowed down by network overhead.

Yeah, Kingdom and I (I'm going back to saying Kingdom) both go where we know. I find few reasons to go to new sites, and if I do, I can always make sure ahead of time if they're good or bad. Google has this new feature which helps out by saying which sites are known to be bad. It's done by a team of researchers at various universities, and I know of no money that's been passed under-the-table as of yet so it's a good thing so far.

Hey Kingdom, see if Tivon or Rod could fix that for you :)

One day guys! Kingdom, it's your call this time. Let's see if you can guess who'd get it since you, Tivon, and I aren't goin' for it.

slugbug
08-31-2006, 06:19 PM
I could use this for sure. Only a few hours left til the draw :banana

Maniacmous
08-31-2006, 07:00 PM
Amen to that, could really use it, if only so I could turn off the integrated firewall in my wireless router at school - my roommates use BT entirely too much, overloads the memory and causes me to reset the router all the time.

Saturn2888
08-31-2006, 07:54 PM
Ha ha ha! That sucks. Yeah, to fix that, you're supposed to have it use 10 KBps less than your max upload speed so everything works as it should and nothing overflows since BT uses the upload bandwidth as well. Also, the client they use matters too, but I can't wait to see who wins! This is something that's always fun to watch.

Protocol.

Uh... No tornado. You know what a simile is right? Well that was one right there. He's comparing his room to looking like a tornado passed through. OMG, a simile w/o the use of like or as. That's the second one of those I've encountered.

I've noticed since connecting the Alphashield that my download/upload speeds have dropped :Sigh

Without: Your download speed : 8895 kbps or 1111.8 KB/sec.
Your upload speed : 656 kbps or 82 KB/sec.

With: Your download speed : 6535 kbps or 816.9 KB/sec.
Your upload speed : 567 kbps or 70.8 KB/sec.

I'll call their tech support line when they're open tomorrow to see what can be done to solve this problem.

Wow, thats a massive drop. But worth to pay a little bit of speed for higher security, dont you think? BTW, what do you use for your tester? I haven't found many sites that are correct :(

I use my ISP's speedtest page http://testvitesse.videotron.ca/

I don't like the drop. that's TOO much which is why I don't like Firewalls. But do you mind?

Really? What are you getting?

Yeah, let's not have this become a "post your internet speed" thread.
But yeah, that's faster than mine too. Canada getting good connection?

I'm on Wired 802.11G. Dad's DSL is slower then my Mom's Cable. Dad's DSL has better uploading though.

Yes it's too much of a drop for me. Hopefully Alphashield can help me with this today.

I talked to their tech support and all they could suggest was I rma it. I doubt exchanging it would make a difference though.
The tech said a 10 - 20 % slowdown is normal, but mine is more like 25 % slower :(
I guess that's the price you have to pay to be hack free.

Yeah. RMA it then I guess. It really might be a hardware problem.
