I've been asked, "What do you think about heading up a blog section on the site?" :hyper
I'm always game for something new, but the real question here falls on the 3GM community at large. What do you all think about adding a blog section on this site? :smokin
Maybe some of our long term members could provide original short written articles. Could be anything from personal experiences to short reviews on products. :camera
I need to hear your thoughts on this. :Thumb
BLOG (WEBLOG): A blog is your easy-to-use web site, where you can quickly post thoughts, interact with people, and more.

I had to look up BLOG. Sad I know... Makes perfect since now, just wanted to help give people a clue first. I can't be the only person asking that question? :shifty
I don't think Rodney has the time to Blog. That would be more our thing. We could chat about the hardware or some other issues.

Well, chating about hardware.. Hmmm.. That sounds A LOT like 3DGameMan Forums :Holy Crap
The point of a blog is for a single person to talk about their life or a certain topic (e.g. Saturn's DDR website is based on blog software. He uses the blog to post news to inform users)... Since 3GM has a website, news system, full CMS may I add, and forums.. a blog would only be needed if a staff member wants to post about their life. However, that can easily be done via forum threads.

Yep, a blog within 3GM. Tech articles, personal computer experiences, personal reviews, anything tech related really. Maybe also get some of you regulars involved in this as well :Thumb
Hope to have it up this month or next. At least this is the plan!

Some good points here. I think that there is more meaning behind the question... this is my take at the question: Would you like to see home grown editorial content about current news, products, events, etc... Not just linking to stories, but actually creating content ourselves...

So 3GM will turn into a "myspace" style blog your saying? And every user will have their own blog to post stuff?
Or I am just not understand what your saying.

No, not every user, maybe a select few.

Alright then :Thumb I understand now.
Now heres my opinion on it:
Pointless imho. 3GM has a forums where users can post these sorts of articles.

I think the term 'blog' is a bit out of context, but it could be something like an 'editorial blog'...? Consisting of users we feel that are capable and willing to write informative, interesting and entertaining content with a focus on gaming, technology and other related fields.

Yup, I agree that "blog" is not the correct word for this. Thats why I originally asked what would be on the blog (i.e. Rodney's life).
Well, you can create a section on the site. Then create accounts for people in the CMS and give them rights to only post in that section. No need to install fancy blog software for it.

Well the technical side is not hard :D The question is more of, would you the user's like to see this happen...

Yup, I suggest updating the first post and explaining what the "blog" would be used for and by whom so people can make an educated vote :Thumb

I think the idea of a blog would be nice, more to supplement the reviews.
One thing I do like about IPB is they have IP Blog, which allows every user in the Forums to have a blog. That would be kind of cool.

I am sure vB has a similar addon/mod. The real problem with that though is moderating all of those blogs and making sure they arent being misused.

Its a neat idea but I doubt I would use it as it is, its hard enough to keep up with the forums let alone checking out peoples blogs so I could go either way with this not only that we have the forums, people post reviews now, people post what they think so I guess the only diff would be we would be able to organize peoples stuff by name versus looking through the forums, but again I dont think I would have time to check all that out.

k, so user blogs are not what we are looking for... would organic content interest you the users?

*cough* Updated HBD logs *cough*
What interests me is video reviews :) Very fun to watch, especially the bloopers were Rodney says random things :rofl2
Maybe you guys could get one or two users to write news articles for the website. Sort of like what Bit-Tech has. On their front page are a few news articles and a discussion thread about 'em in the forums.

Maybe blogs wouldnt be the answer then, maybe just having users contribute high quality reviews that are posted on the main site.

Isn't that what I just said Oo'' But yea, I agree. Blogs aren't what is needed, at least not for this application.

If it's not a blog then what is it?
Maybe we can think of a new term for our 3GM weblogs?
robodude666

Its called "news articles" or just "articles" :P

Rodney did mention that blogging here would be available only to a "select few". Perhaps the blog feature is being envisioned as a Contributing Member added bonus?
If I were writing articles I would much prefer to be paid for them rather than have to pay somebody else to publish them on their site. To me that is how I envision freelance writers making a living with their hard work...

By a "select few" I did not mean Contributing Members. Myself, Zach and Tivon will add our own original content. Any other member that we think might be qualified and interested may be called upon.
So I take it you are not interested ;) j/k

I believe the correct terminology is editorial -"an article in a newspaper or other periodical presenting the opinion of the publisher, editor, or editors." ~dictionary.com (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/editorial)

I think it could have a place. It is always worth a shot, if it doesn't work out, then no loss. If it is a success, then that is a positive. We won't know unless we give it a shot.

I think it sounds like a great idea and, it would be along the same lines as my recommendation to give your project a "my space". Instead of hacking up the forum with a closed thread like your "hour before dawn project" that only you can post to, and having people post to a seperate thread. You'd be able to keep the content of your project seperate from the user comments. I guess the neat thing is that you could associate yourself as a journalist for 3dgameman but I'm thinking that would tend to assoicate some pretty tricky complications for Rodney.
My only concern is who's gonna participate to make this worth whlie. I barely think of a handful of people who has the eptitude, let alone the dedication for it to catch on. It is a cool idea and if it's done I hope it works out.
