What do you like in really old computers? :)

JesterX

The fact that I can do anything to them and I wouldn't care if it broke. I define really old as 5 years.

What he said....also the fact that there is no real pressure in fixing them either. :Thumb

Yeah, but they are slow and inefficient.
I support DC projects like Folding and Climateprediction, I've donated at least 500 hours of computing time.

I like them to be in decent shape (Case not scratched up) and have all those nice old tags on em (i.e Pentium III). I would like em not too dustly and office kept. I'm looking to see if I can take one of the bunch Pentium III/Celeron 370-PGA socket systems (SFF) from school that we replaced with Pentium D's w/ 17" LCDs.

I do not like to have any of those cartridge Pentium II/Pentium III's though.

I would take anything from the 370-PGA/Socket A (462) era and above. Something in the Socket 7 is a bit icky unless it is a name brand motherboard w/ box. Something with upgradable stuff is nice. I wouldn't take anything below PC100 support though.

Those came from my school. We took apart a bunch of these old IBM machines running Pentium II's, Pentium MMX, and Pentium PRO's last year.

WOW.....Who knows, Maybe out of the bunch there was a Pentium 66. What type of memory are those foil looking contact tips? I'm very interesting in learning the old types of memory. I got a text book about it but I'm too lazy to dig through it.

I don't know when it is going to be, but when I go back to my home country, Hungary, then I will take a picture of a really old computer that my dad used when he was young. Really, I think the mods (Rodney, you listening?) should remove the [img] option. Yes, hosting on the board takes space, but it controls the way images are shown here.

Heck, Rodney, what are your peak bits per second? If I can get a good host running here, maybe I'll just consider supporting the board. God knows I've got no end in space...

I will agree with you on the no fans part (except maybe for one fan). I will disagree on the CPU part though (I will post a picture comparison later on), heatsink part kinda goes with the old computers (well all they had back then was boring square heatsinks), short ram sticks (although the chips were huge!!), and tiny mobos a little. (If you count the expansion slot, then that would be a no XD)

hmm the oldest computer I have in storage is an adams computer the company lasted for 6months, its basicly a digital typewriter, you had a monitor and a desktop system that took cassettes as well as 8 track like cartiges, this was before 5.25 floppy disk, it also had a printer which had most of the brains of the computer in it so without the printer the computer wouldnt work so you needed all the parts including the monitor to work the computer, I had two games I plaid all the time one was like that donkey kong game and the other was this ufo shooting game. Man that thing was old, it outputted two colors light green and black. thats the oldest computer I ever had and the oldest console that I can remember was Atari.

So wait...the computer needed a printer to work? Wow...talk about co-dependency...(Although in today's world, a computer system isn't complete with a printer....)

I wonder if anybody have those big CRT laptops...lol...talk about a laptop. Be funny see somebody pull out a rocket lancher size bag and put that huge rocket lancher size laptop on their lap. I'd hate to try and put that laptop in their backpack and in a taxi....

You know how you can go back to your time frame? Don't sleep one cycle (means for one night) so that when the time comes (supposely) to sleep, you will crash out how a 10 Yr Hard drive does when it reachs it end of life (EOL) :lmao

I took some more picture of some stuff in the schools' workshop. Old stuff I must say. I manage to cut myself a few times with motherboards and heatsinks.

I manage to find a Western Digital Carviar 425.3MB hard drive which I can't seem to get it to show up in Windows XP. I threw it in an external, it shows up the model number (i.e Blah Blah Blah drive has been detected) and then wam, I can't find it... :What the

I'll post some pictures in thumbnail later.

(Side note: I'm quite sure I found a Celeron 1.4GHz Tualatin Socket 370 (PGA370). I doubt we'll going to use it and I might as well ask my teacher it I can keep it for my chip collection, lol).

Thanks for the consideration Kindom! :Thumb You're a champ!

If we kept all the hardware my dad collected over the last 20 years we would not have room to move around in our basement. All of that stuff got tossed a long time ago - around the time we moved out of our house in Ajax, ON a couple years ago. Here's some of the stuff that went:

Hand-built 8080 S100 Bus computer - no keyboard/monitor Ill I/o via toggle switches & a pair of 7-segment LEDs.

Timex-Sinclair 1000 - Mass storage via cassette tape recorder

TI99-4A - No monitor - used the TV. Cassette tape recorder used for data storage. Most software came on ROM cartridges. Special assembly language cartridge needed to do assembly language programming - which he did a lot of back then. Has a speech synthesizer add-on module.

Apple II clone with dual processors - a 6502 for Apple & an 8080 for CP/M. No hard drives (a 5MB HDD cost over $2000 at the time) & used a "green screen" monochrome monitor. had a single 140K 5 1/4 floppy for mass storage & 64K of memory. Also had a speech synthesizer as well as a touch pad input tablet.

Commodore Amiga 1000. The 7th one to come into the Canadian retail market. My dad sat in a waiting list for over 7 months for this. Again, no hard drive, but had dual floppies. This was an odd creature. It's 'BIOS' was on one floppy and the operating system was on a second one. You had to do this two-disk boot to a 'cold boot'. Warm boots required only the second diskette. It had 768K of memory but 256 of it was taken up and locked out by the BIOS & OS. My dad's first "computer mod" was to install a 256 ROM containing the "Kickstart" BIOS which you had to burn in yourself from the loaded kickstart image. After the mod the extra 256 Meg of memory was freed up for program use and you only ever had to use the second boot disk thereafter. This was around the time the IBM PC AT with it's hifalutin i286 processor started coming out.

A 33 Mhz i386 was the first DOS-Based PC based on IBM's architecture. It ran OS/2 and had 64 Meg of memory as well as an ATI VGA Wonder video card.

After that point everything gets fuzzy since he has built and run over 50 PCs over the years from that point on (we have about 10 computers in the house right now... 3 of them all mine!). I am happy to say I was right there beside him as he was building most of them :) I think he still keep a CPU retirement home which is a box containing both chip and Cartridge style CPUs. I know his 386/33 is in there along with a 485, a Pentium 1, a couple AMD Athlon (Pre-XP and 64) chips and a Celeron D 355. I'll see if I can get a picture of this CPU retirement home when I get a chance.

Here is our chip-style CPU retirement home residents.

From top left to right, bottom left to right :

386 33Mhz
486-DX2 66Mhz
Athlon64 3500+ (newcastle), 3500+ (Winchester), Intel Celeron D 355
Pentium 90Mhz
Pentium 3 733Mhz
Size comparison: 386, 486, Pentium, Pentium 3
Athlon Thunderbird 900Mhz (unlocked - hit 1.4Ghz. Not bad for back then)
Athlon Thunderbird 1400Mhz
Athlon Thoroughbred (XP) 1700+ (Ran in a duallie system for years - used to have 2 of them)

These are the chip-type procs only. All the cartridge ones (all Intel cartridges) are in another box in a dark, scary corner of the basement.

In a conversation with Saturn2888, he admited to that at any time he can go to his basement and find random computer equipment. I have a feeling there's some sort of quantum sigularity between Kindom934's house and Saturn's. Quite possibly Kindom has so much stuff at home that it is litterally leaking into Saturn's.

p.s., I'm surprised Drizzt didn't complain about those pic's. :shifty

In Art my teacher has a whole box of old magazines and such...Last week I found an old computer magazine with computer price tags at like $2799!

It's like 64mhz speed!

I'll try and bring it home and scan some pages on to here...

Thanks loads for that Kindom! Genuinely appreciated! :thumb You da man!

I think we has some old Byte mags around here that had articles on the Commodore Vic 20, Apple II/II+/IIe/III and Apple Lisa as well as some of the old 8080 & Z-80 systems that were the business computer of choice back then. If I can find them, I'll take some pics of some of the ads & stuff for you guys but we may have dumped them off at a Goodwill collection center when we moved to our current house a couple years ago..

For todays standard of us, 478 is old but not old school. That mobo came from a system that...not sure why we replaced it. I think my teacher had problems with the audio (I think it's only drivers but it could be onboard issues). I might be able to take it but i got no use for it since i got spare boards.

So I can't just keep "adding" to my previous post.

Here's some scans on my first graphic card I bought, the PNY GeForce FX5600 Ultra 128MB 8XAGP card. :)

*If anybody wants the scan for the ATI Radeon 9800PRO 8XAGP, ATI Radeon X700PRO 8XAGP, ATI Radeon X800PRO 8XAGP, ATI Radeon X800XL 8XAGP, or the ATI Radeon X1900 Master Board box scans, Let me know :P *

*Trying to see where those odd scan lines came from. Hope my scanner isn't dying, lol.

MOAR!! XD
You do know I'm gonna shoot you and take your mobos right? LOL! Naw, this isn't the PS3 launch. So I heard some of that shooting stuff when down in Hawaii too.

I love old things bc they just work well. They seem to be a lot less bloated than the things of today. I remember Win95 working on a 90MHz P5-90 (Pentium) whereas WinXP, even on the same settings, has problems on anything under 350MHz. It seems like you just need more and MORE these days. I also have a feeling there's some kind of conspiracy going around forcing older hardware to go slower with new software. The basis? SP1 for WinXP is a lot faster than SP2. A lot of "newer" programs run a hella lot slower now than they did a few years ago. It's not as if I've fallen into this conspiracy theory myself, but I've learned to watch for such updates. Look at ZoneAlarm, Norton, McAfee. Once, those programs were worthy of installation, now, the program Norton won't even let you uninstall it and it interferes with other programs that you want to run. Ever heard of SpySweeper? Even though you have to purchase the software, it seems as though it's creating the spyware itself... I'll leave that for you guys to think over.

So? That doesn't mean it doesn't suck. I know people who bought it and it destroyed their PC's capability to do simple tasks. We thought it was spyware or Norton, but it was SpySweeper, that and Norton didn't wanna uninstall.

Why the heck was there Norton + SpySweeper. Norton tends to screw up any other anti whatever software if your trying to use. I've had issues getting Norton to uninstall, a real pain in the butt especially when it starts to freak out when there's another Verson already install.

All I can say is that I had used SpySweeper on two machines (with no Norton on) and had no issues. It even picked some stuff up that Ad-Aware didn't scan.

They all pickup stuff the other guys dont. I use a-squared, ad-aware, sbsd, windows defender once every 2 months, and they even treat cookies different, some will determine all advert cookies bad, and some just remove a few advert cookies.

I agree on that part, thats why my high risk computer (anime wallpaper time) I toss in all the anti-what ever. It does slow the system down but I can't be having stuff on my system.

BTW, my FX60 system had a trojan, Saturn. I think I got it when i typed in 3dgameman url wrong one time and the trojan would make my windows invisible XD...
