It is 7:30 AM .. I haven't been to bed yet, I just got back to my dorm about an hour ago after driving back from the g/f's place in Raleigh. Anyways... I am watching QVC...

Acer Computer
17'' Acer Monitor
Wireless Mouse & Keyboard
Canon Printer
Netgear Router
Software ($1500 worth!!)

Package Price $1199.99 (bunch o' easy payments too!)

Retail Value $3199.99

Lol...

This just made me laugh because they kept talking about how nice it was going to be to have the computer to take out of the house them when you come home set it on the desk as a normal desktop. All I kept thinking were what are the specs on this computer??

Here goes...

Celeron 410
512 MB DDR Ram
CD-RW/DVD-Rom
Wireless
15'' Inch BRIGHTVIEW (Lol)
40 GB Harddrive

17'' BRIGHTVIEW (They kept saying that over and over)
16 MS Response Time
400:1 Contrast Ratio
140*x150* Viewing Angle
VGA (No DVI) Input

Standard Top Loading Printer

$1500 worth of useless software... seriously, useless.. I can't remember all the crap they spewed out, but it wasn't anything anyone would need with that beauty Celeron they are buying....

Anyways here is my breakdown on that price:

Laptop - $399.99
Monitor - $149.99
Printer - $49.99
Mouse/Keyboard - $49.99
Router - $49.99
Software - $100 (Just for kicks)

Rounded total = $800

That is $400 cheaper... lol...

What kills me, is that I bought my Toshiba on sale for $499.99 from Best Buy. It was a Centrino Solo 512 MB of Ram (I added another 512) with a 60 GB Harddrive.

I just had to vent this and see what y'all would say. Cause I kept cracking up and was almost in shock that people are calling to order this stuff. It almost makes me feel sad how they are just robbing people blind. Too funny. Anyways I'm tired.

most people would think thats a deal since all they know of is CompUSA when it comes down to computers.

Of course, not everybody knows that CompUSA is a bit expensive and you can find alternative places like NewEgg and save your wallet :P

Gotta remember, laptops and desktops are two different worlds.

CompUSA is slowly going out of business, mainly because of their on commission sales. If you look at the revenue for computers, it is extremely high, but when it comes down to margin, it just does not exist.

For a laptop surprisingly the best deals really are the Retail Stores (i.e. Best Buy, Circuit City, even Dell). Mainly because the price points have dropped so much and the whole mail-in-rebates disappearing.

Good example was that this summer Best Buy had a Celeron laptop that was retail of $629.99. It was on sale all the time, ranging from $399.99 - $499.99 depending on the week. As a result of instant rebates, they are taking a loss. It is just in recent times, the whole computer market has changed.

I just really feel bad for the people who are willing to just order a computer off the television. Then complain how bad of a brand they had... Just frustrates me. I find most computer problems people have are well not the computer but the user.

Yea, It seems like Laptops are the whole 'thing' now. Since most people don't even play games, a desktop isn't even needed and with most laptops coming with GMA900 level graphics, they go in the $500~$800 price range. A Majoridty of people mostly use computers for just personal Internet stuff and all the high end stuff such as higher end graphics and bigger storages goes to waste (< Unless they download a lot of MPEG stuff). Laptops has really gotten affordible over the last few years from what I've seen.

I definably feel for you about that part. Most of the computer 'issues' people have are on the user end. When they start having slow down issues with the computer, they start saying 'XXX brand sucks, it's so slow' when they have half-a-million Trojans and spy ware in the system and they go install some 50 dozen internet toolbars on their browsers. It's not because the computer was under the eMachine brand or HP, it's because of all those junk IN it! (< Although some prebuilds do come with alot of 'junk')

I'm the kind of person who likes to know how everyday things work, so that way if something goes wrong, I can be self efficient and repair it when it comes down to hardware.

I sometimes think how I take my computer trouble shooting skills for granted, thinking that I could have had something that I'm stronger in (i.e Math), however, I really start thinking about it when I keep hearing 'I couldn't finish it today, my printer was acting stupid on me and the repair guy is coming this week Wednesday to our house' excuse, I realizes that almost everybody in my class don't know more then the 'On' button for a computer.

Phew, lucky I know how to fix those problems! :sweat

I doubt CompUSA is ever going out of business.

Reason? My school tech teacher can only buy computer hardware from 'certified' dealers using school money, one being CompUSA. I asked him why we can't buy from Newegg and he told me that.

Sucks, eh?

Our CompUSA had a going out of business sale just a few months ago. Everything was 50% or more off. They aren't very internet based so that is all the info I had on them.

ah well on the West Coast, CompUSA is doing fine they did close down dead areas so that they can focus on areas that will bring them in money but thats not uncommon, in my area Toys R Us had a going out of business sale but did that mean ALL of Toys R Us was going out lol nope just our area because no one shopped there.

O_O....

50% off...thats pretty good for most stuff.

Since CompUSA is the only real big computer hardware store on this island, they have no competition in a way unless you consider on-line, although for me shipping is starting from $20~$30 for most stuf.

The only time when I buy from CompUSA stuff (computer hardware), is when there is sales (only time when it comes at the same price of newegg w/o shipping) or when I need to buy something small.

Well, either that or they are downsizing big time. They've closed at least 2, if not 3 stores in my area.

Edit: And I live in the Silicon Valley, so this isn't like people here don't know jack about computers or don't build their own.

Ah but they also opened new locations in SV, for example when the el Camino store closed they opened up another one near by the name of the street escapes me at the moment actually it wasnt a real closing it was more of a move to a different location but they did have a closing sale, I know this as I have friends who worked at that location and then simply transfered over to the new location. I currently live up north but have a second home in Santa Clara, around el camino and san thomas.

Heres what I see on the store locator

# San Mateo
# Pleasanton
# San Bruno
# San Jose
# Emeryville

I've been to the one on El Camino and I know that ones closed, but I don't see another one in SC. They had originally opened a Good Guys/CompUSA in EPA (next to IKEA), but I think that one closed as well.

But ehh no matter no biggie the only thing I liked about CompUSA over say Best Buy is they carried more modding tools and other such materials which was nice for crap I need it now situations. But then again theres always Frys, as long as you know what your getting your fine lol

Oh yeah Frys, lol, the sales guy didn't even know what Arctic Silver was. I ended up trolling down 3 aisles before I found it. Still, you can't beat their deals, its just dirt cheap.

lol...well what kind of store is Fry? Is it something like best buy/circuit city equivalent?

I'm asking because we don't got any Fry's here. Seen one in Vegas though.

It has everything you can think of, if it deals with electronics or making electronics they will have it.

Think of Tiger Direct and New Egg put together but inside a giant warehouse that you can walk through and check things out

but you have to be careful as they tend to re-package items as new and so on but at a discounted price so only those who know what they are looking for and know if the item is in good shape should shop there, those who have no clue wont find any help as the people who work there are morons and dont know anything.
Other than that it can be a fun and great experience, thats where I got my 500gb Seagate for $150.00 ^_^

Hmm...

Isn't that the case for a lot of hardware stores? It's to the point that some customers know more then the sale's Representative. :P

Circuit City is basically overprice. The on-line/mail in rebates are a pain and EVEN with those, it's still more expensive. CompUSA once in a great while has great instant rebate things and Bestbuy seems to have one of the best instant rebate Western Digital drives from time to time. (I got my 250GB WD SATAII 7.2K drive for $79 bucks XD )

tkelito

Speaking of drives from Best Buy they had 500 GB Western Digital 7200's SATAII (3.0) for $149.99 in early December.

Just gotta watch those flyers, they have some really good deals if you ad shop every Sunday.

-Pat-

Mail-in Rebates are ALMOST a thing of the past. Even for Circuit City they are slowly disappearing because they know with them they cannot compete.
