As I work for a large fiber based carrier, we resell high bandwidth circuits and my bud down in NOC got this call the other day. I had to paraphrase, but you get the idea. It is obviously a prank call, but still funny.

Op: Hello, thank you for calling ******** ********, how can I help you?
Cust: Yeah, I am looking into getting some internet services from you guys.

Op: Great, what kind of broadband connection can I intrest you in?
Cust: I was thinking of an OC-768... but then again, should I just wait until an OC-3072 becomes available?

Op: If you don't mind me asking, what do you need that kind of bandwidth for?
Cust: I do a lot of surfing.

Op: Do you realize how much bandwidth an OC-3072 really is?
Cust: Yeah, I need the fastest possible connection possible.

Op: Why is that?
Cust: Well to be honest with you, I figured if I had an OC-3072, I could download the entire internet over night and then cancel my service the next week. Are there any cancelation fees associated with this type of connection?

Matty, lets just say that OC-768 is 39813.12 Mbit/s (4.86GB/s).
I am sure you can imagine how fast OC-3072 would be :P

I believe 3072 is ~20GB/s.. Hmm, seems slow.

...transmission speeds of around 159.25248 Gbit/s (20 Gbyte/s). Though it is unknown if such a standard will be implemented in the near future, research based chips from IBM and Intel indicate progress towards the standard.

Remember that the 20 is referring to Bytes not Bits like most connections

You at least think he could have came up with a better lie, don't you?

Most people that call these kinds of pranks in are usually drunk or high and usually do not put much thought into these calls. Honestly, no serious inquiry for that kind of connection would be calling the Customer Service number. They will be setting up meetings and such sales associates etc...

Good God... unfortunately, even with all that speed, you'd spend most of your "on time" just waiting for connections to be made.

Unfortunately, this "internet" thing we've made is not a fast creature. My blazing 15Mbit connection sits idle most of the time while the other end figures out what I just requested! :spin

15mb/s wow thats a bit faster than my 2mb/s and 256kb/s upload which i hate but its all i can get

downloading the internet overnight is impossible, even if you have a 100GB/s connection. With the amount of songs/movies/pictures out there, there no telling how big the internet is, I dont think that 50TB hard drives is enough for the internet.

With internet speeds like that, using your own hard drive would be the slowest part.

To be fair, you'd need about 500 sata hard drives in raid 0, just to get those speeds.

lol, funny phone call though, but one of these connections would be a dream to have for personal use.

Oh I know exactly what you mean :banghead For some reason, every time I connected to a server on starcraft, it was ran by someone on a 56k, and this was when I had DSL. Now I have a 15/2 line :Thumb *high five*

If you want a good workout for your internet line, download lots of linux OSs via torrents :) They download blazing fast at a 1.5MB+/s!
